live2tell75 Posted April 17, 2006 Posted April 17, 2006 Hi everyone, I am in the process of looking to purchase my first digital camera. Does anyone have a suggestions? It dosen't have to be super fancy. I am looking for the following things: 1. Medium to small, something that is compact enough that I can keep in a cargo pants/ shorts pocket when visiting theme parks & riding rides. 2. Either a camera that has a lot memory space or a recomendation on a good memory card. 3. Probally just a point and shoot type camera. 4. Camera Pixel info: I am not sure. I don't plan on blowing my pictures up to much. Probally just take standard 4x6 maybe sometimes enlarging a photo to 5X7. 4. If possible I would rather spend under $500.00 for the camera and possible memory card(s). The reason I mentioned the above is because I am going on the TPR UK Trip this June. I wanted to have a a camera that is compact. Also so I can take a lot of pictures for 2 weeks and not have to worry about deleting pictures to make room for more. I figure the memory space should be able to last until I get home. I won't be bringing any type of computer on the trip to save the pictures on. Any suggestions of brands and or make would be appreciated. Thanks, --Eric J.
robbalvey Posted April 17, 2006 Posted April 17, 2006 Yes! Get this one: Sony Cybershot DSC-T9, 6.1 Megapixel 3x Optical/2x Digital Zoom, Digital Camera (DSCT9) You should be able to get it online for well under $500 (goes for about $350 at most places). For example: http://www.abesofmaine.com/viewproduct.asp?id=sndsct9bk&l=Pricescan http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?A=details&kw=SODSCT9B&is=REG&Q=&O=productlist&sku=419087 http://www.preferredphoto.com/product.asp?id=sndsct9&l=Pricescan You can get a 1gig memory stick for $60: http://www.meritline.com/sandisk-1gb-gaming-memory-stick-pro-duo.html If you want a good idea of the quality of photos this camera takes, every picture on this page was taken with it: http://www.themeparkreview.com/miniuk2006/bpb1.htm --Robb
Carnage Posted April 17, 2006 Posted April 17, 2006 Though it comes down to personal taste I prefer Canon. I've got a Canon SD500. Any of the SD series are extremely compact. Secure digital media(which the SD500 uses) tends to be cheaper them Sony's memory stick. But you probably can't go wrong with either.
live2tell75 Posted April 17, 2006 Author Posted April 17, 2006 Thanks Robb & Paul- I am going to Best Buy later today, I will definitely check both out.
joel0613 Posted April 17, 2006 Posted April 17, 2006 The camera you get depends on what you want to use it for. I just bought 2 new digital camera's. The first is a Digital SLR, the Nikon D70S. It's about $800 or so. Uses Nikon lenses. Very good camera. If you are looking for a point and shoot, the Canon SD600 6mp camera is excellent. Very small with great battery life. I carry it everywhere now. http://www.letsgodigital.org/en/news/articles/story_6482.html Hope this helps.
SharkTums Posted April 17, 2006 Posted April 17, 2006 ^Another thing to consider is your other 'stuff'. For example, we have a Sony Laptop and a Sony Video Camera. I can take the Sony Memory Cards and interchange them on all of these devices. If you have a laptop that has a port for an SD card, then go for that! Does that make sense?
ebl Posted April 18, 2006 Posted April 18, 2006 I'll second Canon. My wife and I both have one (mine is an A70; hers is an A80). Both of those models are discontinued, but Canons hold up very well and we've taken some great shots with ours. Eric
Hercules Posted April 18, 2006 Posted April 18, 2006 I'm probably really late on this one, but I'm with Robb all the way. I'm just not a Canon kind of guy. Crazy thing is that I was going to post something like this last week but never did. I actually went with an HP, and love it.
stew560 Posted April 18, 2006 Posted April 18, 2006 I had an old-school Sony DSC-S50 and I loved it until it got stolen. I then got the Canon A70 and HATE it. It's slow, clunky and heavy. That has really turned off for my liking of Canon. I recently bought a Sony DSC-H1 and I am SO happy I am back with Sony. I also have a Casio Exilim S3, that thing is about the size of the one Robb posted and that is my "carry to the park" camera. The canon is small, but nearly as small as the tiny ones. The only problem with the Sony above is the 2x Optical Zoom. But for point & shoot it will do just fine! Small Size + Sony = get the one Robb posted!
Carnage Posted April 18, 2006 Posted April 18, 2006 The only problem I find with sony is that they are overpriced. Especially the media. The cost of memory sticks are quite a bit more then the other non-sony medias.
live2tell75 Posted April 18, 2006 Author Posted April 18, 2006 Hi Guys, Again thanks for all the advise. It sounds like everyone has had good experiences with all the different brands. I looked at all of the brands yesterday at Best Buy. I decided to go with the Cyber-shot Sony DSC-T5 3.0X zoom & got a 1Gig memory stick. I figured a 5.1 mega pixel will work for me just fine. I don't plan on blowing or printing pictures up super big. The camera is very compact. So far I love it. I have friends that have a Canon, Nikon & Sony. They all said similar things like what has been said in this thread, they all love their cameras. Hopefully I will have a lot of luck with this camera. Thanks again for everyone's advice. I appreciate it. --Eric J.
