Holiday World (HW) Discussion Thread

www.screamscape.com/html/holiday_world.htm Not sure how high of a regard Screamscape is held to when it comes to rumors, but they claim a few months ago someone from guest relations said that something of note will be happening to the Legend. The Holiblog all but confirms that all 3 woodies will recieve some form of improvement this year. It appears that while we're seeing a lot of innovations from RMC, we're simultaneously witnessing increased knowledge and/or effort to improve traditional track maintenance. Being that this is Holiday World and their track record (no pun intended), this is very exciting to woodie fans like myself. -

The zero-car on the new PTC trains look like something out of the Saw franchise. -
Surprisingly Millennium Flyers are heavier on a per-axle basis than PTC's. There was a video somewhere in which Chris Gray from GCI discussed the challenges of adding MF's to Wildcat, with the biggest one being finding places to shave weight off of each car so the weight of the entire train would not exceed that of the PTC it was replacing.
-
If it is back to its earlier years...it's a top 10 wooden coaster for sure. Then the only thing remaining will be to see how long it stays that way this time. I have a hard time believing that the GCI approach will last as long as, say, topper track would have, and I'm curious as to whether they'll either a) prove me wrong or b) be kicking themselves for picking a temporary fix. Obviously, I'm hoping for the former! I think if they stay with PTC's you're correct on being skeptical. On the other hand if the switch to MF's it should be tremendously beneficial. My only concern would be that you can use Gwazi and Wildcat as examples of how simply replacing the train doesn't help, however neither coaster received the extensive retrack exhibited in this project. But we could also look at what happened to Hades, where there was a lot of new track added and the ride is rougher than ever, but then again that wasn't a GCI project. It seems that almost none of GCI's coasters that started with MF's have had deterioration that even comes close to what happened with most CCI, Dinn, and RCCA coasters. Considering many of those projects are over 10 years old it gives us a good idea as to how good GCI is with track quality. Knowing this I think there's a good chance this could be a home run.
-
Link on Screamscape This still appears to be a total retrack with few to no profile changes . I think it may be possible that the track's centerline may be being altered for the purpose of maintenance and rider comfort, however there's a lot we have yet to see. Regardless of the finished product Ghostrider has a great layout and it's great that KBF is doing their best to bring it back to its old self.

Awesome! Yet another complete, airtime - filled, and element-intensive experience from RMC. What's there not to love? Congrats to KK and it's patrons! -

Nice TR! I was there yesterday as well, and it was the first time in years for me. I also can't decide whether I like Bizzaro or WC more, but I can't think of too many parks that have a 1-2 punch like they have when it comes to how many instances of ejector airtime can be found. I wasn't sure what to expect on WC as it was my first RMC but ended up very happy that it's airtime is just as forceful as any Intamin save Skyrush. Glad you had a good time. -
Just got back from SFNE for the first time in 8 years. Minor observations: Bizzaro was just as great as it was when I rode it as SROS, even though soundtrack wasn't playing. Goliath wasn't enjoyable at all, far too rough....not because of the track design but because the trains rode like it was a wooden coaster. Wicked Cyclone was just a huge slathering of awesome sauce. The airtime is ridiculous, and the frequency of the direction changes had me laughing hysterically. I'm not sure if I like it more than Bizzaro, but it doesn't matter. That 1-2 punch makes life worth living.

Custom Coasters International in retrospect
PaTim replied to sirspud's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
With hindsight being 20/20 and supply/demand as the grand scheme of things, CCI's demise came as a result of underbidding along with using traditional style trains that couldn't articulate very well. Because their product came around such a comparatively low price, they were able to successfully flood the USA market, which has since dried up in terms of traditional woodies. GCI's more cautious approach along with their willingness to design their own trains allowed them to get more work in the end, because they guranteed less maintenance costs along with liability. You don't see many GCI's having problems with deterioration outside of the ones that opened with PTCs. The good thing is CCI still continues through TGG(same engineers), only with even crazier designs, albeit it appears they are more focused on heartlining their curves. The only problem for them is that the USA market hasn't really opened up for them. Hopefully we'll see more of their larger designs in the future, as I'm sure they're still some American parks willing to take a look at what they have to offer, because they still seem less expensive than GCI and may even offer a superior train to prevent excessive maintenance. RMC is going to be tough for them to complete with though, because their products are relatively inexpensive as well. -
I've ridden most of the huge woodies that are/were well known for being rough, such as SOB, Mean Streak , and the Voyage, and I can attest that nothing seemed rougher than the lake turn on Hercules. That has to be a serious contender for the title of roughest part of any coaster in history

Holiday World (HW) Discussion Thread
PaTim replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Because I'm positive a majority of coaster enthusiasts care more about Voyage than Thunderbird on any given day. I am anxious to hear more reviews from those who rode Thunderbird, though. Exactly. If SFGadv opened a new giga coaster while at the same time placed a trim brake on El Toro, the El Toro situation is going to garner some talk. Some parks have that "star" coaster that appeals to coaster enthusiasts, and Holiday World is one of them. If the Voyage was taken out of the equation Holiday World almost certainly wouldn't be talked about as much as it is. -

Well also, there's only sooooooooo many ways we can say "THAT LOOKS AWESOME I WANNA RIDE IT" though I do I feel 0% bad about it I've said my 2 cents and then some, more like a quarter, about how awesome it looks and that it's enough to drag me 13 hours out there, so cmon let me vent : P I thought this was the Holiday World Discussion thread. Anyway, yes, Thunderbird looks like a great fit for the park and is going to bring in a lot of guests. It's nice to see B&M do an LSM launch, and the ride itself looks very complete. -

