First off - stop arguing.

Secondly, I'd just like to say how embarassing the American news is, at least here in L.A.

They have spent most of the morning discussing how security is 'beefed up' at Union Station, bus terminals, gas stations, pizza huts, etc....

What about what's going on where the bombs actually happened????

I'm in London right now. Luckly my family and I wern't on the Underground at that time. We were having breakfast at a B&B near Hyde Park at the time. We were originally going to stay at a B&B near Russel Sq. (one of the stations attacked).

About security, their was hardly any at any of the Underground stations I've been to. It would have been very easy for a terrorist to bring a bomb on board.

As I have worked in & around most of the north London railway terminals since 1988, Kings Cross, Euston, Liverpool Street & Paddington. I have (This is not a thing I am proud to say) got used to bomb scares. Yes the IRA did a lot of this, but at lest most of the time, NOT all of the time they phoned in a warning before it went off. This is what makes the new threat more troublesome and very hard to stop. The IRA did bomb a lot of railway stations. Victoria being a bad one, Left in a rubbish bin (That is why most railway station do not have them anymore). I went to work today as lot of people did, Or though the train I did to London had only 6 people in the carriage, when it is normally full & standing. I got to work not on time and had to walk from Kings Cross to Paddington passing what is left of the Bus & the closed Edgware Road station. Most people just getting on with there lives. I know it must sound a bit callous saying that I am sorry if it does. But life must go on & while we do that we must remember the people that have lost love ones in all places that have had these attacks. Lets not argue as that is playing in to the hands of the terrorists, Divide & conquer is one of there games.

Well sorry for getting a bit worked up. things are tense here. I know us Brits and Americans have always been "Brothers In Arms" through out history. well apart from when you kicked us out of America.

Things are indeed very tense in London.

There has been a lot of security (Community support Officers & British Transport Police & Police) on most of the Underground station I have been using for a long time now.

Security is alot better than the railways here in the US, the news was saying that there are tons of video camera's and either police or guards, it was carefully planned

the scary thing is no one in the intelligence agencies heard anything, flew completly under the radar, its really sad

I agree with Robb, I watched for a good part of the day, and the news was talking about New York and L.A., who gives a F***, I want to see what is going on the city that was attacked, that would be better, much better than seeing some moron politician tell me from L.A. as they carried his "news confrence" live, not to panic, F*** you

i was really worried. my sister was in London for a month on a Mission Trip to "missionize" or evangelize to the many Muslims and other non-christians there (my family is quaker! otherwise known as friends (http://www.lbfc.org) i love it there). I was sleeping when my brother called my cell phone to tell me to email my sister (am the computer savvy one in the family and my brother lives somewhere else in the world). I still had little idea of what was going on and I saw on TV (at 4 AM) that 2 people were confirmed dead (wonderful news -- sarcasm, fyi) and power surges and bombs and what not. Although, i was at hopes for London that the dead toll would stay at two.. and it slowly climbed up from there, i was really worried about my sister, the tube and the buses we're the only bits of transportation her bank account had access to, and it was her day off of the whole week. well, shes okay, and yet, am still a bit thrown off of my usual cycle. summer = sleep, and bore from summer homework mucho somniferous. (that's what i get from going into a college-prepatory magnet program thing of extra curricular experiences)... yep. so exciting, riveting, i might say.

just a side thought:

When the US started its: War on Terrorism, they went directly toward the middle east terrorist. Is this correct? We did this to rid the world of terrorists. Well, at least in England, isn't the IRA considered terrorists? and isn't England part of the world?

just an observation.

IRA is a terrorist group, but I really don't know how active they still are, I have to claim ignorance

^ Yeah, I need to claim ignorance on that one too.

Not too sure of how "Active" the IRA is. Haven't heard anything about them for awhil. Then again, the News here is all a bout the "US" with only an "Around the world in 60 seconds" every so often. So the chances of us hearing about an IRA incident is slim to none.

I will repeat what I said earlier, the coverage on this thing, especially where the US media is concerned really blows. They were doing a great job in the first few hours of the attacks, I will give them that. But, after awhile it came about "US", which is wrong.

Maybe one of our UK posters can give a little more information on the IRA's recent activity, and if they are saying if it's possibly they were involved.

It's kinda sad that most news I am getting about this is coming from TPR.

Yup its sad, When I first heard about it I was at work, so I got home about 10:30 am, mountain time, and the news was all about New York and L.A. already, with a few minutes an hour with ONE reporter standing near the scene, with no interviews, and just reporting the same crap over and over

A claim for the attacks has been made in the name of Al-Qaeda by a group calling itself The Abu Hafs Al-Masri Brigade, according to the BBC in the UK.

But everyone is urging caution over the credibility of that claim, as no-one knows for sure.

As for the Provisional Irish Republican Army (PIRA), their last major attack was in London Docklands in 1996, where two people died but massive damage was caused. As far as I know they are currently in a ceasefire and hopefully it will stay that way!

The best place to find out more is the BBC's website.

The IRA is now involved in the political processes in Northern Ireland and has called a ceasefire. Its part of the Good Friday agreement of 1998-99. Here is a link to it. Hope this helps

I'm currently chatting with a friend in Southport and he just told me that they had another terror alert last night because several suspect packages were found and 20,000 people were evacuated from Birmingham which is the 2nd largest city. Thankfully the packages turned out to be false alarms.
