larrygator Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 Last night my friend's invited me to join them on a trip to Carlo's Bake Shop. They have visited the shop on many occasions and know Buddy Valastro. Buddy made a cake for their daughter's charity lemonade stand last summer. My friend's eldest daughter wanted to bring Buddy and St. Valentine's Day card she made. Unfortunately, Buddy was not in the shop this morning as he is business with the new factory a couple of miles away and also TLC's "Next Great Baker". I brought my camera and was debating not doing a PTR, but everybody in the bakery was taking pictures, so I joined in. We arrived at 9:30 and the barricades were not set up yet, we were actually the last people let in before they set up barricades and started handing out numbers. The storefront is not big and all. About 40 customers can squeeze into the shop and they are 10 counter people to take orders. Here are some of the pictures. To the rifght when you enter are some of the non-edible items you can buy. and to the left you see some of the articles that feature the Cake Boss, along with a picture of Buddy's father. More articles and some sample cakes. Full view of the right hand side of the bakery, that's where the cakes and cookies are. I couldn't even make it to the left side (which is where the pastires are) this is as close as I got to the pastries, but that didn't stop me from getting an eclair and here are the cookies I just saw the polka dot cake on the Next Great Baker as I was typed this report. Are you hungry yet? I really wanted that chocolate chip cheesecake on the bottom, but I would have had to eat it by myself. Can't to that since I go on a cruise in 6 weeks. I ended up with an eclair and a black & white cookie for breakfast. Some more non-edible items for sale in the bakery.
SharkTums Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 Very interesting. I sometimes watch the show, and I've seen Buddy compete on the Food Network before, something about him just really irks me though. I can't put my finger on exactly what, but it's something! I give him credit though, he took his bakery to the big time! How did the food compare to some of Little Italy's bake shops?
cfc Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 Those cheesecakes look excellent--send me one of each.
larrygator Posted January 17, 2012 Author Posted January 17, 2012 Elissa - I have to admit, I did not try a cannoli. FAIL! But I preferred the eclairs from Ferrera's in Little Italy over Carlo's. Although my friends have been to the bakery multiple times, this was only my first trip. There say Buddy is always cordial with everyone when he is in the store and the place is always packed. I meet Buddy quickly at a charity event last year and he was very personable.
Meteornotes Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 Not a huge Buddy fan either (like Elissa, something about the guy on TV bugs me), but those cakes look very good. I waited until after I ate to look at this, so I was immune to any temptation. Thanks for posting! dt
BeemerBoy Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 I've watched the show about a dozen times, and while I understand how he could be like nails on a chalkboard to some people, I sympathize with the man. Have you seen his sisters? It's amazing he hasn't killed one by now. Oh, and the Oreo cake looks delicious.
STR8FXXXINEDGE Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 ^ His sisters are SUPER annoying! I personally love the show and I do like Buddy. I can see why some people wouldn't though. Both of my roommates can't stand him and hate the way he pronounces certain words. Either way, thanks for sharing this, Larry! I enjoyed it and I would love to stop by there some time to get myself some yummy treats!
