Kings Island (KI) Discussion Thread
coasterbill replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
The forecast for Sunday looks really good... clear skies, 50 degrees, winds light and variable. Everything should be open (including Windseeker which you've written off)... I don't see the problem unless they changed the forecast. Weather Underground -

This is my favorite thread on TPR. Thanks for all the great updates! -
I love that these rides are making a comeback. Sure these models aren't as good as the ones at Carowinds and Kings Dominion and they don't even belong in the same discussion as the ones from Knoebels but you can still snap them. We did at Cedar Point and Six Flags America. Any flyer that can be snapped is a fun ride.

Bland Parks
coasterbill replied to ScreaminNewEngland's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I like Dorney quite a bit but there's no denying it's a bland park. They have a ton of fun rides but very few that really stand out. I'll say this... every time we go to Dorney we end up liking the place more and more. The park is very well run, very clean and it has a very nice assortment of flat rides. There's nothing wrong with the park, it's just that it has absolutely no personality. -

Sea World Orlando is amazing. I remember sitting in the sun by the lake last year during Bands Brews and BBQ and just thinking that it was probably the most relaxing day I've ever had at a theme park. There's a lot to do but you never feel rushed, the atmosphere is great and it's a lot different than your typical theme park experience. We're actually considering driving down to Orlando in February for 2 days and visiting 2 parks and Sea World is one of them. It's not a typical choice but we love it there (and my girlfriend loves whales so I never had a choice in the matter anyway, lol). There's nothing bland about that park. Now this is bland... -

Dorney seems perfectly happy going after the family market which Great Adventure is completely neglecting. The family rides and waterpark are the major draw for them and they know it... I'd love a new coaster but we just got Stinger (LOL) a few years ago and most people think that's a brand new ride so I doubt it's high on their list of priorities. -
Top 3 Roller Coasters From Your Birth Year

1988... of the rides I've ridden Ninja at Magic Mountain is the clear winner. My top 3 would be 1) Ninja 2) Avalanche (KD) 3) Raging Wolf Bobs -

I hate you for reminding me that that ride existed. I think I have a headache just thinking about it. -

The Splashdown seemed to be working at Kings Dominion last week... actually a lot of the effects were... I was shocked. -
Top 5 Worst Standard 689m SLCs

The only ones I've ridden are Ming Eraser at SFNE and SFA and Serial Thriller / Thunderhawk at Six Flags Worlds of Adventure / Geauga Lake. Both Mind Eraser rides are terrible but I actually enjoyed the one at Geauga Lake. It was much smoother than the other 2. -

This is great news... I can't wait to get back to Fun Spot. Hopefully we'll get down there in February or March of next year. -
Bland Parks

I thought of Dorney immediately though I do kind of like the park. The only original rides in the park that have any real character are Demon Drop and Thunder Creek Mountain (I know I praise these rides a lot but they deserve it). Since the OP mentioned parks you haven't been to and have no desire to go to I immediately think of Michigans Adventure. Worlds of Fun and Valleyfair seem very similar to Dorney so I'd group them in too. -
Kings Dominion (KD) Discussion Thread
coasterbill replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I'm changing my opinion... I was basing it off of you not going to Cedar Point since Magnum opened, not Maverick which would have meant Raptor, Millennium Force, Top Thrill Dragster, Wicked Twister, Maverick, Maxair, Skyhawk and a ton of other amazing rides would be new to you. I think you should absolutely go to Kings Dominion in that case. Kings Dominion really has a lot of great coasters... Dominator, Flight of Fear, Volcano and I305 are the real standouts but Backlot Stunt Coaster, Rebel Yell, Avalanche, Ricochet and Grizzly are all very good too. Like I said yesterday I like Anaconda but the general consensus is that Hurler, Anaconda and Shockwave are complete crap. That still leaves you with a lot of great coasters though plus a great log flume, great drop tower, a great top spin (and I usually hate top spins) great flyers and 2 very cool observation rides / towers. It also means you get to go to Busch Gardens Williamsburg which is always a good thing. You might even end up liking it better than KD. -

You can't go wrong with any of those but I'd lean towards one of the first 2 options. I think I would lean towards Cedar Point since it feels a lot more like a vacation when you stay at Breakers and don't have to drive between parks. The actual resort feel the park has is unmatched as far as regional parks go. I'm also a little biased as far as coasters go as I think Millennium Force and Maverick are both better rides than anything at Kings Dominion including I305 but that's my personal opinion that many people will disagree with. I love I305 but I feel like Maverick is a smaller, better and more intense version of it. Both options are great though and if you decide to do the Virginia trip I think you'd love Busch Gardens Williamsburg as it's a very nice park with a great clientele. They have a few interesting animal exhibits too that aren't overly time consuming so they're worth checking out between rides. It's a great park with a relaxed atmosphere as you don't feel rushed like you do at most parks as they don't have as many coasters as the other parks you mentioned (though the coasters there are all great). Kings Dominion is a great park too but it's a much more standard corporate park experience. -

Woops... that was really an honest mistake. I meant to say the last 2. I'm actually a huge fan of Gatekeeper. I'm a huge fan of Sky Ride and Windseeker too but if they're closed it wouldn't stop me from visiting though I might regret it later as the Sky Ride is a godsend in that huge park... especially when visiting for multiple days. I'm very active but after our annual 3 day visit over Labor Day weekend my legs still need a few days to recover and that's WITH riding the Sky Ride on average probably about 5 or 6 times a day, lol. -

Sunday is "Guest Appreciation Day" so they're offering discounted admission, merchandise deals, game deals and a lot of dollar food. Link. I don't think this will bring all that many people in but they're making a desperate attempt to get people to show up. The fact that Saturday's forecast has been calling for rain or even snow and winds over 20 MPH that will likely close Dragster, Raptor, Gatekeeper, Windseeker and Sky Ride (not that anyone goes to the park for the last 2) may make some more people go on Sunday too but I still agree that it's going to be dead. By the way it seems like the park is having a lot of issues with wind closing rides this month. Is this typical of October on Lake Erie (it wouldn't surprise me) or is it just a coincidence? I know October on Lake Erie is generally very cold but I didn't know if wind was more prevalent than normal also. -

I don't get this Gemeni hate... I think Gemeni is a really solid ride when it's racing. It won't make any top 20 or even top 100 lists but it's fun. -

It would also break records for the worst suggestion in the history of the Canada's Wonderland thread. You must have this confused with the Darien Lake thread.
