What's new for 2017?
larrygator replied to larrygator's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
FYI - I'm in the process of compiling a similar thread for 2018. I'll probably release it in two weeks, we are just waiting to fill in some gaps. -
Bay Beach Amusement Park Discussion Thread
larrygator replied to uwgbdork's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Bay Beach appears to be ready to build their second miniature train loop. The park currently has three trains running on a single track. They are proposing the construction of a second track and they would keep two trains on the existing track and move that third train, plus one train that was donated to the park, to the new second loop. The track for the new loop and the second train were donated by the Carmex family back in 2014. http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/story/news/2017/09/17/new-bay-beach-train-track-green-bay-city-council-vote/671563001/ New Bay Beach train on track for Green Bay City Council vote Jonathan Anderson, USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin Published 5:49 p.m. CT Sept. 17, 2017 GREEN BAY - Construction could start soon on a new $1.2 million train ride at Bay Beach Amusement Park, while the proposed redevelopment of East Town Mall is scheduled for a final vote Tuesday. Here's a rundown of key government meetings this week in Green Bay. New Bay Beach train could get OK Green Bay City Council members on Tuesday could approve a second miniature train ride at Bay Beach Amusement Park. The new ride would be on the west end of the amusement park and would travel behind and beneath the Zippin Pippin roller coaster. Two trains would be on the new tracks while another two would run on the existing tracks, said Dan Ditscheit, design and development superintendent for the Green Bay Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department. Construction of the second train ride will cost about $1.2 million. Council members on Tuesday are scheduled to consider a contract with Advance Construction for the project. Should the new train ride move forward, crews likely will start work within weeks and it could be open by May, Ditscheit said. Money for the project comes from the sale of tickets, concessions and souvenirs at Bay Beach. The City Council meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall, 100 N. Jefferson St. -
July 27th, 2017 - a return trip to Indiana Beach. Let me start off by saying that Indiana Beach used to be one of my favorite parks. Years ago it felt like Knoebels lite. My last trip was back in 2011 (I think) and by that time it had started to slip since the park was purchased by Morgan RV in 2009. The life just seemed to be sucked out of the park. The vibe just wasn't right and small problems seemed to grow into larger issues. But my main concern in 2017 was, how are the wooden coasters running. Cornball Express still runs well, but could use more TLC, I think my rides were also hindered by being in a near empty train. The coaster felt like it wanted to breakout, but just couldn't. Hoosier Hurricane is still a fun ride as it intermingles along the inner pier with Cornball Express. Lost Coaster of Superstition Mountain is as strange as ever. Only know there is only one car (when the coaster operates) making lines insane on summer weekends. Luckily my visit was on a Thursday and I only had to wait for one train. When I returned later for a second ride, LoCoSuMo was already down for the day. Maybe 50-60 lucky riders the whole day. I enjoy Tig'rr Coaster more than usual. The crown jewel of the park is still Frankenstein's Castle. However, maybe my memory is failing me. Did there used to be a room, with multiple doors, where only one door was an actual exit? Overall the park (even with few visitors) seemed more vibrant than my last visit. The only big disappointment was made of the video games I used to play in their arcade were gone. However, the tacos at Indiana Beach are still huge and filling. This would be my first time entering from the south entrance over the suspension bridge. Such a beautiful view My first stop would be LoCoSuMo. Oh good, only a 30 minute wait How can you make a scrambler more fun? Put it on a pier How can you make a Paratrooper more fun. Put it on a pier. How can you make flying scooters more fun. Well you get the idea. This is a carnival ride...see the wires. A nice pop of air at the top. I did not play, even though only a couple of older people were playing I'm sure they would have kicked my A55. The first El Loco in the US Where is the ride operator when you NEED her. Tig'rr Coaster impressed me this time around My favorite flat in the park. Cornball waiting for riders Not in tip top shape, but I'm glad they still have a shooting dark ride. Worth the upcharge The only place to eat in the park Nothing fancy, but damn tasty.

