dino Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 Cool TR, seems like kiddie coasters are very popular during the TPR trips .
rollin_n_coastin Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 Sam, great pics! I especially love that of the one and only Rotor! Nice pic of the 'deliverance' flume! It was kinda creepy up there floating through the forest at dusk but that was a huge part of the charm. Boulder Dash, what more can be said? Just amazing. A top 2 right up there with Ravine Flyer II that bull at SFGA So hard to rank them, I definitely want to try Boulder Dash during the day. Im' sure it'll be just as awesome.
Goliath513 Posted September 2, 2008 Author Posted September 2, 2008 Day 3, Part 1 - SFNE (again) Breakfast time! American theming Will this be as painful as SFMM's? Before any pain could be endured, we broke it! Still broken. Maybe our Boomerang survival kits will come in handy! Before Tony Hawk, there was Pandemonium. Here come the GP! Cyclone had just the right combination of pain and thrills to make it tolerable! I see you, old track. Compared to Cyclone, Thunderbolt was smooth as glass! Already done that! I call this ride "Pain on a Stick" "How was the filming, Robb?" Something's missing here. Yup, we're back for more. This piece of Astroworld ride was amazing! Best standard tube slides ever! Yes, it almost beat out Maverick as #1! Next up, RYE "Surprise Park" Playland.
krazekiddd Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 I loved this park! First, Superman was freaking great! I loved being able to ride it over and over again. Sucks that I had to ride this before the bad Superman at SFA. Second, Jenn and I met the greatest bartender (Amy) at the waterpark. She was freaking awesome. Third, the Sky Swatter (death on a stick) is evil! Totally evil. I've never been in so much pain. Ok, so it wouldn't have been so bad if the restraints weren't automatic. It keeps going down and crushing you. When I breathed in, it would send more room and push the restraint further! Finally, the boomerang was actually fun. I don't remember it hurting. Only down side was when we broke it, we rocked back and forth for a minute like something snapped.
R.C. Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 More great photos, Sam! SFNE is one of the parks that I really want to go to. I'm looking forward to seeing the photos from the "surprise park" they should be interesting...
BossManXXX Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 i dont get that colossus picture, but trip looked fun
Goliath513 Posted September 6, 2008 Author Posted September 6, 2008 Day 3, Part 2 - Rye Playland On the bus over from SFNE Robb announced we would be going to a very special surprise park. Of course, we already knew it was Playland. This was one of those parks where you truly felt like you were going to get stabbed, mugged, or shot at some point. It was like a permanent carnival with carnys. Also, the typical park crowd is not the most economically or socially stable of people (if there's a better way to describe it). So us being mostly middle class whites felt a little uneasy walking around the park. We were greeted with arms open! Although being slightly run down, the architecture was pretty nice. Dragon Coaster. This is basically an old style woodie with a dragon themed tunnel as seen here. The ride uses the same style of trains as CGA's Grizzly, so I was a little unsure about riding it. To ride Crazy Mouse, you had to be under 6ft tall. Some of us who were under 6ft tall got denied while some of us over 6ft were allowed on. I was right on the borderline, so I got the credit! This wasn't quite one of those "wild mouse of death" experiences. Super Flight is a Zamperla Volare - which basically translates to "crap." The name reminded me of Cedar Fair. The conveniently placed first aid station will be needed after riding this! Their horse race was one of those rides where the ops were anal if you didnt' lean in the proper direction while riding. Are all horse race rides like this? House of mirrors takeover after dinner! Basically a ghetto Pirates of the Caribbean in a log. And no Jahan, the water was not 2 ft deep! The park looked quite nice at night! One last shot of Dragon Coaster before heading out for the night. Next up - SFGAdv!
R.C. Posted September 6, 2008 Posted September 6, 2008 Dragon Coaster looks interesting. Was there any themeing in the tunnel or was it just dark? Was there an obvious reason you had to be under 6ft on the wild mouse? It's weird that some people were able to ride and some weren't...
YoshiFan Posted September 6, 2008 Posted September 6, 2008 That rule doesn't make sense, I don't think any of the other Zamperla Wild Mouse coasters have that rule. I know at Morey's, it isn't in effect.
