Oh, but they most certainly do...see below... Did Grandma really get run over by a reindeer? As far as I'm concerned, these count... -
Kings Island (KI) Discussion Thread
coolhandluke replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
KI desperately needed something with airtime, regardless of strength. While I'll take what is given, though, I agree, ginzo, that this may be a bit less forceful (or is it less forceless...?) than I may have hoped for originally (like an Intamin...or at least another bunny hop where that splashdown is). Though I must admit that the fantastic ranking of Behemoth in its inaugural year in Mitch's poll has me even more excited for this. Let's hope it is just as satisfying as its sister ride up north. -
^^^And to add on, it just wouldn't be as exciting. The point of a straight drop (especially highlighted by hypers) is to get that airtime feeling, have the feeling of the track pull out from under you, away from you. Inverts and flyers with straight drops would sort of feel the opposite, since the track would seem to be pushing you down more and more. Yeah, the Gs would be similar, but what you perceive visually would lead to the different feeling. Curved drops on flyers and inverts provide that feeling of the track curving away from you, and the trains feel like they are flung around and yanked back on track.

The "fit" of PTC trains
coolhandluke replied to KenniB's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
^He didn't say they were special. He was providing facts. Even though 1 foot wide doesn't sound right. Whatever. I hate the fit of PTC trains, and I'm only 32" waist at 140 pounds. They are no fun to get in and out of. Almost as bad as Arrow suspended cars, IMO. -
^^Even if it does "whoosh" through, the splash caused by the train (if the train indeed scrapes the water) wouldn't be ungodly bigger than if it crawled through. The splash isn't dependent on how fast something moves through the water, it's dependent on how much surface area disturbs the surface and its speed. You can splash water by punching it, but not by moving your submerged arm in a circle. In the same sense, Manta would make a splash as it enters the water (but still not a huge one because of the gradual entry and the train's "slicing" through). After the surface is broken, though, it won't create much (if any) more actual splash--more like a bunch of waves. I'm no qualified physicist (so please correct me if I'm wrong), but I just don't think the train's speed would be great enough to produce a splash so big as to warrant an entire MCBR. I think they're just hoping for amazing operations.

Carowinds Discussion Thread
coolhandluke replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
^I doubt it. Paramount didn't do hypers (so I guess you could blame them for that), so they wouldn't have put one on that land anyway. And CF just hasn't been in control long enough to originate a world-class attraction at all of their parks yet. Wonderland and Kings Island are two of the top 4 seasonal parks in North America in attendance, and thus make a lot more money than Carowinds. It makes sense to put hypers at those parks first. I don't think Carowinds would have a hyper now anyway, owning the woods or not. -
Carowinds Discussion Thread
coolhandluke replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
^^It is taking the place of (from what I've heard) an even worse coaster that barely worked. Look at it that way and it's an improvement. But of course you'll be disappointed if you compare it to a fictional B&M hyper you dream about at night. And the GP will eat it up. Which means smaller lines for Afterburn. Another win for you. And it was cheap for CF, so it's not like this used up the next 5 years' budget. KI got an ex-GL used Vekoma as well, and looky looky two years later. CF is really turning their attention to the ex-Paramount parks. Give it a couple years. Enjoy the new trains for now, and you'll get that huge ride soon enough. -
College Student Theme Park Employment
coolhandluke replied to dougstanton's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
This makes a lot of sense and actually helps me understand both sides of the previous debate. Most people on here seem more supportive of working for the experience of working at the park, regardless of specific duties. With Tyler's story (not to put words in your mouth, Tyler, this is just how I interpreted it), he was planning to work at CP for the thrill and experience of working a big ride. Didn't get the ride; don't want the job. I've had both trains of thought in the past, so I get both sides. As evidenced, talking myself through it helps me see both sides. [/thinking] ^Completely off topic, but were you the op there who would sarcastically hyperbolize all of the underwhelming stats of that ride? That op and one at Corkscrew who did the same thing gave me the best station experiences of the year. -
I'm very impressed, but I will say that you may want to correct a couple misspellings before submitting them. "Commercialism" in the Peanuts one and "sense" in the safety fuse one come to mind. Regardless of that, though, these are VERY good. I'd read them in the paper, for sure.

Nürburgring launched coaster

Based on TTD's line being 2 hours, I'd say there are a lot of people willing to wait over an hour. -
The Rumor / Crazy Idea Superthread

^They already have an airtime machine. And it's, like, twice as big. Greedy, greedy, greedy... -
^^I don't feel sorry for zoo animals. I envy them. Get red meat by personal servants every day, personal swimming pool, take a crap wherever you want, take naps all day, and all the while being a celebrity with thousands of eyes watching you, not caring if you do something embarassing. Only downside is it'd be tough to ride coasters...

