Kennywood (KW) Discussion Thread

My favorite Log Flume ever. How much longer will these things still be around? Can't see Morey's getting rid of theirs but you never know... and BGW just rehabbed theirs. -

Under that logic, log flumes and rapids rides would be considered coasters as well. Good point. -

Does anyone know why The Bat's queue starts at the bathroom by Banshee? I understand it was built 25 years ago and the queue used to go under the station, but I've always wondered why that long walk for the Queue to begin. Did it originally start down where Top Guns/The Bat's sign currently is, where you can jump in for a re-ride? -

The chicken place that replaced Chic-Fil-A at Cedar Point is fantastic. Go there every visit. -
50 million records sold... Half a dozen or so Top 10 Billboard Hits... I don't think the joke is on them. Granted I don't own any of their albums or will see this show but they are easily one of the biggest bands of the past 20 years. I'm interested in the Cheap Trick show. Might be my first trip to Darien Lake.

NO!! That would hurt Darien Lake more than it would help it. Build housing near the park and the next thing you know those residents will start complaining about the noise and traffic even though the park was there first. As Aurora and Bainbridge Township began growing closer to and around Geauga Lake that is what happened. Plus it won't guarantee an increase in attendance and it could increase the value of the property enough that selling it would be worth more than operating a park on it. Canada's Wonderland may be in a similar situation but that park is a big money maker for CF. One of the things that I like most about DL is that it has that secluded feel to it - no housing or shopping centers next to or across from the park itself. Your post made me miss GL/WWK that much more.

He did say we should expect a new coaster after the water park expansion. They should expect the GL/WWK crowd to start to find their way to Waldameer. I would buy a season pass at $90 a person, I can't justify it but many probably could. -
Who killed Geauga Lake?

Thanks Geauga Dog. WWK routinely had attendance numbers in excess of 150,000 a year and actually climbed over 200,000 in 2014 for some odd reason. Not sure what they did in 2016, but WWK wasn't a ghost town. I used to have a season pass to Sandcastle in Pittsburgh from 2012 - 2015, that park was empty M - F, same as WWK. I'm hoping the people that took over the Beach, can take over WWK before it's demolished. -

I disagree. In 2003, SFWOA had 2.1 million in attendance. In 2004, Geauga Lake had about 600,000 in attendance after the Wild Side closed. Geauga Lake actually peaked in attendance somewhere between 750-800,000 in 2007 after XFlight and the launch coaster were removoed. -

Finally! I live 30 minutes from Kennywood, but would much rather visit Kings Island, Cedar Point or Waldameer. It's about time Kennywood did a major investment. -

I actually read in 2014 that they had record attendance numbers for the slide side from an employee. Some of them sneak onto the Geauga Lake facebook page occasionally and post in the comments. I went to the park 6/7 times in the past 2 years, it had great attendance from what I could tell. Things were looking on the up from what I could tell. The only attendance numbers I can find that are set in stone, are that the park did almost 200,000 visitors in 2008, the year after the ride side closed. Are those bad for a 12 acre water park? -

Ravine Flyer 2 is really smooth and one of my top 3 wooden coasters of all time. -

What will always confuse me about shutting it down this year, was the fact they added all new lounge chairs all over the park. Green ones, the same ones the other Cedar Fair parks got at their water park. Not saying that's a big investment, but now these have been lugged to another Cedar Fair park. If you were closing the park down, why even bother? Also, behind the Thunder Falls tower complex, they pushed back the wall a couple hundred feet. Poured new concrete on the walkway and re-landscaped areas that weren't touched in over a decade. That will always strike me as strange. I visited the park 6 times this year and was happy with each visit. F -

The CF plans had the hyper on the south side running from approximately Happy Harbor (where thunder falls is now) to approximately the water fortress and back. When the park closed in 2007 a lot of people got a lot of cool things from the offices, many of these friends still work for the industry and CF and that's why they haven't made their way online yet. Thanks so much for the info. I know a lot of rumors flew about a hyper from SF going in around 2002/03. It seems this wouldn't be the same coastersince it would cut into the Wild Life side, that I'm sure they would want to preserve. Do you know if there was one really planned from the Six Flags era? -

I worked at this park during the SFO-GL years. And I remember back in 2001 this is EXACTLY what the GM told us during a pre-season employee orientation. I remember sitting there, at 17 and thinking "that's not how it works, that's not how any of this works!" (Forgive me for not using the meme) I couldn't understand how they assumed a semi-destination area containing two parks would pull the same attendance as "3 parks in 1." You just took someones 2-3 day vacation and turned it into a 1 day stop. Especially when most of the animals people would visit for left. A few observations of someone who spent everyday of his summer there from 2000-2005. Six Flags biggest mistake was adding so much too quickly. 5 coasters in 2 years was too much. Space those out and you have 10-12 years of good cap ex to keep people coming back. Then buying Sea World was the second nail in the coffin. These parks complimented each other, driving business. Combining them was a big mistake. CF buying the park was the 3rd nail, I wont go as far to say they bought it to close it, cause that's stupid. But they didn't do anything to improve the park on the dry side. Most SF themeing was lazily removed and not much effort was made to cover it up or replace it. Heck, in 2005 you could still read "Bruce Wayne Foundation" On Dominator's station. It never felt that CF really tried. However, being there in 2004 I knew for 2005 a hyper was on the table (blue prints were in the maintenance shop and I know a former co-worker who still has them!) and management chose to go waterpark with the budget given them. Not sure why they decided they needed a new waterpark less then 5 years after opening a new/updated waterpark but they did (SFO expansion had the Hurricane Harbor update, new wave pool, slides, etc.). This park did not need a NEW waterpark. I feel like if they sold off the sea world property, kept the dry side, and expanded/renovated the existing waterpark this park would still be around today. Replacing some of the older slides from the 70's/80's and Hook's Lagoon with new slides and a new water fortress would have been just as successful as the entire WWK expansion. A lot of bad decisions were made from 1999-2007 and most of it was ego driven and not, in my opinion, thought out from a business perspective. But of course, hindsight is 20/20. Where was that hyper supposed to go? Getting a scan of that blueprint would be amazing.