Goliath513 Posted September 8, 2008 Author Posted September 8, 2008 Day 4 - Six Flags Great Adventure After our pre-game day at the park just a few days earlier, I had my hopes high for the day. Unfortunately, right around noon, it began to rain. We decided to wait it out, but it only got worse, so we decided to leave early. I only had two credits left to get at the park when we got there (Dark Knight and Superman), but I never got around to riding Superman because of the rain. I guess I will have to come back and get the credit when I come here for that B&M dive machine they are building next year. Robb showing off Tyler's "Dark Knight pin boobs" Our day started off before park opening with ERT on The Dark Knight. Despite what negativity I had heard about this ride, I was not at all let down. In fact, I think other Six Flags parks should get this. The theming and pre-show were just as good as the ride. With the trim breaks on the hairpin turns turned off, it was quite the ride! After our ERT stop at Dark Knight, we headed over for ERT on El Toro. Many of us rode this 10 or more times during this time. I sure did! Tyler, this is what your phone would look like if you had lost it on El Toro instead of Dark Knight! GASM and the parachute tower. This looked like a pretty lame parachute tower compared to the one Knott's used to have back in the day... No log flume, or nice restaurant for us today. Panda Express will have to do... Nitro was running better on the pre-game day. Maybe it was the hot humid air that day which made it run better. Whatever it was, I remember it being much better the first day. Houdini ride just sitting there - closed and forgotten. This entrance reminded me of SFDK's entrance area! Virtual Army Experience - by participating in this attraction, you (unknowingly) agree to be sent over seas to fight in Iraq. Jahan abandoned us for the day, so we recruited Mike "WANK" Austin to replace him. Historical marker! After our lunch at Panda express, we basically waited around for the rain to let up. The coasters (except for Dark Knight) all remained closed and many of us missed credits. Those of us who did the pre-game day here were thankful we did not need to come back with the side trip group on our Dorney day. In this time of waiting, the only memorable moment was the TPR takeover of the tea cups. No photos because I didn't want to damage my camera. I've seen what happens when people take pictures in the rain - cost my dad his $200 new camera last summer. On the way out, we had 20 minuted to get from our meeting spot over by the carousel to the busses in the back of the parking lot. For those of you who know the park, you know how long that walk is. Well Tyler and I underestimated that walk and decided to redeem our free food vouchers at the Johnny Rockets at the entrance on the way out. Little did we know, this would press us hard for time. When we got our meals and drinks, we realized that we could not make it in time if we ate our meals. I think he sent his back, but I, not wanting to pass up the opportunity for free food, decided to eat my meal while running to the bus. Yes, you read that correctly. While at first I thought it was a big mistake, I actually got to the bus before many of the others, and did not have to buy dinner at the rest stop a few hours down the road. Ah, the memories of that day... seems like a lifetime ago. Next up - Six Flags "park most likely to be shot, stabbed, or mugged at" America
Fry Posted September 8, 2008 Posted September 8, 2008 Are all horse race rides like this? Nope! Well, at least Blackpool's isn't, and is a great little ride. That's why I was so at Rye's, cause Blackpool's is real fun, but the scary, shouty ops meant Rye's just wasn't. And we guessed that the Mouse rule was because the roof is stupidly low in the station - I'm not quite 6ft and still hit my head on the way out, hehe. Great PTR so far - looking forward to the rest!
R.C. Posted September 9, 2008 Posted September 9, 2008 Day 4 - Six Flags Great Adventure This entrance reminded me of SFDK's entrance area! Yeah. It does look really similar to SFDK's entrance... Although SFDK's is nicer because it has more trees. It's too bad it rained on you guys, but at least you had the pre-trip day there to get on most of the coasters!