I may have found a link error. I was browsing around and clicked on an Italian Job POV video, but the link took me to an unrelated video of an Italian park (Movie Studios Park Canevaworld to be exact) by a different user. I tried several different ways of getting to the video, but anytime I click on the link with the name and screenshot, it takes me to the other video. Sorry about the partial screenshots, but it still gets the point across. ...And it takes me to this video by "*Chris*" (which, by the way, is a good video in its own right). Apparently the Italian Job video is the only one by the Linde user, but I can't access it from anywhere. So I click on that "Italian Job CW" video by "xX-Linde-Xx"...

Carowinds Discussion Thread
coolhandluke replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
But Paramount was owning KD for most of those years, and they weren't into the whole hyper thing. No Paramount park had a hyper while owned by Paramount (SoB does not count). CF has been going through and adding a few hypers to those places, starting with the biggest and most marketable parks. Give it a few years. Who is to say Carowinds (or KD) isn't next on the list? I've heard rumors of hypers for both. I'm confused with this part. You say Carowinds won't get a coaster in 2010 because of Caro. Cobra, but then you give legitimate evidence as to how a big 2010 project could be justified. I'd say you guys are much more likely for a big 2010 installation than, say, KI -
But they're getting new restraints on the boomerang. Enjoy those (and your last rides on the log ride) while you can. I think you made the right decision first time by bringing it up in the rumor thread.

I'd gladly sacrifice a bit more time for these to buffer than to have them at the crap quality of Youtube. I've been watching the Mystery Mine video because I could compare it to the video you made available for download, and the TPRTV version is very close to the actual thing. It is a bit choppy in some parts, but overall much better than anything I'd find on Youtube. One thing I did notice on it was that the "rate the video" thing jumps around when you put the cursor over it and move from star to star. It only seems to do it on that one video (that I could find so far, anyway). Very minor thing, though. I may also be in the minority here, but I also like the way the video does not start automatically on its own. I'm not sure I have a good reason for it, but I just like that over than the auto-start on Youtube. Amazing feature, Robb. I finally won't have to worry about feeling impulsed to correct all the "ZOMG!!1!!!1!" messages on coaster vids and can enjoy them for all they're worth!

Europa Park Discussion Thread

That twisted horseshoe roll is going to put Maverick's to shame...those rocks will come damn close to your hands and head. This really looks like everything that is right with Maverick plus a vertical loop and that elusive heartline... . I want to go to there. Bad. -
^^One abbreviation...and two capitalizations, and two punctuation marks. Most people on this site won't mind if you screw up an acronym that isn't used outside of the coaster world, as long as your posts are clean grammatically. Use the shift key and that dot button, and you shouldn't have issues. On a more related topic, I'm really liking this more and more. But I'm *still* wondering why they didn't include that twist in the "official?" layout. Especially when everything else was quite precise (like the elevation measurements). Oh well, it was certainly a welcome surprise. It sure makes that crazy first half even more insane.

I don't care much about the blocks, as I don't think they'd actually use them as much as the animation shows. But to me, some parts of the ride seemed to be a bit bland and unexciting. However, I think whipping just over the people in the midways and paths as well as having the your selected music blasting will help make it more interesting. That non-inverting loop looks like it could really throw you around...awesome.

Did anyone else find it ironic that the lift hill company used Hulk as their background silhouette coaster? Anyway, interesting update. While I'm really looking forward to B&M and Mack, this was still a neat segment. I never pay attention to the chains...I guess they're a bit more involved than I imagined. -
Kings Island (KI) Discussion Thread
coolhandluke replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I too work at Kroger. Minors can't work the baler (the cardboard one) or the trash compactor (there is a difference). While it is sort of weird that 17-year-olds can't pull down a screen and push a button, it's much easier for the company to just prohibit it than to allow it until there's an injury involving a minor. Then the shit really hits the fan. Those laws and rules aren't in place because they don't think minors can do it; they're there to minimize the risk of legal hell if something unfortunately does go wrong. -
^^While I get your point and agree, those two pictures are terribly biased thanks to the lighting Now that it's been brought up, though, B&Ms sport quite a few nifty paint jobs. They mix and match colors on the rails, ties, spines, tie side of spines (see Mantis or Silver Bullet), even a racing stripe (Patriot) or vertical loop. Not to mention all the naked rails that still look good. I definitely like more than one color on the track (like Scream...I just wish the colors had meaning of some sort). I like I'd love to see Intamin do something like that, though I doubt that will happen. That blue on the Coaster Formerly Known As Medusa is sexy though. I'll take it.

Cedar Point. It took a big hit in the Depression (what didn't?), and never really pulled out of the slump afterward. It was sold in the 50's to a firm who decided to build a big housing complex on it (the marina was actually a beginning phase of that). Disneyland's popularity at the time saved it though, as the public fought to keep it as a park. They turned around from that scare OK.
