For all you history nerds out there, here's a patent showing Harry Traver's concept for a coaster car that can switch from a sit-down position to a lay-down position during certain portions of the ride. There's even a mention of an "added novelty" whereupon the car can be rigged to deliver mild electric shocks to passengers.

This is really neat. Basically the first idea for an X2 type of ride was a recliner on wheels. And it even had extra sensory mechanisms! Only nowadays we use flamethrowers instead of directly electrocuting the passengers.

Well, if they install these shock things on mean streak so that they put you asleep before it begins it wouldn't be a bad idea

I'd imagine there would be a lot of need for "cleanup" by the time the ride returned to the station if a park ever ended up enabling this "shock" concept. This could possibly be the worst novelty idea I've heard of for a coaster concept... Even worse than the Wooden Suspended Coaster.
