Ccron10 Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 Oh no! Hersheypark has one of those horrifying Tornado slides, too! Didn't the monorail used to take guests to a bonafide factory tour? It did, but Chocolate World ended that and now there's just an unused 2nd station in the parking lot. There is also a unused ramp at the park station to ground level behind the old arena. Does the monorail date back to before they enclosed the park? The monorail was added in 1969 to serve as transportation to the factory tour. This was before plans were announced to turn Hershey Park into Hersheypark which was planned to be like Disneyland. But once the park was enclosed in 1972, the 2nd station was closed around then.
JimmyBo Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 This is an awesome report Erik! You truly got some great photos and I'm glad to read that your experiences in the park were great. Plus new credits are always a BONUS! Jimmy "Where are the videos Erik?" Bo
Erik Johnson Posted September 3, 2010 Author Posted September 3, 2010 ^ I have to admit that I am somewhat retired from making park videos during my visits. I simply got tired of bringing along stuff that I constantly need lockers or cubbies.
Wood Dragon 1988 Posted September 4, 2010 Posted September 4, 2010 Excellent TR as always Erik. I am threatening to make a trip to Knoebels this fall. Two years is far too long for me to not go to that park!
Erik Johnson Posted September 5, 2010 Author Posted September 5, 2010 (edited) I finally made it to Dorney park! I have been within a hour of the park several times over the years but I never managed to set foot in the park. I thought it was a pretty nice park. The park was very clean and operations were very good. I did not have time to experience the waterpark this time, but it really looked like a good one. I thought that the coaster collection was pretty good and I will go over coaster specifics/reviews here in a following post. Anyways, let us head on into the park: It must be a Cedar Fair park. I finally made it to Dorney Park. Yes, I actually never been here before. So, how many parks have this place? The first thing we rode was Wild Mouse. It is pretty much a standard mouse. Next was the ultra strange B&M, Hydra. Yes, very strange. It certainly is not a standard, cookie-cutter B&M. Reverse Jo-Jo! Yes, every report must include this. This was not very good. It was not too bad until you hit that horrible trim. Yes, this is a train. Yes, while it is a super tall mine-train, it is a fun one. I think you can ride just about every coaster in the park before this reaches the top. Wheeeeee! This is my all time favorite coaster logo. Holding Break = Super Scary. Fun and intense. No, I did not get this one. Even with the new name, you still get denied. I had no idea that there was a powered coaster here. You can actually ride this one. Soon! Ahhhhh! So pretty. Such a nice field. And yes, I am so super sad because I missed out on Laser. Two years, too late! At least they put grass in here. Yes, another shot. I wonder what used to be here. I guess this is the final year of Camp Snoopy. Will he still have his house in the new land? I bet all of this will still be worked in. Yeah, I am pretty pathetic. Looks like I can fit. Coaster train! I thought this this was a pretty solid ride We rode in the back row. Wheeeee! Even with a 10 minute delay at Steel Force, we cleared the park in around 90 minutes. Something is lurking behind those trees. I actually did not ride this while it was at Cedar Point. I guess I get a second chance. Is this the last operating 1st Gen Intaimin drop ride in the United States? I have only ridden three. This one, Freefall at SFoG, and Freefall at SFMM. Yes, it really does feel like you are riding inside a trash can. Does this mean that Dorney is an awesome park? Over the trees! Oh, they have one of these here. Good to know. So tall! ALL DROP TOWERS! Wheeeeee! Let us ride a train. That is just plain evil. Classy! The creek area is the nicest area of the park. You probably already have this one Larry. This too as well. Not doing it's thing. The Whip is pretty standard. Pretty area of the park. This would be the last ride of the trip. I always do these. There was quite a bit of Haunt stuff out. See? See anything new this year? Good-Bye Snoopy! Good-Bye Dorney Park! Edited September 5, 2010 by Erik Johnson
rollin_n_coastin Posted September 5, 2010 Posted September 5, 2010 Hey Erik, cool TR! I totally missed Thunderhawk in favor of more water park, since Dorney has a great one. Sounds like I didn't really miss out. Is it better than say, Rolling Thunder? Did you enjoy Hydra? I only rode it at night and loved it. I hear it's better than what was there before in any case.
triggernel Posted September 6, 2010 Posted September 6, 2010 Glad I'm not the only one who loves Storm Runner, I thought it was one of the best steel coasters around, and very under rated in my opinion. You never see that thing in anyones top 10 but it deserves to be there if you ask me. I guess that why it's called other people's top 10 Also I know VF is getting rid of their giant Snoopy tree.
Erik Johnson Posted September 7, 2010 Author Posted September 7, 2010 So, you don't need a child to ride the Grover coaster in Tampa? I know I read that somewhere and thought it was odd that Tampa would do it one way and Williamsburg would do it the other way. Glad to hear that's not the case! Williamsburg seems to like keeping old coaster stations around, don't they? Yep, there are no maximum height restrictions on any of the Grover coasters.

I checked the website before heading to BGT and Grover had a 54" maximum height restriction.
Erik Johnson Posted September 7, 2010 Author Posted September 7, 2010 ^ Wow, you are right. The website does say a max of 56 inches, though there is nothing on the ride's signs that says that. Rules of the ride.
saginawhxc Posted September 7, 2010 Posted September 7, 2010 Great reports. I've never visited any of the PA parks before this last weekend so Knoebels, Hershey, and Dorney are all parks that I have yet to visit.
cfc Posted September 7, 2010 Posted September 7, 2010 ^ Wow, you are right. The website does say a max of 56 inches, though there is nothing on the ride's signs that says that. BGW supposedly "discourages" adults without kids from riding Grover's Alpine Express when they're busy, but I have yet to see this enforced.

Hydra was interesting. I guess I sort of did like it for the very unique layout. You really do get a long of hang time on the JoJo Roll.
larrygator Posted September 10, 2010 Posted September 10, 2010 Erik - you are such an inspiration as I picked up the third Grover credit on Monday at BGT.
Mastersax68 Posted September 10, 2010 Posted September 10, 2010 I need to go here. Those Arrow Hypers are always slow. Good to take in the view of the park, though. Nice photos, loking forward to more.