Goliath513 Posted September 21, 2008 Author Posted September 21, 2008 Day 5 - Six Flags America Before we arrived at the park, Elissa told us about how Six Flags apparently does not really care about the park and to enjoy it now because it might not be around much longer. From the outside it looked like a nice park. This remided me of SFNE's entrance. We arrived at the park several hours before opening for ERT on Wild One, Batwing, and Superman. Two Face used to thrill people, but because people generally don't like being sprayed by broken huydralics, it is closed. Theming - I'll give them credit for trying. Older than Cyclone! So when we got to Wild One, they loaded the first train of passengers and it broke down. After waiting about 10 minutes, they unloaded us to try to fix it. When they thought they had it fixed, they sent us back on only to have it break down.By this time, we were starting to question the competence of the park's maintenence staff, so we decided to leave and head over to Superman. Guess what? Superman was broken too. So then park management decided to take us "backstage" to our next destination. This looked more like an alternate route instead of actually backstage. It's amazing how the oldest coaster here is the best one here. Most of the group! Despite their less than favorable operations, they got Joker's Jinx up and running for our ERT! I enjoyed this ride except for the fact it was just slow all the way through. Didn't we just ride one of these several days ago? Is it working? Now for our Vekoma flyer credit - Batwing. Now having ridden the former Stealth Vekoma flyer at CGA back in 2002, I was really looking forward to riding this and reliving the experience. This was much rougher than I remember Stealth being. I suppose the signature Vekoma "wheels don't touch the track" contributed to this. Or maybe it was my restraint not ideal for people as tall as me. Afterall, I've grown about 1 foot in height since I rode Stealth. Anyways, back to the pictures! Icky swamp somewhere under this helix. By Vekoma standards this had an acceptable level of uncomfort. By comparing it to Rye Playland's Superflight, this was amazing! Yeah, Playland's Zamperla flyer sucked harder than most SLCs I've ridden. At least, till this day when SLC pain would be redefined. I will explain more later on. We got to the station, but it's down again. Heath Ledger - The ride? No, this came long before the good Joker. I can only imagine the headbanging if this thing still had OTSRs... Pasta bowl! Back to Superman. This picture will explain it all. Boring. Just boring. More of you Batwing. We then rode Penguin's Blizzard River. This was the most fun we had all day in the park. Random architecture in the Looney Tunes area. In this area, Great Chase was the only Zamperla kiddie coaster of the trip so far to leave me with bruises from that last brutal turn. What's this? Waterslides? Take a closer look. Um yeah, this is unacceptable to have in plain view right off the path. So for this year, SFA blocked off the entrance to these Hurricane Mountain body slides for their Tony Hawk Halfpipe slide. By doing this, these slides were left to rot away in clear view for everyone as the enter the park. It's really sad because these looked like quite fun. Now Six Flags, we all know how expensive it would have been to demolish these, but you didn't even bother to drain the damn water? Leftover water from last year turned into a breeding ground for mosquitos and looked scarier than the polluted water in the river in the town my parents live in back in California. For the GP to walk by and see this filth, really provides them with a negative impression of the park. Next time you close down a slide, remember to drain the water before next season Six Flags. C'mon! This brought pain to a new level for the Vekoma SLC. It was traumatizing. Roar was also awful on a level even more than comparing SLCs. Now for Vekomas, there is a common amount of pain to be expected. But for Roar, a GCI, this was just sad. Roar back home at SFDK is amazing and one of the smoothest woodies I have ridden. Millennium Flyers sure do make a difference. I beleved in this cosater and it let me down. Those PTCs destroyed the track and brought it down to a level of pain close to Mean Streak. More unacceptable views at a "family oriented" park. Not even any demolition work. It's really too bad that haunted house fire a few weeks earlier didn't spread to this coaster. *refrains from dirty joke* No seriously, this was just pathetic. Not much more happened until lunch when we decided to leave early. We had quite an entertaining bus ride to Williamsburg featuring Robb leading TPR trivia. I'm sure those on Lightning Bus will remember my dirty little stunt when I "stole" a certain girl's prize. I will leave it at that. She knows what I'm talking about. After we checked in to our hotel in Williamsburg, a group of us went to the local Chilis for dinner. It was nice to have a relaxing evening! While a massive group of TPR members went to Walmart, we had much more fun here at Chilis. Next up, well, do I even need to say?
R.C. Posted September 21, 2008 Posted September 21, 2008 It's too bad that SFA was as disappointing as it turned out to be... I find it interesting that most of SFA's coasters have DC comics themes. I wouldn;t mind going to SFA sometime just to see how bad a "bad Six Flags" park is like... Great pictures by the way! I'm looking forward to your Busch Gardens pictures!
mike541x Posted September 21, 2008 Posted September 21, 2008 I agree about those waterslides. They were pretty fun. And to leave it to rot in front of people is just plain dumb.
