canada Posted July 14, 2006 Posted July 14, 2006 Am I required to have passports with me while traveling to the USA by car?
ParkTrips Posted July 14, 2006 Posted July 14, 2006 Not until 2008. Starting Jan 1, air and sea travel between the US and Canada/Mexico will require a passport. Auto traffic will wait another year. I just read an article regarding that today...
methylene Posted July 14, 2006 Posted July 14, 2006 ^ What he said. Keep in mind that a passport will make things easier for you in general. We didn't need a passport to go to Mexico last year but having one saved us time at customs. Matt
Carnage Posted July 14, 2006 Posted July 14, 2006 Currently if you don't have a passport you need a birth certificate and photo ID.
canada Posted July 14, 2006 Author Posted July 14, 2006 Are you guys positive about this? I'd really hate if I went and they didnt let me through.
canada Posted July 14, 2006 Author Posted July 14, 2006 then take a passport Gee thanks that's really helpful.
goleafsgo Posted July 14, 2006 Posted July 14, 2006 well if your not sure, take one, and if you dont have one, get one...
coaster1 Posted July 14, 2006 Posted July 14, 2006 I got through US and Canada with just my DL in May .. they ask for a Birth Certificate sometimes, but wasn't a problem for me.
shesaidboom Posted July 14, 2006 Posted July 14, 2006 It's very unlikely that they wont let you through if you don't have a passport, especially since they say all you need right now to cross is a birth certificate and photo ID, but it is much easier to have one. It's also not a huge hassle to get one, so if you're really worried I'd say just get one. Also, if you're under 18 [you don't have your age listed so ignore this if you're not] and aren't travelling with your parents I'm pretty sure you need a note from your parents permitting you to travel with whomever you're going with. I've heard of people getting turned away from the border because of this.
Vekoma Fan Boy Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 I'll ask my cousin she traveled form here to Florida once via plane. All by herself and she is 9.
CoasterFanatic Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 License is fine, but I would bring the Birth Certificate for good measure.
the sound Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 I'll ask my cousin she traveled form here to Florida once via plane. All by herself and she is 9. I don't know what that will do, because she left from a place in America, i think there talking about International, were you need a passport. Domestic travel doesn't require a passport.
CoasterFanatic Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 Seriously, you should probably listen to Carnage's take on this. He travels outside of Canada pretty frequently. I think he would know.
Carnage Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 Yes listen to me. Vekoma Fan Boy: 1) We're talking about Canada->USA, and 2) We're talking about driving not flying. The rules for flying can be more strict(though I think even still a passport is not required for Canada/USA). You should be fine with a birth certificate and photo ID. But getting a passport would be a good idea, as you will get less hassle if you have one. Customs officers are hard to judge. If you get one on a bad day they can and will make your life a living hell. So the more you have the better(passport, notes if you're underage, etc)
pvcoasterguy Posted July 20, 2006 Posted July 20, 2006 Just wanted to chime in on this. Using your passport for your ID at an airport (whether travelling domestically or internationally) saves significant time. Why? Because passports are not easy to duplicate or get fake ones of and all US passports are the same. While the TSA people may stare at your ID (driver's liscence, etc.) for awhile, they basically just glance at your passport.
