PhishyBrewer Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 I just listened to a story about Barbaro this morning on NPR. They said they had high hopes even after another injury this week. Well... I guess preschoolers while be tasting the glue of champions. Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro was euthanized Monday after complications from his gruesome breakdown at last year's Preakness, ending an eight-month ordeal that prompted an outpouring of support across the country. Scaparri Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 I guess preschoolers while be tasting the glue of champions. You crossed THAT line and I still can't help but laugh. It really is rather sad though. I was a bit stunned to see it when I went for my regular visit to espn.com. The Triple Crown races are the only horse races I pay any attention to. I hope to one day make it down to the Derby. Its just a shame when things like this happen though.
crazyrider06 Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 Even though i never really followed the kentucky Derby or anything like that, i know he was a great racer and it's sad to see him go
ginzo Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 Although I'm not personally a fan of horses (one stepped on my foot once), this is pretty sad. That horse was only 4 years old, and was a born champion. His owners were spending tens if not hundreds of thousands of dollars to try to save him, even though he had no chance of ever racing again. Horses are an odd species, because 5,000 years ago they were much shorter. Humans selectively bred them into the tall beasts they are today, and as a result their legs are very fragile.
lapseofreason Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 It sucks that he died, but it must be nice to spend tens of thousands of dollars keeping a horse alive.
Masked_Maverick Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 ^ Hey they should be making that money back in glue sales alone.
Ed Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 LOL They kept a horse alive for that long? How stupid.
verticalzero Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 I don't mind horses (I don't trust them) and it is sad when one has to be put down, I can't watch a horse race incase it miss-judges the fence, falls and lands on it's head. Why count the cost of the operations when the house can have a full life "retired" early. It's like killing a human who has broken their leg / arm. A waste of life

LOL They kept a horse alive for that long? How stupid. Yes, but they do it so they can make tens of thousands of dollars letting that horse (had it survived) make babies with any other horse. -Scott "If you're a successful race horse that lives through your short career, life is oh so sweet" Parrish
mr_teisco_delrey Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 Yes, but they do it so they can make tens of thousands of dollars letting that horse (had it survived) make babies with any other horse. Make that MILLIONS of dollars. Barbaro was a very fast horse. Also remember thoroughbreds cannot be artificially inseminated. That is why the owners were trying to heal the hind legs.
Ccron10 Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 The reason why he died was that the leg got infected and he acted differently. Here's a little fact: The horse's owner went to the same school I am going to now. There hasn't been that much talk in school about Barbaro's death execpt in my Business class. R.I.P. Barbaro -Chris
