dandaman Posted April 11, 2009 Author Posted April 11, 2009 The final day consisted of the awesome Field Museum, a kickass Chicago gangster bus tour and Gino's "OMG DEEP-DISH" pizza! And that concludes my first, but certainly not last, visit to Chi-Town. We shared a few laughs, a few tears (of laughter, I hope) and most importantly, I got a new state credit under my belt. Thanks for reading, everyone. El WIN OMG controversy! Hidden Mickey Hidden Mickey Hidden Mickey If you ever wanted to know where the Jerry Springer Show was taped (and I'm sure you did)... The Holy Name Cathedral has one visible remaining bullet hole from where Hymie Weiss, one of Capone's rivals and "the one man Al Capone was ever afraid of", was gunned down crossing the street to the church. In a continuing pattern, I failed to get an actual shot of the bullet. Gangster tour! We had no idea we were having this, so it was hilarious when the host ran on to the bus and scared the crap outta everyone. Not to mention he had an awesome Cagney accent, and made perfect off-color jokes. For example... we were passing the site of the famous Valentine's Day Massacre at the SMC Cartage Company (now a retirement home parking lot...) and he asked the band what Al Capone eventually died from. I'm a big history buff, so I said syphilis, to which he replied, "You got it... well, you don't GOT it, but... I mean I've never met you before so I can't say either way." I only took this 'cause the sign was all brightly-coloured and shiny, like most of my photo subjects. (The entire first part of this TR nonwithstanding.) I conquered the hell out of that pizza. This doesn't do the Gino's awesomeness pie nearly enough justice. If they delivered up to 5 hours away, holy crap, half my paycheck would go into it. So the main reason I came to Chicago, clearly, was to lose my deep-dish pizza virginity. Gino's East is the real deal, and it's the only pizza parlour I've ever seen with valet parking. Wallpaper goodness "Everything the light touches is our kingdom." "So when it's cloudy, our monarchy no longer exists? Better think that one through next time, Dad." "Neverending Story's" Falcor: The Early Years Y HLO THAR Elissa rodent quota: met. This TR has been entirely directed by 40 specially-trained Ecuadorian mountain llamas, 6 Venezuelan red llamas, 142 Mexican whooping llamas, 14 North Chilean guanacos (cosely related to the llama), Reg. Llama of Brixton, 76000 Battery llamas from "Llama-Fresh Farms" near Paraguay, and Dan Smith. Previously on LOST... "Huh? Oh, sorry, I was looking for my Hide-A-Key... damned if I remember which rock I put it under." "We bears are proud and majestic and... and... Ralph, what the hell are you doing?" ...BIGGER rack Nice rack "Hi... I'm a goat... with a Canon Powershot A550 for a forearm." "I hate those green-and-yellow T-Rex's... they're always so aggressive in a relationship and bite off way more than they can... oh crap, there's one behind me, isn't there?" Meet Sue. Sue is the largest and most complete T-Rex skeleton in the world. Sue also thinks Dinoland U.S.A. should replace the tacky carnival rides with an E-Ticket, but that's just her. SHOOP DA WOOP "Go tell the slaves to equip my monument with a gigantic bird-bird-weird eye thingy-Anubis. That oughta keep 'em busy." "Hi... I'm an Egyptian pendant. You may remember me from such hit films as 'The Mummy' and 'The Mummy Goes To Summer Camp'." "Just wait... it has to blink eventually... and when it does... BAM! Food for everyone!" "Our tribe died about 24 years and 51 weeks ago, waiting for us to come back with the kill." "Well, maybe you should have told me 24 years, 50 weeks and six days ago, you douche." "Ngongo, you've been waiting to strike for 25 years now. Just take the shot!" "No, Mbutu. We must wait until the lion statue sleeps." SOYLENT GREEN IS PEOPLE "Same" THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID Free tip: Use your animal droppings as soon as possible before they go bad. Now there's some change I can believe in! (And an ugly personal shot that I can't change...) Possum Money Weed Once again, the group entrance foils my best-laid plans for a full-frontal shot of the Field Museum. Tour guide said this was where they filmed part of "Night at the Museum" (P.S. Alan Silvestri's score is way underrated), but according to IMDB the interiors were shot in Vancouver. Oprah dominates over Navy Pier. Have I mentioned how much I absolutely love this city?
dandaman Posted April 13, 2009 Author Posted April 13, 2009 Follow-up: I have seen paradise, and its name is overnight delivery.
