martinb
Ive only been on 2 old Intamin Coasters, Shockwave at Drayton Manor and Indiana Jones at Disneyland Paris, by my god they make horrible noises, when watching Shockwave I ask myself 'Are the wheels actually spinning round? because they sound like there not and there just grinding against the track, and it feels like it too!!! Exactly the same with Indiana Jones! Does anyone know if any other Intamin coasters have started to do same? Also I always thought that Shockwave was a B&M coaster but its not, its an Intamin, apparantly B&M just hepled to design it but it has B&M trains and B&M track!!! And what is it with Stan-up coasters, I just don't get the feel of a coaster when Im on one, I just don't like them for some reason, am I alone in this thought? Shockwave
Shockwave isn't a really great example of a stand-up coaster, altough the zero-G roll is awesome. Walter and Claude used to work under Intamin before they set their own company up, so a lot of their work can be seen under Intmain's name. Colossus at Thorpe Park also has the Intamin squeak or 'rattle' as well. It sounds horrible on a dry day!
robinschroder
Walter (Bolliger) and Claude (Mabillard) actually used to work for Intamin. They were very much involved in the design of stand-up coasters and decided to break off and form their own company to further develop their designs. That's why Shockwave looks like a B&M coaster but is listed as Intamin! Edit - I took too long typing - Tom got in there before me!
kenshinmac
Those are both very old Intamin rides. I believe that Intamins designs are much more refined these days and riding something like Rita, Collosus, or the new Stealth at Thorpe should give you a better impression of the company these days. Personally I think the Intamins are a bit more noisy than B&M coasters but thats ok because new B&Ms just don't thrill me.
martinb
^ There are signs that Colossus is starting make them noises! These horrible noises haven't givien me a bad impression of Intamin but an old B&M like Nemsis isn't having that problem! Thats why I asked if any other old Intamins where doing the same!!Because if they are, in a few years time Rita and co. are guna sound horrible!!! But maybe they use different wheels for their accelerator coasters?
viking86
My one ride on Colossus last summer did not give me a good impression of Intamins steel coasters. It was vibrating like crazy and it was really noisy. I dont mind loud coasters as long as they makes cool sounds (B&M) but something has to be wrong when the ride sounds like a car-crash. kenshinmac
You know I hear all this stuff on Colossus but the two trips I have had to Thorpe both days it was running beautifully... It didn't make this shimmy that people talk about and it was nice and quiet other than the wheels bearings... I was there last year and I loved the ride... I have heard other Intamins screech but I didn't hear it from Colossus. Is it possibly because both days I went were about 60-70 F?
Carnage
Personally I think the Intamins are a bit more noisy than B&M coasters but thats ok because new B&Ms just don't thrill me. I've always thought the other way around. Though I guess it depends on which rides you base your opinion on. I've gotten used to the B&M's that have that roar that you can hear acorss the midway. Or the one's where you have to stop your conversations in line every time a train goes by.
martinb
The roar that Nemesis makes is great to hear but the screaching sound that Shockwave makes, makes me cringe!!!!!!!!!!
rollerdude
I have not encountered this screeching sound you guys are talking about. The most I hear on Intamin's are just a rattling metal. It happens a lot on MF's yellow train.
KrakenKing
Well, I don't know if you'd really call it a "Fingernails on Chalkboard" sound... But while I was at Busch Gardens Tampa on Monday, Montu and Kumba made a "Whistling" sound while going around the track... I can't really decscribe the noise... hopefully when I get my new camera I can take a video of it and the noise will be in there... I do know that Montu made some horrible noise when going around turns and inversions, it was a very high-pitched squeeking sound, it was mostly noticable at the turn before the lift, the first drop, and the ending turn into the breakrun. Maybe it's just because they're old rides
martinb
^ Yes but they are B&M's, I was talking about Intamins coasters making the 'Fingernails on Chalkboard' noises! Ive been on many old coasters and its only the Intamin ones that make horrible noises!
Manic Monte
Well, MF really makes an irritating sound as it rounds the final overbank into the brakes. It sounds like someone smashing a bunch of metal together.
verticalzero
I have not heard "Shockwave" make any noise apart from it's "Roar" when going through the vertical loop. Anyone else ridden this Stand-Up "facing Backwards", its awesome, i wonder what "Mantis" would be like. I have heard "Colossus" at Thorpe Park making a grinding noise when going through it's "Cobra Roll". Why not try different trains and wheels..? Why can't the wheels and track be greased more to stop this..? It looks like it may "Valley" as it slows down so much. You will be able to see why when you visit the park this year on your tour of the UK
rollerdude
Is the noise your talking about the high pitched screech on wooden coasters at the end of the season? I hate that sound. It happens on Mean Streak all the time. It only happens on the wooden coasters though.
