AstroWorld Ride Being Dismantled Catches On Fire

Ride's Control House Left Smoldering All Night Ignited Flames

POSTED: 11:50 am CST January 4, 2006

HOUSTON -- Firefighters rushed to extinguish a fire at AstroWorld in southwest Houston Wednesday morning, KPRC Local 2 reported.

The control house of the ride known as Greased Lightning caught on fire shortly after 6:30 a.m.

Firefighters said the ride known was being dismantled Tuesday with extremely hot equipment and that the structure was left smoldering all night, which caused a small structure on the ride to go up in flames.

"Hot torches were being used to remove some of the structural metal that holds the ride in place. Apparently, some smoldering, hot metal fell underneath the control room of the ride itself and smoldered in the evening. That's what we determined was the cause of the fire," AstroWorld spokeswoman Donna Marie Jendritza told KPRC Local 2.

Arson investigators were called to investigate the fire but they ruled it accidental. An investigator with the fire department told KPRC Local 2 that some of the smoldering metal probably fell beneath the ride and set some dry leaves on fire.

Three people inside a business office at the park escaped the park without injuries.

Greased Lightning is one of the rides the theme park company is selling during a three-day auction at the park this weekend.

Jendritza said anyone interested in buying the ride should not worry.

"There's no damage to the ride itself … it was just to the cue house that the ride was attached to," Jendritza said.

Oklahoma City-based Six Flags Incorporated had operated the park, built in 1968, since 1975. Six Flags officials opted to sell the 109-acre site rather than make additional investments during a time of dwindling attendance. A real estate agent said he expects the parcel, which sits across the street from Reliant Stadium, will be split up and developed for a myriad of uses.

Sloppy copy editing...gotta love it

EDIT: OMG I just realized that it was called "Greased Lightning" through the whole article instead of "Greezed Lightnin'" which was it's proper name. Wow...and people wonder why I am ashamed to have a journalism degree!!! Sickening.

The Gods are not happy...

At least they're saying the ride itself wasn't too badly damaged. Sckwarzkopfs are becoming an endangered species of sorts.

Someone doesn't know how to spell... queue house. "It's okay, Johnny, just spell it like it sounds..."

Well, in defense of the newspaper, "cue" could be construed as a variant spelling of "queue" (according to Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, 10th ed.), but the latter is much preferred unless you're writing about a stick used in a snooker game. And "Greezed Lightnin'" is its (not it's) proper name.

That being said, I always have to double-check my posts because I have a bad habit of typing "you're" when I mean "your."

Good catch. Have you ever noticed that when people write compact disc they use a "k" like disk. Media does this all the time. If I am not mistaken the "c" is what makes it a trade mark.

ANYWAY. This is one of my favorite rides at AstroWorld. Even with the auction, I am not sure that it will have a much longer life..

I always thought that the word "Disk" referred to the storage device like a floppy disk, disk drive, all derived from the word "Diskette". The word "Disc" refers to the flat round object like a CD/DVD, frisbee, all derived from the word "Discus"

I know the disk in a floppy is the round thing inside the square.

I wonder if any of the parks rides will find there way down to Australia.....after all, we sent you back a boomerang coaster last year. This could be a good way for payback?:p

At least the park is trying to sell the rides first so we might see some of them around the parks in the future....

^^ I do... newspapers write for a business. Shouldn't they check for errors multiple times?

Anyways, nice find, cfc. I didn't think about that...

Anyways, the English language is so silly at times. Ooh, let's make two correct ways to spell "theater" to make us look smarter. "Theater/theatre" are both correct spellings.