http://www.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/community/article/2111489/ocean-park-closes-halloween-attraction-after-man-found-dead Ocean Park closes Halloween attraction after man found dead inside haunted house Theme park investigating first fatal accident since annual festival began in 2001 PUBLISHED : Saturday, 16 September, 2017, 6:47pm UPDATED : Saturday, 16 September, 2017, 11:38pm Xinqi Su Police received the alert from the amusement park at 2.06pm Saturday and confirmed a man surnamed Cheung had been certified dead at Ruttonjee Hospital. Cheung was a friend of an employee of a Swire Group subsidiary, the conglomerate confirmed. The group’s staff association had arranged a visit to the park from 1 to 11pm Saturday for an annual staff event. Ocean Park CEO Matthias Li Sing-chung said Cheung was found passed out five minutes after he had entered the haunted house. The area where he was found was supposed to be “a place for our staff to carry out some maintenance work”, according to Eva Au Yeung Yee-wah, the park’s director of events and entertainment. A haunted house should be designed to offer a single way out for visitors Greg Wong Chak-yan, structural engineer Called Buried Alive, the attraction consists of a slide and haunted house. Guests take the slide to enter the haunted house alone as part of a “single-player” experience. A park spokeswoman said Cheung ventured “by mistake” into a backstage area open only to staff after he had finished the slide and entered the haunted house. Greg Wong Chak-yan, a registered structural engineer, said such an area should normally be locked to prevent guests from inadvertently entering it. “A haunted house should be designed to offer a single way out for visitors,” the former MTR staff member said. “If an emergency exit is required, a sign should be posted.” Priscilla Leung Mei-fun, chairwoman of the Legislative Council’s justice and legal services panel, believed the park had more to answer for than saying Cheung entered the area “by mistake”. Leung said it would be a point of legal contention whether signs provided by the park were clear and effective inside the haunted house, a place she described as dark and leaving visitors in a fearful state. “Under such circumstances, shouldn’t an area closed to guests simply be locked or equipped with automatic lighting?” the barrister asked. Li said medics at the park had administered first aid to Cheung and called an ambulance as soon as they found him. The park and Swire Group offered their “deepest condolences” to the victim and his family. Li added that the needs of Cheung’s family would be appropriately addressed. The death marked the first fatal accident at the attraction since it was introduced in 2001. [The attraction consists of a slide and haunted house. Photo: Joshua Lee] Au-yeung said the case was under investigation. The park has closed the attraction to facilitate an investigation into the incident by the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department. The department believed Cheung was hit by “moving parts of the slide” in an area normally closed off to visitors and that the accident did not involve mechanical failure. The slide, measuring 4.5 metres long and 2.5 metres high, was approved by the department on Thursday after passing a comprehensive examination by independent inspectors, it added. The park is not allowed to reopen the attraction until the department lifts its suspension order. The park’s Halloween festival is open to the public from October 5.

TPR's Ever Evolving Park Index
larrygator replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
As the season is winding to an end for most of the Northern Hemisphere, thank you and for all that have helped. We have over 14,000 photos across 800+ parks that have user submitted photos and we will continue to add as you visit more parks. If anyone has an opportunity to review their home park in the Park Index and provide feedback (about missing or closed rides) we can keep The Park Index as accurate as possible, I can't do it all myself. Please submit only your own photos. Do not take them from another person or website. You can post your photos of any size in this thread or in your Trip Reports Or you can use the submission tool in the Park Index, but in that case please resize your photos to 800x600 or smaller before submitting, otherwise they are difficult for me to review and place in the Park Index. Or if you have any of those photos already in an existing Photo TR just send me a PM and let me know. July 26, 2017 Adventureland I had been to Adventureland once before, meeting up with the TPR Tour (I think it was in 2010). The park's ride line-up has not changed much since then. Silly Silo (Rotor) and the Log Flume are gone while Storm Chaser (Windseeker) and Monster have been added. Most enthusiasts would consider this a huge upgrade and I concur, certainly worth the 4 hour plus drive from Chicago. Monster is just a lot of fun and comfortable to ride. I visited mid-week so lines were minimal. I rode all the other wood coasters again this trip but did not ride the Hopkins coaster. Rain was in the forecast and it was drizzling lightly at times. I was very concerned even making the drive to Iowa since there was a 60% chance of rain. So I got my fill of Monster (about 8-10 rides), the woodies and a few flats. Beyond the rides, the food and aesthetics were much better than my last trip. For one, in 2010 the Main Street area was under renovation after a fire. I don't know how it looked before the fire, but it looks great now. Also, a gripe I had in 2010 about the park was the food selection. Maybe I just wasn't looking in the right places, but the offerings were much more varied this year. In the games areas, the skeeball is still only a quarter, yay. But my skills have diminished and I only won one prize. I think the park may have raised the minimum score you need for a prize. The employees were as friendly as my previous visit, a definite strong suit for the park. The front of the park and main street are beautifully done. Completely restored since the 2010 fire. They even have live bingo. Must investigate I'm not a big fan of thick cut bacon (too chewy) so I got the popcorn. Maybe this could become Tokyo Disney's next flavor. First ride of the day will be this Monster. For my second ride of the day I also choose Monster On my third consecutive ride I got in the front row with a view like this. Thankfully you can follow the queue line and don't have to battle the barbed wire that protects Monster. Time to ride out the Tornado as it was drizzling and the skies looked like they had more in store. In the interest of time I passed on Dragon, with the thought that I might ride it later if the rain held out. Outlaw making its getaway. I found this food stand next to Outlaw and got some beef jerky, which is one of my favorite snacks. They also had cream soda. This is the GOAT of amusement park food cart. OK, the waffle cart at SFGAdv's HITP and Tokyo Disney popcorn cart are great also. Elsewhere in the park I caught the magic/juggling show. The left side of the park is loaded with fun flats Like this and their paratrooper and shady places to relax The park now also has a beer hall. The park has placed an emphasis on adult beverages, opening a few places since my last visit. Even with the blurry picture you know what this place sells. So. good. I planned to hop on the park train after finishing but the skies started to darken so I headed to my car. Twenty minutes later it looked like I was trying to outrun a storm. Then the rain and the Los Angeles Fire Department showed up. LAFD in Iowa, WTF? Well with this rain I think the fire department can return to California. Before crossing the Mississippi back into Illinois I pulled into the most scenic McDonald's Parking lot overlooking the river. With the intention of visiting Antique Archeology (from History Channel's American Pickers) The show where the boys dug this out of someones backyard in Massachusetts was one of my favorite episodes. Next up will be my trip to Indiana Beach.