Goliath513 Posted November 9, 2008 Author Posted November 9, 2008 I know this took several months to get around to posting, but I've been really busy here at college. I just now had some downtime to put together this update. Day 6 - Busch Gardens Europe Anyways, here is our day at Busch Gardens - one of my nost anticipated days of the trip. This park was nothing less than great. Amazing atmosphere, great coasters, and fantastic food. After our less than satisfactory day at SFA before this was a great par to have to bounce back to! The atmosphere here was on par with Disney! Random theater building in the Ireland section of the park. Of course, this is what we are here for. ERT and filming session on Griffon! And on Alpengeist! This takes the place of Raptor as my new favorite invert! Twistyness! Sam approved (That's not hard to do since it's better than Mean Streak!) What we love most about Europe - BOOBS! With the park still not open to the public yet, we headed over to DarKastle for our behind-the-scenes tour! Car. Not much more to say. This tour could be considered "rubbish" by a certain Mr. Austin in this picture. (jk Mike ) Our tour guide explained all the scenes, effects, and technical specs of the ride! "People ask how much of an elevation change this ride covers. The truth is, it remains the same all the way through." This is why they call it Darkastle. If it was Cedar Fair, it would be called Dark Tunnel Ride. More cool effects! After the tour, we rode it. I have to say, having already walked the track of it, the ride was just that more exciting! Big Bad Wolf. The ride is known for it's drop and insane finale, but there's not much else to it. The beginning is pretty cool, but the stop and second lift kills the excitement. I can only imagine how epic this drop must have been during those first three weeks of operation before they added the trims! A park with only B&M and Arrow coasters is nothing but greatness! We also concluded that a park is not a park without a 3-point challenge attraction. Nessy was one of those surprises for me on the trip. I enjoyed it even more than Viper at SFMM! Wild life here too. This is starting to remind me of SFDK! Line jumpers (or people searching for PMW who make it out alive) will be fed to the wolves! For my first dive machine, I was quite impressed! Many in our group said Sheikra was better though. Yeah and apparently Montu is better than this too... R.I.P. Drachen Fire They didn't have a Joker faint option, so we decided to go with the dog for Tyler. The finished product. Maybe we should have done Roman Rapids BEFORE this. Boat credit. Almost Certainly a great addition for the park! Next, we (the Alveys, Brandon, Jahan, Tyler, Hanno, Dan, me, and some others) participated in a takeover of epic proportions of the lorikeet place! Some of the best memories from that day were made in there! ACEr bird! This is what they do to shiny things like phones! This is pretty much how it goes. You buy the nectar (or whatever it is), and the lorikeets drink from it. We had a hard time getting them to drink from ours. They must have been full. (This explains ACEr bird). No TPR lorikeet takeover would be complete without random acts being filmed by Robb. Robb was the first in our group to get the lorikeet diarrhea credit, but Tyler here got the full blast of it when he tried to kiss it. Taking a break from coasters and birds, game time! Poor frog.. Yeah this is good, but not Ninja good. We won monkeys from a game of skeeball. Emo Jahan in a tree. Treemo? The excitement continued well into the night. Followed by... ERT ON TEH BIG BAD WOLFZ!!!1!11one Once again. Amazing day at Busch Gardens, and I hope to come back to this park sometime soon! Next up: "We think we're better than Busch Gardens and Disney" Thanks for reading!
SFAfan#1 Posted November 9, 2008 Posted November 9, 2008 What?!?! You like Ninja better than Big Bad Wolf?!?! I like Ninja too but Big Bad Wolf dominates all Arrow swinging coasters. (or whatever they are called lol) And it seems like everytime somebody from TPR goes to SFA, the have a terrible time. But when I used to go all the time (before I started working there) I would always have a great time. It might be because since you guys have been to all these huge great parks like SFGADv, CP, SFMM, etc. you expect alot more from theme parks.
rollin_n_coastin Posted November 9, 2008 Posted November 9, 2008 Hey Sam, thanks for keeping up with the PTR! Great pics again! Cheers, J

It might be because since you guys have been to all these huge great parks like SFGADv, CP, SFMM, etc. you expect alot more from theme parks.Sorry but I cut parks a break... We had a very very poorly run day at Six Flags America and frankly I think the PR people that met with us knew it. I really wanted to love Six Flags America because they have an amazing collection of rides that should be good and the place looks pretty well kept. Sadly it just couldn't hold a candle to any expectation. We were practically ignored on a fair number of the rides. Several of the ops seemed to be having such a good time they hardly wanted to run the rides. The rides also just didn't run as nicely as similar rides we went on (although frankly I will say that Batwing was my favorite flyer of the trip). Ok, that's enough negativity... Sam the pictures are great again. That was a great day although I still think Griffon was seriously disappointing. Oh and please say that Frog was burned... I hate to think of how nasty that thing must have been.

Man, those employees need to get their priorities straight.

Man, those employees need to get their priorities straight. Yeah I wrote up a huge spiel on it and decided it was better not to post it. I also still remember the Blizzard River which had 5 people working it with 4 in the station chatting and not showing any indication that the ride was running until we left and one came out and asked if we wanted to ride. Then the guy at the top of the lift didn't even glance at us once... He was texting the whole time. Oh and remember the Superman ops that day were running one train and seemingly trying for the record for slowest dispatch ever (of course that was to be beaten soundly by Kings Dominion with Grizzly...) This is now just a really funny memory... At the time it was truly grating and really irked me.
