Gröna Lund Discussion Thread
alejon replied to Tobias94's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I managed to stumble upon this article by SVT (Swedish public broadcasting company) It's in Swedish, but what it says is basically that Gröna Lund has applied with a new plan to develop the parking lot and that it will be discussed in the city planning board of Stockholm now. The plan is to have 2-3 stories tall buildings in classical style around the perimeter with a parking garage underground. Inside of the buildings there will be rides etc. The process of planning everything, including letting everyone have an opinion on the plans is supposed to take about two years. Gröna Lund hopes that the new area will open at around 2020-2021. -

Not that it should matter that much, but isn't the actual tower of Fritt Fall really old? As far as I remember it's a converted observation tower that opened in 1966. And a bit unrelated, Parks & Resorts stated that Furuvik will be getting a new ride for 2017 as early as April. They will reveal what it is during this summer. -

Probably got to do with the name. Ikaros is the Swedish name for Icarus, son of the master craftsman Daedalus. Together they were to flee from king Minos on the island of Crete by using wings of feathers and wax. Despite his fathers warnings, Icarus flew too close to the sun so his wings melted and he crashed. The top ornament on Ikaros will be a sun to symbolise this. -

Experience the worst fall in history! In 2017 Ikaros is coming to Gröna Lund! Imagine sitting in a chair, dangling with your feet high above the city of Stockholm, secured by a shoulder restraint. As you're approching the top of the tower, your chair is suddenly tilting you 90 degrees, and you find yourself lying horisontally facing the ground. Then comes the drop... When Gröna Lund opens in april 2017, the visitors will be divided into those who dare and whose who don't...do you dare to try the worst fall in history? Some facts: 2 gondolas with 8 seats each Tower height: 95m Top Speed: 90km/h G-forces: 3,5 Type: Intamin Sky Jump Will be built on a bridge between Lustiga Huset and Jetline -

Gröna Lund posted this on Facebook with the caption: "So this is where our new 95m tall ride will be placed. Impossible does not live here, as we say. P.S We don't joke about things as important as this" It really is a narrow passage, even if it is on an elevated platform.. -

Yesterday (yes, April 1st) Gröna Lund posted about a new ride on their Facebook page. Of course almost no one (me included) believed it, but it seems like they are telling the truth.. So what are they telling us? They will present the ride on June 7th, it will be 95m tall (310 feet) and will be located between Lustiga Huset and Jetline, a very small space. Edit: The space where it will be located is only 5m (16 feet) wide. Very interested in this one.. -

Liseberg will spend 170 million sek (20 million usd) on a new area called Lisebergs Trädgårdar, Liseberg Gardens. The area is situated between Atmosfear and Flumeride (on the mountain I presume), and will include Victorian gardens, new walking areas, and garden café. The total area is 6310 sq m (68 000 sq ft) and of that 1900 sq m (20 500 sq ft) is different garden arrangements. Inside Lisebergs Trädgårdar a new play area for children, Barnens Paradis (Children's Paradise), will be built. This is actually the third time a play area with this name has existed at Liseberg. And inside Barnens Paradis a two-storey merry go round is found, Blomsterkarusellen. Both will be completely free to ride/use. I have only found relatively small pictures at the Liseberg webpage, but here they are anyway! Barnens Paradis Blomsterkarusellen Liseberg will reveal a third attraction on Friday at 08 am, swedish time. A picture with clouds and the words "Drömmen om att flyga" (The dream about flying) can be seen. So the rumoured Gerstlauer Sky Roller seems like a good guess -

Next year Liseberg will add a new season, "Halloween på Liseberg" (Halloween at Liseberg). In a press release the park says it will be open between October 24th and November 1st. It will feature both really scary parts in the Gasten area and more family-oriented parts in Kaninlandet. Press release (In Swedish) -

Gröna Lund keeps posting a picture per day, and today this was posted. A popular guess is a remake of the haunted house (Spökhuset), which seems like a possibility to me. -

