kidcoaster Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 The ACE Executive Committee has designated three roller coasters as ACE Roller Coaster Landmarks. The Giant Dipper at Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk in California is an Arthur Looff - Fred Church collaboration that stands as a rare seaside wooden coaster icon. The Giant Dipper's Landmark designation will be officially made at ACE's 2007 Spring Conference in May, to be held during the 100th Anniversary celebration of Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. Kings Island's Racer in Ohio, designed and constructed by John Allen of the Philadelphia Toboggan Company, was the first wooden roller coaster to be built in a modern theme park. The permanent marker for Racer's Landmark designation will be unveiled at Coaster Con XXX, to be co-hosted by Kings island this June. The endangered Blue Streak at Conneaut Lake Park in Pennsylvania, 70 years old in 2007, is an ACE Coaster Classic that follows the quintessential out-and-back layout as interpreted by legendary designer Ed Vettel. The date and setting for the presentation of this honor for Blue Streak, which falls during Conneaut Lake Park's 115th Anniversary season, is yet to be determined.
Airtime&Gravity Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 I thought that the Racer and Giant Dipper were already landmarks, but at least they get landmark status even if it means nothing. I still don't get the award for blue streak since many coasters fit that, but ACE does a lot of weird stuff.
Carnage Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 I thought Blue Streak was already an ACE coaster landmark??
robbalvey Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 And let's see a show of hands of everyone who cares? Nope? No one? Didn't think so! --Robb
BarryH Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 I still can't figure out why SFMM's Revolution is an ACE Coaster Landmark. My head banged on the OTSRs that my ears were sore!
kenshinmac Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 Maybe we should have an unofficial TPR Broken Ass (get it donkey... ) award for truly awful rollercoasters? It would be kinda fun... Of course I doubt many parks would happily post plaques noting the occasion.
Ryan King Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 I still can't figure out why SFMM's Revolution is an ACE Coaster Landmark. My head banged on the OTSRs that my ears were sore! That was actually GONE when I was last there!
metrock Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 And let's see a show of hands of everyone who cares? Nope? No one? Didn't think so! --Robb Yeah exactly what I was thinking! So....Robb....[in an innocent tone] when are we going to see the 1st "Theme Park Review Coaster Landmark"?
robbalvey Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 And let's see a show of hands of everyone who cares? Nope? No one? Didn't think so! --Robb Yeah exactly what I was thinking! So....Robb....[in an innocent tone] when are we going to see the 1st "Theme Park Review Coaster Landmark"? When we go to FantazyLand!

robbalvey Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 ^ No, this FantazyLand: http://www.themeparkreview.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=24518 --Robb
Ryan King Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 Neverland Ranch = Fantazyland? I can see the relations! -Ryan
metrock Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 Well, Michael WAS living in the middle east for some time..... FantazyLand could have very weel been his home away from home. .....No comment

And the award for greatest rollercoaster ever goes to...the revamped Son of Beast! What could beat an extremely rough and now nearly pointless ride, formatted with equally rough trains? On a lighter note, its about time Racer got it's recognition. It was one of the key elements that brought in the second coming of amusement parks after all...
kidcoaster Posted March 11, 2007 Author Posted March 11, 2007 I can see why the Bluestreak got this award. It is the same as when it opened in 1938. Same cars same operations. I don't think many classic coasters are still like that.