Hercules Posted April 13, 2009 Posted April 13, 2009 ^ I was just going to say, they totally send it anywhere you want. When I ate meat and cheese, Gino's was the place to be! Definitely in my top 3 pizza list. Freakin' amazing. I'm pretty sure it is the only place with valet parking AND total graffiti all over the walls. I love Chicago.
mcjaco Posted April 13, 2009 Posted April 13, 2009 And for those theme park enthusiasts, there's a Gino's East just south of SFGAm, in Libertyville. Take Milwaukee Avenue south for about six miles, and it's on the east side of the street.
DiSab Posted April 13, 2009 Posted April 13, 2009 Awesome pics. Again. And once again, your captions are full of WIN. That pizza looks absolutely orgasmic. Both times I went to Chi-Town we missed Gino's - it's on the list of things to do next time I make the trip.
cprocks22 Posted April 13, 2009 Posted April 13, 2009 MMMMMM Gino's East pizza... makes me want to get up and drive the 4 1/2 hours to Chicago just to get it! Great TR, Chicago is definitely one of my favorite cities that I've been to.
Sir Clinksalot Posted April 13, 2009 Posted April 13, 2009 Man, I REALLY miss Chicago now. Awesome Pizza AND the awesome Field museum. We didn't try Gino's while we were there but we did have Pizzeria Due and Giordano's. They were both AMAZING!!! (of course, we almost didn't get to Giordano's due to a jumper) I was a little dissapointed in the Disney Store when we were there as it was just a normal Disney Store and nothing special. Did you check out the Hershey store??? We now have to 2 of the 3 and just need the one in NYC. Certainly gonna check out the ganster tour next time we are there.
dandaman Posted April 13, 2009 Author Posted April 13, 2009 ^ Unfortunately our bus driver dropped us off with a giant pro-Christian protest(?) between us and the Hershey's Store, so no visit was taken. And for those theme park enthusiasts, there's a Gino's East just south of SFGAm... Good to know, considering it's 90% certain I'll be going to SFGAm at the end of June! Thanks a bunch for reading, all. If the planets align right the next TR should come from Chicago again!
paintballer Posted April 13, 2009 Posted April 13, 2009 "IMA CHARGIN MAH LAZAR" Haha...I'm sorry, nerd moment there
dandaman Posted April 13, 2009 Author Posted April 13, 2009 ^ I started taking a regular shot of the lion, but I noticed the light reflection and I just couldn't resist.
BeemerBoy Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 And once again, your captions are full of WIN. Indeed.
AllenA07 Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 So the pictures of the lions, would those have happened to be the Tsavo man-eaters? I know they're on display in Chicago, just not sure where. For those of you now wondering what the Tsavo man-eaters are, if you have ever seen the movie The Ghost and the Darkness, it is based on the true story of the Tsavo man-eaters. If you haven't seen the movie go rent it, because it really is a good movie.
dandaman Posted April 14, 2009 Author Posted April 14, 2009 The Tsavo man-eater sounds familiar, like it was maybe on a placard near it, so I think it was them. (Still trying to convince the parents to have Gino's deliver "just this once" to no avail. )
AllenA07 Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 Well I decided not to be lazy and check wikipedia, and sure enough they are at the Field museum, so it likely was them. If anybody is curious, between the two of them they are suspected of killing upwards of 130 people. So pretty scary stuff if you think about it.