July 25th, 2017 - Six Flags Great America I anticipated being really tired this day and did not want to do a lot of driving and Tuesday's are usually a good day to visit Six Flags parks. This was my 3rd trip to SFGAm with the most recent visit being in 2010. I thoroughly enjoyed my previous visits but was worried about this trip since a few friends have not been as thrilled with recent visits. I did have a very good trip with my only issue having to deal with the food service. I love JBs Smokehouse but the wait time was almost an hour from getting on line to getting my food. In hindsight, I should have tried JBs Smokehouse Express as the line was much shorter for their limited menu. Also I was surprised there was only one Coke Freestyle location in the park, but was then more disappointed 5 weeks later finding only one machine at SFoT. I opted not to get Flash Pass and in the end didn't wait more than 30 minutes for any rides. X-Flight and Goliath were both new to me (as was Joker). I must admit the B&M Wing coasters are starting to row on me and I rode X-Flight 4 times. Goliath was also a lot of fun, I have heard some list it as their least favorite RMC, but I prefer it over the Texas ones. I used to rag on Raging Bull in the past, but I enjoyed it more this visit. I still love the flat ride collection at SFGAm and that's why I consider SFGAm (along with SFoT) as the most complete SF parks. I was also finally able to ride Sky Trek Tower. I liked X-Flight more than I probably should have. Goliath appeared to have a 30 minute wait. Since I didn't care about my row, I went the Single Rider route and saved about 10, but still got a ride in the second row from the back. Picked up another Joker credit. This ended up being the longest wait of the day, due to a 15 minute protein spill delay. I'm always a big fan of Justice League Even with this line If all the Justice League rides had this sign it might cause less confusion for the GP. Then again nobody reads the signs. I'm not so sure about that. The park wasn't dirty, but I've seen cleaner, I love the support going through the building. Still runs great after all these years For the second meal of the day, I went to where the lines were short The Southwest Territory stills looks great I completely forgot to go back and ride their Calypso.

So I arrived home from my drive from Camden Park at about 4AM on a Sunday morning and had a 24 hour turnaround to be at Newark Airport for a 6AM flight to Chicago. The main purpose of the trip to Chicago was to ride a few of the wooden coasters that I have not ridden before and also re-ride some of the wooden coasters that my have deteriorated over the years since i was last in the area. July 24th, 2017 - Bay Beach and Wisconsin Dells. After picking up my rental car two hours late due to flight delays I immediately got on the road to Green Bay. It was a Monday afternoon and Bay Beach was packed with families. The place was nice and I would have liked to ride a few flats but there was just no time. The line for Zippin Pippin was about 40 minutes and combined with the flight delay I had very little tight schedule. There was nothing too exciting or thrilling about Zippin Pippin. Besides the coaster Bay Beach is known for there train collection, which run on a long circuit. The surprise about Bay Beach was that they had a SCAT, I do not know they was a permanent installation outside of Beech Bend. The park also has a 9 nine giant slide. Did I really have to go to Wisconsin Dells? No, but I purchased a greatly discounted ticket online for $5.34 after tax to Mt. Olympus and also wanted to ride Avalanche is it used to be my second favorite wood coaster. At Mt. Olympus I realized that the park was closing in an hour. Actually, that wasn't a bad thing. For one, the parking was free. Secondly, I only needed to ride Hades 360 and Cyclops once and one hour was plenty of time. I had not been to Wisconsin Dells since 2005, Hades first year. Hades was aggressive during its first year, but not rough. Now it is aggressive and rough, but not as bad as i thought it would be. I actually would have ridden it again if I had more time. Cyclops last drop is not OMFG great anymore, but still a very good pop of air. Then I went to ride Avalanche. After taking 5 rides on Avalanche I can fairly say it is now rough but I still enjoyed it (much more form the less painful first row), but it is nowhere near my Top 20. Now I usually don't put much credence in the words of ride operators, but this one thinks that this will be Avalanche's last year with a new coaster on the way. Bay Beach is one of the few amusement parks owned and operated by a local government in the US. I was shocked to see a SCAT at the park. The Falling Star was down for the day, one of my favorite flat rides. Magic Mountain Slide Classic Eli Scrambler One of the trains A second train off in the distance. I don't have a picture of the other trains, but they all run on the same track. A little info about the trains The reason for the name of the park. But the real reason I'm here. Elvis' favorite coaster, but he really didn't seek out many coasters during his travels. The line was long I still have tickets left over. Before leaving Green Bay, I stopped by Lambeau Field $5.34 is still too much for the park. This 45 minute wait was actually only 30 minutes, allowing me time to ride Cyclops also. Waiting for the infamous last row of Cyclops Mt. Olympus went all out to engineer a way to keep this gate open. At Timber Falls, there wait 5 minutes between each dispatch of Avalanche. No big deal since they make you walk back through the queue and there was only 2 kids riding at the same time. After 5 rides, I whored it up heading to Knuckleheads to experience their highly themed air time machine. That gave me plenty of time to hit HuHot before driving back to Chicago POV shot I'm now a big fan of HuHot

