  1. No, plenty of good options nearby. At 44 & 141 you can get either a Hampton or a Drury for around $100. If you're more budget-minded, Travelodge in Grey Summit is a good 2-star hotel for around $70. Those hotels are all about 10 minutes drive from the park. If you have a parking pass, you really should look further afield. I have personally stayed in all three hotels I mentioned and would recommend all of them.
  2. Why/how would it fail?? I am sure it will be a huge hit for the regular crowd. I am not convinced, however, if it is really what the park needs. We will see if it boosts attendance, time will tell. What the park needs is to have fewer broken things. Hannibarrels was the huge eyesore, and it's now tremendously improved. This can be nothing but good for them. It should save on maintenance costs vs. Scooby-Doo in addition to fitting the DC Plaza theme and really sealing the immersion there. I vote the park keep up this practice of replacing old, broken rides and at the same time renovating the whole ride area.
  3. Not sure what the footprint of the 4D is compared to Ninja, but if it's smaller, that could be a great move. The park has already said that east will be their next expansion area. When they take out Ninja (it's a when, not an if), they should use the spot currently occupied by the queue and station for a path over the tracks to the east. That way there are two access points to the expansion, not just the one by Tidal Wave. This will leave a smaller footprint for Ninja's replacement (and Ninja's already pretty compact as it is), so a 4D S&S could really be a win for the park.
  4. Thank you, Larry. Much appreciated. Absolutely! I'll be there for Holiwood Nights, where there will be ample opportunity for night rides. That helix in the barn looks amazing, and surely will be incredible in the dark.
  5. Gravel lots also don't hold as many vehicles as paved lots, due to not being able to have lines delineating parking spaces. Having an asphalt or cement lot looks more professional and holds more vehicles, so it's definitely worth the extra expense. Gravel parking lots aren't cheap, either, due to land clearance and grading, so it's not really that much more to pave it. Better to pay a little extra and do it right.
  6. Yes yes yes, and you want it. Badly. I got the platinum pass last summer, and it was worth every penny. $110 last year (I don't know about pricing this year), but it will make your day. I rode more coasters than I have ever ridden in any one day ever, and the double rides on everything are AWESOME. Invest in the platinum pass, please. You will not be disappointed.
  7. The park has been making general improvements for the last 9 years. Let's put things in perspective. We in the Ozarks went 9 years between Powder Keg and Outlaw Run. Both are awesome. Quality over quantity. And enjoy those new kick-ass water slides. We wanted to come this year, but we'll be there next year. You're getting some great new attractions, and that's something to celebrate.
  8. The DC Comics licence isn't going anywhere. They've had it over 20 years and it's mutually profitable for both companies. Honestly there's no need to worry.
  9. Yeah, those slideshow "news" stories usually only barely get the facts right, if that.
  10. Couldn't agree more. Holiday World really seems focused on ensuring all their guests have a great time, which is really the heart of the entertainment industry. You don't take care of your guests by putting up artificial barriers. Just a few simple rules to make sure everyone has fun is all that's needed. I'll be at Holiwood Nights too. Less than two months now! To remind everyone what it's all about:
  11. On the other hand, that mentality can actually be good for a park. The park knows it's safe, and most people who visit the park know it's safe, so a coaster having a reputation for being extreme can be a source of word-of-mouth advertising. Kids often don't have the background knowledge or the vocabulary to describe something, but they can be as perceptive as adults are. This kid is likely enjoying the feeling of airtime, and just stated it in the only way he knew how. You spotted a future enthusiast!
  12. ^ Awesome picture, looks like they're just about set for opening!
  13. Just getting around to posting the trip report from last Sunday. we arrived at opening, and there was a light rain falling.we headed immediately to Fireman's Landing, where Firefall was still in testing. We rode Up the Ladder and the Dalmatians, then went back to check on Firefall. Seeing that there was an employee on the ride, I knew testing was nearly done and got in line. After the first group went though, they shut down the ride again and called in maintenance. Firefall was shut down until the afternoon, and when it finally did we open, the wait was over an hour. Since I have ridden it at Celebration City, I decided that the wait wasn't worth it. We rode everything else at Fireman's Landing, and everybody had a good time. This really is a major upgrade from Geyser Gulch. My son, who is 5, was much braver than he was last year. He went on Thunderation for the first time, and loved it! We went twice in a row. We were busy enough all day that I didn't take a whole lot of pictures, but I do have a few. Love the new look of the lakefront; it really is improved. Little-known fact: Gravity is rreversed on this ride, and you actually fall upwards. That's why there's a trampoline on the ceiling. We're here for training! No fear of heights here! Looks great, and you can see it from all over the park. I love how forested this park is, even with the new areas. This is from the queue for the wave swinger. Someone was photobombing my nice shot of the forest. Oh well.
