Loefet Posted September 28, 2007 Posted September 28, 2007 Good news everyone. Just came back from a short trip to Liseberg, and I just have to say that the rides on Balder was much better then the ones after they replaced the wheels this summer, even if it was just 10°C (50F). The first ride of tonight were slow due to the cold, the train just dragged along the turns, but as the ride got warmed up it also speed up and the last rides were pretty good (but not as good as a warm summer day). So the mediocre rides of Balder is no more, and next summer the rides will be as good as ever. Anyway this was a perfect day to visit Liseberg, 00 minutes queue for everything.
robbalvey Posted September 28, 2007 Posted September 28, 2007 Good to hear that Balder is running better again. The bad news is going to be that all those people on the ECC scandi trip that rode it who got the mediocre rides will probably rank it in Mitch's poll based on those rides while will only cause it to fall more in the wood coaster rankings. Oh, well....there's always El Toro! --Robb
Meteornotes Posted September 28, 2007 Posted September 28, 2007 This is awesome news. I miss Liseberg. dt

I can pick that without a popularity vote or mass consensus. And you know what? If some random enthusiast from France thinks Balder sucks, that's one less person waiting in front of you when you go to ride it. Plus, if it's running better, that makes it even sweeter that the lines are (even a tiny bit) shorter. Yay for it running better though, there are plenty of coasters that could use that...

Yeah, agreed, I don't need a poll to tell me that either, but I wasn't speaking about how it would affect anyone personally, it was more how it would affect the park. For example, a park like Holiday World or Great Adventure gets quite a bit of attention even without their woodies being high ranking in a poll, but a park like Liseberg can really benefit from it. That's all I was saying. You can go calm down now. --Robb

Obviously I'm the final authority on what I like, but it doesn't hurt to see what's popular among other enthusiasts. And top rated coasters are usually going to be better than lower rated ones, unless you have bizarre taste. While I seldom agree with the exact ranking, I do generally agree with the range that a coaster is in (top 20, middle, bottom, etc).

I realize that they get attention too, it's just I don't think that Balder being #3 instead of #1 will make too much of a difference. If you're an enthusiast and you want to go ride Balder, you're going to do it because you know it's a good ride thanks to a lot of other enthusiasts' positive feedback. Personally, I would love to take a trip to Scandinavia, not just for coasters, but as a leisure trip. Balder being #3 or even #20 instead of number #1 wouldn't change my plans to go to Liseberg, because I've heard about how great it is.
Real Posted October 1, 2007 Posted October 1, 2007 I thought one of the rules of a good ride is how well it delivers under all conditions. New wheels, old wheels, morning, afternoon, night - etc.

New wheels, old wheels, morning, afternoon, night - etc. So what you're saying is that all rides should be able to preform just fine if you put styrofoam wheels on it? They tried out a new wheel made from different material. It either didn't work out or took more time to "break in." Why is that a problem? I think you need to set some realistic expectations when making a judgement..... --Robb
Nrthwnd Posted October 1, 2007 Posted October 1, 2007 I miss Balder. And Liseberg. Hope you remembered us all from last year, Peter.
thrillerman1 Posted October 2, 2007 Posted October 2, 2007 Hey Peter...it was great fun hanging out with you in Japan! Thanks for the update on Balder. Oh and how's that g-force belt thingy working out? Did you get the stats downloaded/sorted out yet?