I don't get why everyone says that El Toro is the greatest wooden coaster on earth. When it's really not. There are several wooden coasters out there that are far superior than El Toro. . . I mean, El Toro isn't "bad" but it really isn't the "greatest woodie on earth." The opinion of many (everyone) is more telling than the opinion of one (you).

Unfortunately, the ratio of portions or track with brakes versus portions of track without brakes is about one to one for Wild Waves. -

I figured it must be a BAFF day. I only stopped by on my way to Atlantic City to activate my 2018 pass. Surprising there was a short line at the cheesesteak place, so i grabbed a bite to eat. Of the two Freestyle Coke Machines at the Sky Bar. Only the right side one had Barqs Cream Soda. If you get it with orange flavor it tastes like a creamsicle.

Camden Park - June 22, 2017 Who doesn't love Camden Park? Well pretty much any enthusiast that passes through. The park is a little bit out of the way in that you generally need to alter your driving path by a few hours each way to get there. And let's face it, most enthusiasts are just looking to obtain credits and Camden Park is not that appealing in the area of coasters. This would be my second visit to Camden Park, with the first trip occurring about 10 years ago. On my previous visit I was completely unimpressed with most of the park, but at least it was fairly priced. On this visit I was pleasantly surprised with the improvements at the park. Great Dipper and Little Dipper are classic coasters but nothing to write home about, that hasn't changed between my visits. Camden still has the best run whip in the US (right alongside Rye Playland) no other Whip ride whips you around properly. The paratrooper still runs well. Since my last visit some of the older flats (Round-up/Bullseye, Hot Cat, really operating SkyDiver and Spider) have been replaced with Rattler (Frisbee), Slingshot (SBF Visa spinning coaster), Flying Scooters and Kite Flyer. But other huge upgrades were also apparent, The Sky Ride is now operating, they have a petting zoo, upgraded sit down restaurant, vastly better looking miniature gold course and most importantly and refurbishment of their classic Bill Tracy designed Haunted House. The park is still very rough around the edges, but an improvement from 10 years ago. Creepy clown still greets you at the parking lot entrance. Two of the newest rides (Slingshot and The Rattler) appear along the side of the park facing the highway. At every park, I've been to to ride these SBF spinners, they give you a lot of laps and the cars spin well. What makes their Whip so good. It runs properly and the cars "whip" you around each turn car each car fully swinging out then whipping you back in to straighten out the car. The petting zoo is on the left with the Sky Ride on the right. Since coasterbill is now reading this trip report I'll pst a second sky ride photo. coasterbill would probably also appreciate the low tech and ground built trough for their log flume. and the Paratrooper. There was recent talk in someone else's trip report about the missing last row on Big Dipper. The Little Dipper is also a must for those trying to ride all the wood coasters in the US. The train takes you on a loop around the sky ride, petting zoo, mini gold course, swan boats, flume, tilt-a-whirl and kite flyer) West Virginia Grille is another noticeable upgrade Although most of the parks kiddie ride are classics. Larger flat rides are a balance between old and new However, the most noticeable difference for me was the repainted Haunted House (even though it was done about 7 years ago) perform by famed Dark Ride Artist, Chuck Burnham While, I'm not a artist by any means, Chuck taught me the nuances of recreating Bill Tracy's style and using his color palette. Whether you are looking at the "ooze" dripping form the facade's roof or these shingles, each cut-out is handmade and painted. Even this simple looking railing takes time and patience to create in the Bill Tracy style. My apologies if the delay in my post this Trip report caused you to miss the fair last month.