  14. ^ Glad you had a good time. Wildfire is best on the back row in the outside, actually has some great airtime there. Outlaw Run is amazing, and I'm glad you got so many rides on it. Bad weather days can have great surprises like that. Outlaw Run can run in colder weather than any other coaster except Thunderation, and it tends to be largely immune to rain and wind. Just bonuses to an already fantastic coaster. Come back again when the shows are running and the weather's better. It may be a while before you come back, as Cincinnati is a significant distance (enough that the last time I was there was 2004), but when we get another great coaster--and SDC will, it's only a matter of time--you'll need to make another trip out. As for me, we'll be at the park tomorrow, our first for the year. Can't wait to revisit some old favourites, especially that shot tower that's been closed since 2008. I've been very excited for Fireman's Landing for quite some time now, and everyone should have a good time there. Thanks to everyone who's provided photos so far, and I'll try to get a few of my own tomorrow too.
  15. I totally agree. I hope Manby helps them find a replacement that's just as good as he was. SeaWorld definitely needed a better CEO though, and I'm sure he'll really help the company improve. Hopefully he'll help them market their parks better. I like that in the press release, Manby came out swinging by saying they have great animal care. He needs to keep the conversation there. I personally have loved the changes to SDC in recent years, and SeaWorld needs a similar revitalization. This has the potential to be good for both companies. The Herschends were very picky when hiring Manby, and they will be just as picky with his replacement.
  16. Here's the official rain policy: If you experience 90 minutes of continuous rain or weather interruption that restricts rides, attractions and your fun at Silver Dollar City, please stop by Guest Relations before you leave Silver Dollar City to receive a complimentary return ticket valid for any 2015 operating day. Season pass holders, if you used a Guest Voucher, we will trade your guest voucher for another visit. I've not used reservebranson.com myself. I do know that last year a couple of the Branson ticket places on Hwy 65 were selling two-day tickets for the price of one. I don't know if that is true again this year, as it's still Branson's "pre-season." SDC itself sells a second consecutive day upgrade for $20 if you buy the ticket at the park.
  17. Two day tickets would be wise. The forecast is for rain Thursday also, but a high in the 50s. On SDC's website they spell out the temperatures at which each ride will close, so plan your day accordingly, and the chance of getting to do everything you want is pretty good.Plus, two days will give you a chance to take your time and really experience the park. Many of the craftsmen are out already, and watching glass blowing is a good way to spend your time while waiting for rides to re-open.
  18. ^ That's disappointing. But the good news is that all the other coasters are very weather-resistant, so you'll almost assuredly get to ride all you want, as long as there's no lightning.
  19. It's been raining all day, and Powder Keg usually closes in even a drizzle due to the laser sights on the moving track.
  20. Oh yes, another list thread! American Eagle (Blue) Batman (SFGAm) Cosmic Coaster (WOF) -- yes, it's the only C I have. Demon (SFGAm) Fire in the Hole Goliath (SFGAm) Jack Rabbit (Celebration City) -- again, the only one Little Dipper (SFGAm) Mr. Freeze (SFStL) -- tough call between this and Mamba Ninja (SFStL) -- I wish I had another one to put here.... Outlaw Run Prowler -- over Powder Keg, but not by much Road Runner Express (SFFT) -- yes, over Raging Bull, definitely Screamin' Eagle Thunderation Vertical Velocity (SFGAm) Wildfire -- over Whizzer, but a hard choice to make X-Flight Zambezi Zinger
  21. Thanks! I might have to buy one of those Trailblazer Pass. I wonder will it do any good. Oh well. I'm still deciding on my theme park trip for March. I'll have my mind made up soon. They do great, but don't last long if you only get the six use version. The unlimited one is well worth your money, but still I belive its only good for one outlaw run ride. Only in 2013. Last year the regular Trailblazer was still limited to one OR ride, but the plus was unlimited on all eight rides that are included in the system. Of course, SDC hasn't posted the rules for this year yet, so it's all speculation at this point.
  22. Just ordered a Playstation 4 today! I usually give new systems about a year to work out the bugs, and it seems a good time to jump in now. Came bundled with Last of Us: Remastered. Haven't had a chance to play that on PS3, and I've been a fan of Naughty Dog since the Crash Bandicoot days. Very much looking forward to this when it arrives.