A few years ago Grona Lund was trying to purchase an adjacent piece of property for additional coasters, the park owners shared this with TPR during the first Scandi trip. However, I beleive the acquisition or plans were blocked by the locals. Actually, Gröna Lund owns that property, however due to the legislation here in Sweden they were not granted a building permit for rides on it. I think the latest rumour is that they will build something that may be used all year around on that property. Sidestory: Until 1957 there was a competing park on that property called "Nöjesfältet" (The Amusement Park). Both parks were family run and the competition was really fierce, at one point the owners of Nöjesfältet decided to put a dead horse in front of Gröna lund's entrance! During WW2 the son of the owners of Nöjsesfältet and Gröna Lunds owners daughter fell in love and in the end they got married and both started to work at Gröna Lund. I found a picture showing Nöjesfältet in 1936 on Wikipedia. As can be seen, they even had a coaster! Back to the upcomming 2015 addition, Gröna Lund has posted two new pictures that makes absolutely no sense to me, but maybe to you? The text seems to be some sort of coding and a "scene 5", whatever that is. Maybe some future clues will be able to provide some actual....clues. -

Gröna Lund is hinting at a new ridefor next year, so far these two pictures have been posted on the parks facebook-site. Peter is the name of the ride manager at Gröna Lund. And yesterday this picture was posted. Apparently the new ride will be unveiled on Thursday next week. -

According to Parks and Resorts Scandinavia, the owner of Kolmården (P&S also owns Gröna Lund and Skara Sommarland) Wildfire will be a world’s first! Regarding budget, Kolmården is very profitable and is today one of the bigger European wildlife parks. For 2015 they are investing 75 million SEK ( 11.7 million USD) in a new kids area themed to Bamse http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bamse Considering all this, I think we are in for at treat! -
What do you like about Gröna Lund?
alejon replied to A.J.'s topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Gröna Lund is part of the Stockholm soul I would say, the location of the park is essential to its success. Many visitors doesn’t really care that much for all the rides, but are more interested in concerts. A peek at Gröna Lunds facebook-page confirms this. Over the years artists such as Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, ABBA, Lady Gaga, Kiss and Alice Cooper have performed there. In the recent years they have invested greatly to accommodate concerts many times per week during the summer. They have also invested more in restaurants and brought back partner dancing (is this the correct term in English?), which used to be a very big thing in Sweden. For people most interested in the above they have the Gröna Kortet (The green card) which will give you free entrance to the park every open day, but you will have to pay for the rides. This card costs only 240 SEK, or about $37. In comparison Guldkortet (The golden card) which also gives you free rides costs 1499 SEK, about $233. Both Tivoli and Liseberg have similar options. But I like Gröna Lund mostly because the atmosphere with old buildings and rides everywhere. The best way to spend a day at Gröna Lund is to do it with a couple of friends. Get there around opening to get the most out of your wristband, then as the evening sets in have dinner at one of the restaurants and have a few beers. Then you could have a few more rides or just enjoy the view of Stockholm. Oh, the funhouse is fantastic! -
Three closest parks near you
alejon replied to mike541x's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Living in northern Sweden (Luleå) isn't ideal for visiting theme parks.. 1. Power Park 535km (6h 53min) 2. Särkanniemi 742km (9h 23min) 3. Gröna Lund 907km ( 10h 34min) Luckily it takes just 1h 20mins to fly from Luleå to Stockholm, and there are lots of flights to choose from and the fares are low. -
Weird Coaster Facts

The country with most coasters per capita is Denmark, where there is one coaster for every 148 000 inhabitant. (Statistics from rcdb and wikipedia) -
Not really, since the viking-age ended almost 1000 years ago. I Think this could be a really coool park, and hopefully not the only vikitng-thmed park in Scandinavia. There's also plans for a new park in Uppsala, about 70km North of Stockholm, with a viking theme, but that is a different thread I think.

I believe that 54m is the total height difference between the highest and the lowest point of the track. Not between the track and the terrain.
