Carnage Posted October 11, 2006 Posted October 11, 2006 So originally I thought that my first ride on The Voyage would have to wait for 2007. Luckilly it turned out that my parents had to go down to Indiana for a wedding the weekend of Candian thanksgiving. This also happened to be Holiday World's closing weekend. It's fitting that Holiday Worlds closing weekend was on thanksgiving. Almost destiny even. The downside was that it meant two VERY long 12 hour drives with my parents(one of them overnight). But that was a small price to pay to finally get to ride Voyage. My parents and I left friday after work, getting into Indianapolis at about 4:30 am. My parents had to go to the wedding saturday morning, while I slept all afternoon. Sunday my cousin and I made the 3 hour trek down to Holiday World. I had already been to HW last year, so really I had little interest in most of the park. I was really only here for Voyage and to a lesser extent Raven and Legend. (though we did take a courtesy ride on the log flume and Gobbler Getaway). It turned out to be a very nice day, sunny and 75 degrees. After getting our tickets the ticket lady tells us "don't forget about the new ride Voyage". Yeah, like I was going to forget. Where did she think I was going first?? All told we got 8x rides on Voyage, and 2x each on Raven and Legend. Raven and Legend are fun rides, but I've never gotten a ride that I'd consider ranking them #1 coasters. Very fun, but nothing too special IMHO. Voyage on the other hand blew me away. All the good reviews I've heard were right on the money. I'm a big fan of speed and laterals, so this ride was near perfect to me. It left me pretty much out of breath by the time we hit the brakes. On my top ten Voyage just edges out Thunderhead for the #1 spot. It was the backseat rides tossing me around like a rag doll that sealed the deal. Though Voyage ended up being a bit more nerve wracking for me in a way I did not expect. And that was due to the wasp nest that had taken over the top of the lift hill. I'm borderline allergic, so this kind of worried me. (one sting is not serious though I blow up like a baloon, but I'm bad enough that 3+ stings would be considered possibly fatal). In the front it wasn't too bad. The wasps would be sitting on the railings, and as the train rumbled by they would get disturbed and start buzzing the hill. But in the back of the train the top of the lifthill ended up covered in pissed off wasps. Luckilly for me though they didn't seem to be sting happy at all, and for the most part left us alone. Though the wasp problem did result in a double ride for us. Later in the afternoon the wasp problem got REALLY bad. Probably at least a hundred+ wasps were swarming the lift hill. Because of this HW closed the ride so that the maintenance guys could go up and spray the hill. We had gotten in line just before they closed it. When our train came back in there was only a couple people left for the front. So the ride ops let us remain on the train for one more ride. I breifly weighed my options. I could get off and stay out of harms way. Or I could go for another ride, risking running the chance of being stung. I quickly made the right choice and went for another ride. Didn't get too much pics, but here's what I did get. Any ride which nearly tears the shirt off your back is good in my books. On Ride photos must add 30 pounds though. I could have ridden this all day. Maybe not as good tunnels as Hades, but they still add alot to the ride. Ninety degrees!!! That train is covered in wasps at that point. I loved how agressive and out of control Voyage was. Gobbler Getaway was fun, but I still suck at shooting dark rides. I'd say Legend is better then Raven, but still no Voyage. I have yet to have a #1 ride on Raven. But it's still a really good ride. Voyage was everything I had hoped it would be and more. Canadians everywhere were eating turkey. But I had the better idea. Peeking through the trees is the main reason I'm here. Holiday World, the perfect way to end a season.
Cameron Posted October 11, 2006 Posted October 11, 2006 Oh man .. I was at Holiday World on Saturday .. missed you by a day! Curiously I noticed no wasps at the top of the lift (we rode countless times), although we typically rode towards the front. I took a bunch of photos, but they're mainly of me, my friends and his kids. I don't think it's PTR-worthy. It was a great visit though, spectacular weather! Cameron.
CoasterFanatic Posted October 11, 2006 Posted October 11, 2006 Nice TR. Glad to see that you enjoyed Voyage. but I still suck at shooting dark rides Confirmed.
Three Posted October 11, 2006 Posted October 11, 2006 Ah, so Voyage has a wasp problem too? Man, that really sucks. I've seen SheiKra do the same thing, and heard the same about other rides. There, they were muddaubbers though. Scary looking, but harmless.
pkdcoaster Posted October 11, 2006 Posted October 11, 2006 Good pics. Good that you got to go too, nice little end of season surprise. JEFF
65skylark Posted October 11, 2006 Posted October 11, 2006 On Ride photos must add 30 pounds though. Sure they do Nice TR. Hopefully I get out there sometime next year. For now I'll just have to be satisfied with Thunderhead as my number 1 woodie.
Carnage Posted October 11, 2006 Author Posted October 11, 2006 Oh man .. I was at Holiday World on Saturday .. missed you by a day! That's too bad. Would have been cool to hang out again.
SharkTums Posted October 11, 2006 Posted October 11, 2006 Be honest, you were trying to flash the onride camera!
Carnage Posted October 11, 2006 Author Posted October 11, 2006 ^ lol maybe, maybe. Or maybe I was actually stung and I was starting to swell up.
shesaidboom Posted October 11, 2006 Posted October 11, 2006 The Voyage made my shirt come off too, but I didn't check to see if it was caught on camera I will just say it wasn't. I also suck at shooting dark rides, probably worse than you do. Everyone in my turkey car thing? had scores in the 1000s or at least high hundreds and mine was like 20. Maybe I shouldn't be admitting this. Nice TR. Glad you didn't have to wait until 2007 to ride the Voyage
Carnage Posted October 11, 2006 Author Posted October 11, 2006 I think I ended up with like 490. Which is much better than I did in the UK where I think only 1 of the 4 or 5 guns actually worked for me. Now this means that I have a strong draw to bring me back for Holliwood nights next year. But I'll have to see about that.
socalMAN123 Posted October 11, 2006 Posted October 11, 2006 I still suck at shooting dark rides I thought on that ride you used "turkey callers"? Nice photos, I can't wait to finally get to Holiday World. ---Brent
Shockwave Posted October 11, 2006 Posted October 11, 2006 The Voyage made my shirt come off too, but I didn't check to see if it was caught on camera I will just say it wasn't. What's with the Voyage trying to rip shirts off the Canadians who ride it?
Carnage Posted October 11, 2006 Author Posted October 11, 2006 ^ I guess Voyage has a thing for Canadians kind of like Elissa.
dandaman Posted October 11, 2006 Posted October 11, 2006 ^...That right? Canadians everywhere were eating turkey Correction: Everyone except me, who had iced Italian flatbread. (See: frozen pizza.) Glad to see some Canadian representin'. (Shameless plug: CP on Saturday... 50 degree weather. That should be fun.)
Carnage Posted October 11, 2006 Author Posted October 11, 2006 ^ You're better off with it being cold. Warm weather + CP halloweekend can result in the park being filled to capacity.
dandaman Posted October 12, 2006 Posted October 12, 2006 ^That's what I figured, but wasn't sure. Anyway, we got some pretty good snow showers at 12:30 this afternoon. No accumulation, though it was bordering on whiteout conditions. My walk home from school against the wind about 15 minutes ago has pretty much convinced me to wear a toque and gloves. coasterdude5 Posted October 12, 2006 Posted October 12, 2006 Great pictures, can't wait to get out to HW some day.
