Not until 2008.

Starting Jan 1, air and sea travel between the US and Canada/Mexico will require a passport. Auto traffic will wait another year. I just read an article regarding that today...

^ What he said.

Keep in mind that a passport will make things easier for you in general. We didn't need a passport to go to Mexico last year but having one saved us time at customs.

It's very unlikely that they wont let you through if you don't have a passport, especially since they say all you need right now to cross is a birth certificate and photo ID, but it is much easier to have one. It's also not a huge hassle to get one, so if you're really worried I'd say just get one. Also, if you're under 18 [you don't have your age listed so ignore this if you're not] and aren't travelling with your parents I'm pretty sure you need a note from your parents permitting you to travel with whomever you're going with. I've heard of people getting turned away from the border because of this.

I'll ask my cousin she traveled form here to Florida once via plane. All by herself and she is 9.

I don't know what that will do, because she left from a place in America, i think there talking about International, were you need a passport.

Domestic travel doesn't require a passport.

Yes listen to me.

Vekoma Fan Boy: 1) We're talking about Canada->USA, and 2) We're talking about driving not flying. The rules for flying can be more strict(though I think even still a passport is not required for Canada/USA).

You should be fine with a birth certificate and photo ID.

But getting a passport would be a good idea, as you will get less hassle if you have one.

Customs officers are hard to judge. If you get one on a bad day they can and will make your life a living hell. So the more you have the better(passport, notes if you're underage, etc)

Just wanted to chime in on this.

Using your passport for your ID at an airport (whether travelling domestically or internationally) saves significant time. Why? Because passports are not easy to duplicate or get fake ones of and all US passports are the same. While the TSA people may stare at your ID (driver's liscence, etc.) for awhile, they basically just glance at your passport.
