Historic automobile coaster?

Hey, was just browsing Facebook and came up on a debate. I have seen this in amusement books so I am fairly certain it is an amusement device, but I was wondering if anyone here had more information. People seem to think it is for vehicular testing, but like I said, I have read about it in books and am pretty certain that it was a 'ride' of some sort. Does anybody here KNOW?

 

The only information the OP has was that it was taken in March of 1929 in Los Angeles.

OMG! I wanna ride this thing credit or not! That looks awesome fun. It must be prety freaky to have a car that close behind you though on that course.

That thing makes me nervous just watching it. It's not the coaster itself, it's having another "car" that close behind you. Yikes. Oh well, it was a credit... I think.