When you say trims, do you mean just the MCBR? Well, this really is a bummer, sounds like there's no chance of an unrestrained ride outside of luck of the draw or apparently asking to turn the trims down lol and it's either OMG AMAZING or "a bit disappointing" depending on what you get. As your first time riding, is it still good at least even with them on "full"? Because everyone is saying you could barely make it through one ride previously, but it it's a letdown now...I'm not sure I'd want to ride more than once...it'd lose the point (in my book) of taming the ride if I wouldn't want to re ride anyway, Or is it still good enough even on full? It's quite an overwhelming ride for most people. I rode it in 2006 and 2007 and I found it to be extremely aggressive with intensity, forcefulness, lightning-quick directional changes, and physicality. There are several other coasters like that, but the only difference is that the Voyage is very long. I heard someone describe it as "too much coaster for me" for which I found to be a good analogy. Personally, I absolutely love the ride, it's like it was designed with the attitude of if it's too intense, well too bad. With all that being said, I think the stop on the MCBR might be beneficial to the average rider, as it will give them a breather. When I first rode it, while I was waiting, I watched back to back arriving trains have a rider run to the trash can on the exit ramp. It's on the same intensity plane as coasters like I-305 and Sky rush, albeit for some different reasons. Oh I totally get it, just I'm being selfish since I am not an average rider, and I was indeed looking forward to that "if it's too intense too bad" type thing. I mean, sucks for those people who had to run to the trash can every time and what not but well...that's not me lol so I'm pretty sad. What is was like means nothing now, just curious what is the experience like now when they are on full. And mainly just venting is all. Yet again I finally plan to visit a park (It's 13 hours from me, in not exactly a "hot spot" and during college and early years of work major travel isn't very easy, this is the first time I even can make it out here) and I may realistically end up with a disappointing ride. Or not, it may still be great even with it, that's all I'm fishing for. If it makes you feel better it never really flew through the MCBR, so I doubt it negatively affects the ride too much. Your "selfishness" is warranted though, as I would prefer the most untamed version of the ride myself. -

Cedar Point (CP) Discussion Thread
PaTim replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
That remake idea is amazing, fantastic job! Personally I would love to see that exact layout and profile be undertaken, with topper track and steel wheels being used like Outlaw Run. That way it would: -Still be officially wooden -Can be marketed as a special type of wooden coaster -Maintain its speed better which is important because of the length of the ride You may have created the best ride at Cedar Point! -
I rode Wildcat this year and it was far smoother than in 2012. It's weird too because I'm one of those nerds who gets mesmerized at thoroughly looking at the ride structure and there was very little new wood to be seen, it appears that it has the same track that it had when it ran the PTC's. Lightning Racer is the same way, it appears to have the same track structure from when it was built, yet it has never gotten rough. It seems that wooden coasters perform optimally when their design incorporates undulating curves and changes in direction as opposed to long, sustained curves; along with single-axle trains at the ride's opening, seasonal operation, and a relatively humid climate.

Top Roller Coaster Myths & Rumors!

Mean Streak will eventually be reprofiled or replaced -
Hello everyone, What are some coasters that you feel are criticized by either the enthusiast community or GP for being too intense. I know a lot of these coasters are criticized because of some form of roughness, but honestly it can be any reason. Some that come to mind for me are: Skyrush - violent airtime Imtimidator 305 - excessive positive g-forces The Voyage - very aggressive for a long period of time Any thoughts, addendums, or additions?

The Phoenix is smooth, filled with airtime, a classic, and has consistently been ranked extremely high by coaster enthusiasts since it was relocated to Knoebels in 1985. Twister is a replica of a classic, goes from smooth to rough depending where you sit and where it is in its maintenance cycle, and almost lacks airtime completely. A lot of non-enthusiasts actually prefer Twister, but that's only because it's a more intense ride than Phoenix and has some very good laterals making it seem more "action-packed". On the other hand, based on rankings, regards, and intangibles the Phoenix is a superior ride. Whatever you like better is most important in questions like this, because deciding how good a coaster is revolves around your objective opinion.

What GCI coaster has the most airtime?
PaTim replied to Montuman99's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I've only ridden LR, Wildcat, and Roar East....and out of those I've experienced a negligible amount of airtime on the two Hersheypark rides, and none at all on Roar. How do the newer GCI's like Gold Striker compare to the older ones in regards to airtime? Do they have significantly more, or is it just enough to make them slightly stand out? The reason I ask is because the lack of airtime is what frustrates me about GCI in general. They have AMAZING layouts, are aesthetically beautiful, and provide consistent speed; but, it seems as if they were to incorporate the type of airtime that Intamin, RMC, and TGG does into their designs they would be among the best coasters, of any type, in the world. -
Most Overrated coaster?
PaTim replied to BlackWidow's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
This one might surprise people, but my vote goes to the Phoenix at Knoebels. In saying this, I'm not discrediting it from being a quality ride, because it is, but I don't find it nearly as thrilling as some of the more recent woodies that it consistently gets ranked ahead of. I don't find it to be in the same class as rides like the Voyage, El Toro, a lot of the GCI, CCI, and TGG creations, etc. I still think it's the best coaster built before the 70's, just not a top 10 experience for me anyways. I.May have this opinion because I've ridden it so many times.
