BDG Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 Six Flags America in Largo will not be serving up the six-legged delicacy because of concerns it would detract from its family-focused attendance goals. "I can't see a lot of moms and dads loving the cockroaches.", said Karin Korpowski, a Six Flags America spokeswoman. Washington Post
SharkTums Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 See this is one of my problems with Six Flags right now... What happened to all of those press releases and articles where Shapiro said the parks were going to go 'Family Friendly'? Then throughout the season family rides were closed early, had limited schedules, and we never heard of 'Family Fright Fest' again did we? Instead we have all of these Xtreme Events like eating cockroaches and riding coasters for 13 hours. Six Flags had an identity crisis and Shapiro saw that...but it seems they haven't done much to fix it this season. My hope is that they use this offseason to unload some parks, and focus on key markets.
FlyingScooter Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 Maybe Shapiro's idea is to have the remaining parks overrun by large Families of Extreme Cockroaches. There were plenty of them in the johns at SFWOA, some the size of Hot Wheels cars.
Hercules Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 It also baffles me that Shapiro isn't doing more to cater to the families like I said that he would. However, I said a while ago, he was going to realize that you can't change a niche and an image right away and that he was going to have to work with what he had. Maybe it is a process of change or he has completely given up on it. I have a feeling that in a couple of years there is going to be a blitz of thrill rides popping up again at these parks, Tom Cruise running around in a thong and Daniel Snyder with a pink mohawk serving 25 cent cotton candy, gang fights in the Superman Ultimate Flight lines between large black men and Larry, Bugs Bunny playing with children and then fondling their moms, and beer - lots and lots of beer. Certainly fun for the whole family!!!

Things started off geared toward exactly how he wanted it. There were parades and more costumed characters. But reality hit. The company's still in debt, and it simply doesn't have the budget to do everything he said during his first tenure. I think we may see all this stuff get fixed as the years go on. He hasn't given up. He's just facing reality.
benzo41190 Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 So was the cancellation of the cockroach thing going to be at all Six Flags parks? Also, is that 13 hour coaster riding marathon thing going to be at all Six Flags also?
Meteornotes Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 Like most modern businessmen, Shapiro thought he could make a few changes and rake in the cash. But when it didn't happen fifteen minutes after the plan was implemented, it was scrapped. What SF wanted to accomplish was going to take YEARS, not a season, and management didn't wait that long before pulling the plug. And that's if they could do it at all, since they have some massive customer service issues to overcome. They can have parades and costumed characters everywhere, but until families feel like SF is a great value for their money, and it is a safe place for them to visit, they're not going to go. Do a survey of familes in this area about SFA, and see what they have to say about safety and operations at that park. And that's just one property in the chain. My guess is the SF fire sale on properties is coming in the off season. Though I will admit I really thought they'd put some effort into SFA, since with the close proximity to the Redskins, there would be a lot of cross-marketing opportunities... dt