R.C. Posted November 11, 2008 Posted November 11, 2008 Great update, Sam. I've been looking forward to seeing your pictures from Busch Gardens! It's another one of those parks that I really want to go to.
thrillgeek Posted November 12, 2008 Posted November 12, 2008 Same with me R.C. Great photos as usual Sam! Haha maybe next year I can convince my parents to go here with me to BGE. In exchange I could go with my dad to all of the historic sites in Virginia
Goliath513 Posted December 17, 2008 Author Posted December 17, 2008 Day 7 - Kings Dominion This is one of those parks that I don't have much to say about it. Either college has taken its toll on my brain, there was not much really memorable about the park, or riding 3 Vekomas after the trip gave me brain damage. Probably a combination of all because I remember we were (for the most part) really let down. When putting this together, I realized how few photos I actually took each day. Just a bunch of the main ride(s) and not much else. Kings Dominion is a good example of this, as you will see. Son of Parking Lot Coaster. The entrance area reminded me of CGA, but with more trees. Off to our morning ERT! Hearing nothing but great things about this ride from when it was at Geauga Lake, I expected nothing less. Sadly, I was let down. Medusa at SFDK has spoiled floorless coasters for me I guess. After about 3 rides, I called it quits and decided to get some pictures instead. Jahan being taken down by Kristen! "Being the tallest loop, we wanted to show it off by painting it a different color than the rest of the ride" Smooth, fast, forceful, but just didn't flow. Am I the only one who thinks the transitions on the corkscrews do not flow very well? Unlike Six Flags, Cedar Fair took the effort to tear up the parking underneath Parking Lot: The Ride. This makes up for the operations during our visit. Next up - Volcano The Blast Coaster! I regret skipping this. However, we had to struggle to get our credits as it was. Maybe I will come back someday after they get their B&M hyper... Fun coaster, but padded seats like on newer impulse coasters would help A LOT! Just as the ride starts getting good, it's over. Time for descriptive name coaster without effects turned on, or whatever Cedar Fair called it. It wouldn't be a Cedar Fair trip report without pictures of concrete or trash cans. Hypersonic support's role will be played by Jahan! It's been over 10 years since I've ridden a Togo death machine. Shockwave was out of service during our visit. Park management did not know why. Nor could they explain why Drop Tower was running at 1/4 capacity. Missed credit due to closure #1. Another ride I was really looking forward to - disappointing. Death to trim breaks! Long lines + slow operations = Epic Fail No flash photograph allowed in the station, so this is the crappy shot I got. Why do Jahan and WANK seem so interested in Tyler's ass?!? Avalanche won the Fail Award for excessive trim break use. So sad. I actually enjoyed Cedar Point's Disaster Transport much more than this. Hey Elissa! Dominator from the group picnic area. This means it's time for lunch and... Q & A with Management! I will sum up the memorable parts in a few memorable quotes, and let you decide what to think. "We think we're better than Disney and Busch" "People don't ride rides for their name." (When asked about the naming of Drop Tower) "It's unfair to other guests that people can pay to skip the lines." (When asked why there is no queue bypass system) Following the Q & A, management proceeded to give us "exit passes" so we could skip the lines. My group (Robb, Tyler, Jahan, Brandon, and I forget who else was with us) headed over to Grizzly to use ours. When we walked up the exit, the operator had never seen these "exit passes" before. However, he let us on. It still took an unacceptable amount of time to get through. One train operation, 7 minute dispatch times, and angry guests in line were just a few of the problems. After our spine smashing ride on Grizzly, we headed over to Hurler, which was even worse. I sat next to Robb on Hurler, which I realized I should have sat on the other side of him when the train came to the turn at the bottom of the first drop. Ouch! Also, putting a giant "renew your season pass" sign over the station for riders to view after a terrible ride, is not such a good idea. Who would want to come back after riding Hurler? Not me! Maybe this is why I didn't take many more pictures during the day - I was recovering from the pain. Drop Tower. Who the fuck names a ride Drop Tower?!? Why? I got a picture of Ricochet, but none of Anaconda. This wasn't all that good either. Rebel Yell offered some good airtime to make up for the slight pain. Definitely better than the park's other woodies. Since we didn't have ant children to ride Taxi Jam with, we did our credit whoring on Scooby-Doo's Ghoster Coaster instead. I will end the update with this picture of Tyler, Brandon, and Jahan! Next up - Morey's Piers
