dragoncoaster1292 Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 I'm not sure if this is breaking some sort of taboo (and if it is, lock this right away and erase my memory if anybody posts!), but how do you steer the flyers, such as the ones at Knoebels, to make them go insane, like cable-snapping, ride-breaking crazy? Thanks in advance for responding! EDIT: Name changed because the current name, I believe, is more important.
Erik Johnson Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 No, this question is just fine. Its kinda hard to explain. The trick is not to move the sail back and forth super fast. You have to get into a rhythm of moving the sail back and forth. As the ride first starts you start by moving the sail all the way to the outer side so you start to gain altitude. (handle pointing to the outside while the sail is pointing towards the ground side.) Once it starts to gain some speed start moving the sail all the way to the other side so you lower you altitude to the bottom. You start to develope a rhythm as you continue to move the sail from side to side. After a few cycles around the ride you will start to shake the tub a bit as the cables start to slack and snap. After another cycle or so the full snapping-fun begins, make sure you are prepared for it though because it can catch you off guard. This is what works for me. The ones at Knoebels are great!!! Very easy to snap.
dragoncoaster1292 Posted July 12, 2006 Author Posted July 12, 2006 Woah! Awesome! Kinda confusing, but awesome! I'll have to analyze some Flyer pics to really understand this, but thanks for the info. EDIT: So let me get this straight, when the ride first begins, move the sail away from the ride, and when you get higher up, move it to the other side at a medium pace, and keep doing that at a steady rhythm until your flyer gets flung off the ride and onto the Phoenix track. Correct if I'm wrong. Thanks!

Correct if I'm wrong. Thanks! Yeah pretty much, just make sure you, in a steady pace, keep going as high and low as you can. Do not stay at mid level. You might end up on Twister though, its closer to the Flyers than Phoenix. I wish I had some decent video footage of snapping, it seems all the footage I have are from people who did not know how to do it, and I did not get any POV flyer footage.
easytoremember Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 How are the flyers at Holiday world? I heard they were not that good. Also, what makes flyers good or bad?
DerekRx Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 Actually this may BE taboo, especially if the ride insurers read the forum. I know Knoebels management severely looked down on it way back in the late 1990s when someone posted the many techniques of snappage over on RRC. Shortly thereafter the signs and getting booted from the ride came about.
Erik Johnson Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 Oops, I had no idea....I guess I am still a bit of a newbie.
goleafsgo Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 could someone post a pic of a flyer, i have no idea what that is...
SharkTums Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 Erik, It's cool, we know you're a good guy. We just don't want people to go out and try to break the ride. Have fun with the flyers, but don't try to hurt the nice ride!
goleafsgo Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 i see... snapping the cables on that thing must not be good for you.
Erik Johnson Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 Carowinds Flyers! For me these are...and I hope still...my #2 Flyers after Knoebels.
jamesdillaman Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 Most flyers are anchored by more than one cable (usually 4 with safety loops of steel cable around each pair), so even if one did break, the tub would only sit a little lower. "Snapping" the cables actually only refers to them getting slack and then taunt, quickly launching the tub high in the air, and making a loud "snapping" sound. When I ran the ride at PKI (now gone to Carowinds ) we were told that it's normal operation for the ride and really no danger if the ride is inspected daily. The main problem is parents viewing people doing it on what they mistakingly refer to as a "kiddie ride" and getting upset when their kid comes off crying. That's the reason many parks post signs as to "no snapping of cables allowed." It's not as much that it isn't safe as it appears unsafe. -James Dillaman btw, just saw your post of MY flyers.... You uncaring bastard....
easytoremember Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 No one has answered my question about the Holiday world flyers. Good... or not so good.
jamesdillaman Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 not so good because they are small and lightweight, but they are much like the Indiana Beach flyers, they can be snapped, but the park doesn't condone it. -James Dillaman
Erik Johnson Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 No one has answered my question about the Holiday world flyers. Good... or not so good. No idea, never been to Holiday World.
jamesdillaman Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 They didn't kick me out, just nicely told me not to make them snap. The ride op stopped the ride before I could get any big snaps in anyway, which I expect they do for anyone who tries. Just do your thing, and if you can, you can. If they tell you to stop, or there's a sign explicitly telling you not to, then obey the park rules of course.
ParkTrips Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 No one has answered my question about the Holiday world flyers. Good... or not so good. I vote lame.
BeemerBoy Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 Actually this may BE taboo, especially if the ride insurers read the forum. I know Knoebels management severely looked down on it way back in the late 1990s when someone posted the many techniques of snappage over on RRC. Shortly thereafter the signs and getting booted from the ride came about. Two pages later......did anyone actually read this? I've got a great idea...why don't we just print this thread and mail it to Knoebels and Carowinds. Of course this may have no bearing whatsoever on flyer operations in the future, but I'm with Derek on this one.....can't we all just stay a little hush hush about something so valued to many enthusiasts? Scott "am I wrong?" B.
jamesdillaman Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 Um.... Yeah^ That's why nobody else posted techniques of how to do it. Read the entire quote. It moved on to include questions of safety and pictures of flyers and park rules. Different than telling people how to do it. I do agree, though. I would hate to see this go away.... I love me some flyer snaps... -James Dillaman
ParkTrips Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 I see no problem since the ride is capable of taking the "beating".
BeemerBoy Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 ^^ Okay, maybe it's just late and I read it all wrong. i did ask if I was wrong afterall.
Jumboshrmp Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 I think I remember seeing someone on this ride, and it hit the ground?
