Prom Poll

I'm in a bit of a debate-esque thesis thing and am attempting to get some research behind my arguments. I would greatly apreciate your help if you don't mind!

This is largely out of curiosity, partially because I think nobody really pays attention to this, and partially because it might be useful in my argument.

 

My general argument is that prom (in general) seems to be more about the dress than the guy's tux. My points are

1. Dresses are usually more expensive, while the guy has the option of renting a tux

2. The title of "Prom Queen" is usually a bigger deal to girls than "Prom King" is to guys

3. Girls make a bigger deal over the dress than guys seem to over their tux (eg. "that colour washes me out" "everybody is wearing gold this year!" etc)

4. It usually takes a girl much longer to find the right dress than it does for a guy to pick out a tux

5. History proves this so. According to this article, prom started back in the early 1900's when women didn't even have the right to vote (where I live, anyway), and yet prom was an event that was all about them dressing up in their Sunday best.

 

Anyways, your vote would be greatly appreciated, and if you want to help even more, it would be really useful if you could comment what your location is to help my statistics. Also, if you have anything to add/argue, please comment it! It would be greatly useful to my argument

Don't much about the good parts of the prom tradition, but I've certainly found the bad...

They're dressed up for the Saturday strip.

This is why they shouldn't. The look like they're auditioning for the revival of "Star Search"!

My Senior Prom is coming in May & I'm just renting a tux. The most expensive part of my prom is the shore house my friends & I are renting for a weekend in Wildwood

Last year, I rented a tux for my prom. I asked my date what would be the best for me since she was more experienced with formal occasions than me. There's nothing wrong with guys renting a tux when their date is paying far more for her dress. Afterall, I was the one paying for both of our overpriced prom tickets.

My senior prom was held in San Francisco. I'm not sure what the prom culture is like here in the Denver/northern Colorado area.

Well, most of what I know is from 1991-94, so it's a bit dated. I think my tie and cumberbun matched one of the times I went, but can't be sure. Did the simple and traditional black rental tux. Can tell you that the dress was a VERY big deal. The hair was too, since half the girls at school were out the day of.

 

Every guy in the pic below had wardrobe malfunctions. Jason (bottom center) had some awful striped shirt from the rental place (it was the only one they had at the time). Guy on the left (can't remember his name, Cory?) had cuff links that dug into his wrists, scratching them up raw. The guy on the right is me, and my boutonniere fell off when I sat down to dinner and got stuck in my cumberbun. Halfway through dinner, I leaned back and got stabbed in the spine by the pin. First prom comedy. You gotta love it.

Prom dresses are very ridiculous for ladies to find out which dress has set them on. In fact, ladies' dresses are hard to specify rather than men. I think there's no any argument among ladies and men in their prom dresses.

Based on my two prom experiences, girls definitely seem to put a lot more time into prom than guys, between running around to multiple stores (most people where I live went to the local malls & San Francisco, which is like 40 min away) to find the "perfect" dress & shoes and then spending hours on their hair, makeup, etc the day of. One thing I thought was funny was how obsessed some girls were with making sure no one else had the same dress. Personally I couldn't have cared less, but I had a few friends who were like that.

My prom is this friday, and I've already decided on what to wear long ago. I personally think that girls spend too much time on what to wear for prom. Another pet peeve of mine is the "pre-prom dieting". Meaning when someone makes and follows this really strict diet plan so they can fit into their "2 sizes too small" dresses. We don't vote for "prom queen/king" here so there's not much competition.

 

My hair is too short to really style it much, so I won't bother with the styling. I can't stand having makeup on, so I won't get any done. I'm going to wear something like this, with dress shoes rather than heels:
