Last week I had the opportunity to attend an annual passholder preview of the Jurassic World VelociCoaster at Universal's Islands of Adventure... I'll start the report by simply saying this thing is AWESOME! The VelociCoaster is designed with a fun first half that weaves in and out of itself after the first launch before throwing you into a much more intense second half. The drop coming off of the top hat gives some insane airtime and the inverted stall is such a neat maneuver. The final roll over the water is also intense and flips you only a few feet above the lagoon. All of this said, the coaster flies over and around the guest paths and viewing areas without nets, which makes these flyovers even more exciting--this is accomplished by requiring all riders to put their belongs (save for their park tickets/annual passes) in the lockers in the queue so nothing is dropped below. The lockers are double sided, so you load them in the queue and you access the other side and open the locker in the exit flow. The queue for the coaster is very cleverly designed, wrapping around the ride in key areas and setting the story of a rollercoaster in the raptor paddock being the newest attraction in Jurassic World, the still-open dinosaur park on Isla Nublar. The coaster sits inside of the Jurassic Park island with some of the land's design elements matching Jurassic World's aesthetic while others still tie into the Jurassic Park's styling. Let's take a look around... This view greets you as you enter the park... The top hat's wide curve is deceiving--that drop feels way more steep than it looks. There are many spots outside of Jurassic Park where the coaster can be seen running. Hello beastie! According to one of the creative team for the project (on Twitter), these raptors facing off against each other is a not to the former entrance sculpture that was once at Dueling Dragons. Outward banked airtime! Hangtime! Such a great dive! I really do love that there are no nets beneath the coaster. The plaza is full of kinetic energy. No nets! In case you were wondering where the entrance is in relation to the Jurassic Park Discovery Center. Dive! Dive! Dive! So great! Looks so great! The entrance of the queue is covered but not fully enclosed. Despite this, giant fans help to keep the space well cooled. This queue space is absolutely filled with dynamic lighting. There's definitely nods to different elements of the franchise's iconography throughout the queue. Very cool. Hard to photograph, but Robb & Elissa's video shows the effect really well. The raptors chase after the trains as they go through their second launch. BD Wong's Dr. Henry Wu makes an appearance for several videos in the queue. I can't say I expected animatronics to be featured in the queue... Clever girl! I love that they brought Mr. DNA into the queue loops! A look at the double-sided lockers. inGen gets a nod in the exit of the attraction. There is a separate location for single riders to use lockers. A pop-up VelociCoaster Store has been set up at the ground floor of the Jurassic Park Discovery Center, which double's as the exit path for the VelociCoaster. Merch, merch, merch. Walking around Jurassic Park, you can get some more fun views of the coaster in motion. My favorite photo spot because you can see the train move through a ton of different portions of the first half of the coaster. Here is the first launch... Going up... Going down... Heading into the second launch... In the back row you get a bit of hangtime as you move through this element. Hairtime! Prepare to be launched! VelociCoaster is a great addition to the Universal Orlando Resort and a fantastic addition to Central Florida's world-class collection of coasters!

Kennywood (KW) Discussion Thread

Yeah, I’ve found references to 2019 pricing… I was looking at the standard (non-unlimited) option that looked closer to $50 but I’ve found mixed references to it having assigned times for each ride. We’re stopping at Kennywood (for our first time) for 4-6 hours before driving to Hershey, so I’m just trying to figure out an economical way to experience the best of in the park that works for our schedule. -

I’m hopeful that they take the next month and get things under control… I’m visiting for the first time next month and it would be a bummer to have so many of the big coasters down. They’ve yet to update their site with VIP Coaster Tour options and pricing for this year… Other than finding references to previous years, I can’t get any valuable details that explain what their fast lane/quick queue equivalent is or how it works. -
US Thrillrides LLC has announced a new thrill concept called the Skyscreamer, a sister attraction to the classic SkyCoaster ride. https://www.usthrillrides.com/skyscreamer INTRODUCING THE EVOLUTION OF A LEGEND The Skycoaster was one of our founder, Bill Kitchen's first mega-hit inventions. After 20+ years of success you can find over 200 still in operation around the world with an impeccable safety record. Now, US ThrillRides is introducing version 2.0: the Skyscreamer, which takes everything great about original and amps it up several levels while simplifying and streamlining operation. A win with customers and a win for venue owners means the Skyscreamer is set to break every record set by its predecessor! Skyscreamer amplifies the thrills by seating 6-24 riders side-by-side on a circular platform before raising them off the ground and then building the tension by reeling them hundreds of feet in the air. After a few moments of anticipation, the ripcord releases and sends patrons into a momentary free fall before the swing motion catches them and sends them soaring over the enthralled onlookers. A patented pendulum damper then gently and effectively reduces the swing arc, bringing the breathless riders to a stop before lowering them to earth - no doubt raving about the rush and ready to go another round! SPECIFICATIONS Core Stats: Height 200 - 350 Feet Riders 6 - 24 (Configurable) Ride Duration: 4 minutes Capacity 81 - 324+ People per hour Three-tower design wrapped in ETFE for a striking and cost-effective design US and Foreign Patents Granted https://www.bizjournals.com/orlando/news/2021/04/22/skycoaster-inventor-bill-kitchen.html?ana=twt Orlando ride inventor Bill Kitchen, who invented the SkyCoaster ride seen around Central Florida and beyond, has a new tall thrill ride on the way. Windermere-based US Thrillrides LLC, which was founded by Kitchen, unveiled the Skyscreamer, a sister attraction to the SkyCoaster that can accommodate more guests than the typical three riders of its predecessor. The ride, which can range from 200-350 feet in height, can accommodate up to 24 riders — or more than 324 people per hour — and generate an estimated $2.2 million in gross revenue for an operator, based on a roughly $10 per rider cost, according to the company's website. Here's more from the company's website: Skyscreamer amplifies the thrills by seating 6-24 riders side-by-side on a circular platform before raising them off the ground and then building the tension by reeling them hundreds of feet in the air. After a few moments of anticipation, the ripcord releases and sends patrons into a momentary free fall before the swing motion catches them and sends them soaring over the enthralled onlookers. As the attraction free-falls, it will rotate to add to the thrill sensation for riders. It has a "pendulum damper" that helps the swinging ride gradually decrease in momentum until it comes to a stop, which eliminates riders needing to grab a self-stopping device often seen installed on existing SkyCoasters. The cost of the ride varies based on the height and size of the ride platform, Kitchen told Orlando Business Journal. For example, he said a 200-foot version costs about $1.8 million for a 6-person ride system; while the 35-foot versions can be upward of $4 million with a 12-person saucer. In addition, the ride has already grabbed some attention, from "several interested parties out of state — amusement parks and mega-malls," he told OBJ. That includes a potential first installment somewhere in Orlando, but no specific location was provided. New rides like these can help bolster the appeal at amusement parks or other entertainment outlets. In fact, that may help as the overall industry seeks to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic that ravaged business. The overall U.S. amusement parks industry market value dropped to $71.6 billion in 2020, compared to $73.5 billion in 2019, according to Statista.com. That decrease was "mainly due to the economic slowdown across countries owing to the coronavirus pandemic and the measures to contain it," said the site. However, it added that the industry should see a resurgence to beyond $89.5 billion by 2023.

NTAG was the abbreviation many used for New Texas Giant (not sure where the A comes from) but yeah. Bottom line is, manufacturers and parks that get into these kind of nasty legal disputes don’t often shack back up with new projects unless there’s some kind of reconciliation. Gerstlauer was not involved in any of Six Flags (or any other) RMC conversions after this incident.

Just a few months after our strawberry picking adventure at Southern Hill Farms, we found that it was time to come back for a new crop, this time fresh blueberries to be picked! Once again we trekked out to Clermont and found ourselves with walking the fields to pick the best looking produce fresh from the farm. Thanks to the sheer volume of the blueberry plants, the mad rush of the morning wasn't nearly as crazy and even by mid-day as we left, there was still plenty of fruit ready to pick. The beauty of this crop is that with so many at various stages of growth, it was clear that in just a week or two, there would be more blueberries to replace those picked during the day we visited. Southern Hill Farms was also hosting sunflower picking like before, along with tractor rides, a small child's play area with rides, slides and those awesome bounce pads. The food and beverage options from our prior visit were all available again but with expanded options thanks to the addition of several more food trucks and vendors. Southern Hill Farms continues to be a really neat local experience for Central Florida, and a tasty one at that! Peach season starts soon so we'll definitely be back for more in the coming weeks! And we're back! Love it! Freshly cleaned buckets are your tool to collect all of the blueberries you'll find in the fields. Tractor rides are available at an additional cost for those that don't want to walk to the far end of the property (or just want to enjoy the ride experience). We opted to take the walk given how beautiful of a day it was. You start out with just a few in your bin but before you know it... You've done some serious damage! You have to spot the deep blues and purples to know which ones to pick, but with so many light greens and pinks being grown, there'll be plenty more to grab in the weeks ahead. Two bins later and we ended up with 4 lbs of blueberries. It cost about $18 for everything we picked! After you're done picking you can enjoy some of the other offerings the grounds have to offer. Can't forget about The Beer Shed. Lots of new food truck options this time around! Just a few months ago these were the strawberry fields we picked from... We can't wait to get more strawberries during their next season here. Some shading has been put up over the bounce pads! Rides and slides for the little ones... This generator-powered chair swing is here too! A sneak peek at peach season, coming to Southern Hill Farms in just a few weeks! -

After more than a year of closure, Universal Studios Hollywood is ready for its close-up and set to call “action” on the all-new “The Secret Life of Pets: Off the Leash!” and “Jurassic World—The Ride,” which features the spectacularly realistic new dinosaur, Indominus rex. Here’s what guests can expect: A stroll along the cleverly themed Pets Place will bring guests to the front of Katie’s NYC apartment building where the innovative “The Secret Life of Pets: Off the Leash!” ride resides. This all-new tech-savvy adventure inspired by Illumination’s blockbuster The Secret Life of Pets films, answers the question, “What are your pets really doing when you’re not at home?” This impressive new ride combines 64 technologically-advanced animated figures with hyper-realistic media and projection mapping designed to take guests on a journey to meet some of their favorite Illumination characters from the movies, including Max, Snowball, Gidget, Chloe and Duke, along with a host of other animal friends, who have all been transformed and transported into the live-action world. From blinking eyes to eyebrow movements, from head tilts to head nods, from moving mouths to smiles, from ear curls to lip curls, from full torso twists to physically walking, the depth of mobility and function programmed within each of these loveable characters creates an experience unlike any other theme park ride. The grand reopening of Universal Studios Hollywood also brings guests face-to-face with “Jurassic World—The Ride’s” all-new, extraordinarily realistic dinosaur, the Indominus rex, who stakes her claim at the ride’s finale in a forceful battle with her arch-rival, the Tyrannosaurus rex. Breaking new ground with highly complex innovations, this fully-articulated lifelike Indominus injects intense new thrills, excitement and intrigue to the already dynamic ride. Spanning nearly 55 feet horizontally from head to tail and over 22 feet vertically, the Indominus’ imposing presence will be amplified by the fluidity of her motions and synchronized movements that deliver an unprecedented level of authenticity. From the subtle blinking of her eyes, the flexing of her arms and claws and clenching of her jaw as she bears her razor-sharp teeth, the colossal Indominus rex will lunge from her hillside setting, stalking guests just before they descend the giant waterfall drop to escape her grasp. Of course, these new experiences are among the many welcoming attractions and themed environments that await guests upon their return to Universal Studios Hollywood, including “The Wizarding World of Harry Potter™” which features a bustling Hogsmeade village and the critically-acclaimed rides, “Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey™” and “Flight of the Hippogriff™”, “Transformers™: The Ride-3D,” “Revenge of the Mummy: The Ride,” Despicable Me’s “Super Silly Fun Land,” and “Springfield, U.S.A.,” home of America’s favorite animated family, “The Simpsons.” The theme park’s signature attraction and world-renowned Studio Tour, which takes guests behind-the-scenes of an authentic production movie and television studio and where they can experience such thrill rides as “Fast & Furious—Supercharged” and “King Kong 360 3D,” will also open. Because the safety and well-being of guests and team members is a top priority for Universal Studios Hollywood, the following guidelines outline the theme park’s new health and safety protocols, also highlighted in this video and detailed on the Universal Studios Hollywood website. Clementon Park Discussion Thread
jedimaster1227 replied to larrygator's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Some more details on the surprising winning bidder for Clementon Park and Splash World.... The owners of Indiana Beach Amusement Park have bought Clementon Park with the intent to reopen later this year! https://www.inquirer.com/business/clementon-park-amusement-buy-auction-splash-20210325.html?outputType=amp&__twitter_impression=true The owners of an Indiana amusement park purchased bankrupt Clementon Park and Splash World at auction Tuesday and vowed to continue operating the 114-year-old facility that shut down in 2019. “They have indicated they plan to reopen later this year,” Bill Firestone, the president of Capital Recovery Group (CRG), which conducted the auction, said Wednesday. Indiana Park Holdings LLC, which operates Indiana Beach Amusement and Water Park, paid $2.37 million for the 52-acre lakeside site in South Jersey, according to a CRG news release. That price for the park in its entirety — its lake, liquor license and rides — surpassed the total bid by several other entities on Clementon’s individual assets, Firestone said. A South Jersey-based group, Fresh Development LLC, was interested in the site and raised $3 million, but had to withdraw from the bidding. “Unfortunately, we had a wire transfer of money that didn’t clear in time,” said Melvin Brown, Fresh Development’s founder. “It was a learning experience and we’re going to try to keep the momentum going.” The recent history of the Indiana park, which is located on Lake Shafer in Monticello, about 90 miles from both Indianapolis to the south and Gary to the north, is remarkably similar to Clementon’s experience. It closed in 2020, and its then-operators said it would be shut permanently. But Indiana Beach Holdings purchased it and reopened the facility, with COVID-19 restrictions, in June. With four water rides and 43 amusement rides, it is similarly sized to Clementon. Clementon, one of the nation’s first trolley parks, debuted in 1907. It was family run until 2011 when it was sold to Premier Parks. It closed for financial reasons in September 2019. Indiana Park Holdings did not immediately respond to a request for comment. -

Clementon Park Discussion Thread

One company is vying for a chance to revive Clementon Park and Splash World, which will be sold at auction on March 23rd, 2021. Melvin Brown Jr., 31, of Sicklerville, a leader of Fresh Development LLC, in front of Clementon Park and Splash World. Brown hopes to purchase the property in a auction with the goal to keep the amusement park and make into a resort.TYGER WILLIAMS / STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER https://www.inquirer.com/business/clementon-park-splash-rides-roller-coasters-auction-norfolk-state-20210312.html For 114 years, it has rested like some fairy-tale village alongside a spring-fed lake in the dark South Jersey pines. But if Clementon Park and Splash World is going to survive into its 115th, it might need a little magic. The venerable 52-acre amusement park will be sold at auction March 23, 1½ years after it was abruptly shut down. And depending on the vision of its new owner, a corporate park or a housing development might soon replace the rides and water attractions that have delighted generations. How much interest there is in the park, especially amid the muddied financial outlook created by the COVID-19 pandemic, remains a mystery. The auctioneers, Capital Recovery Group, did not respond to requests to identify the names and number of potential buyers. But at least one has come forward, a group of African American investors who intend to maintain the mission of a place that began its existence in 1907 as Clementon Lake Park. “I’m convinced this can still be a great park if it’s run right,” said Melvin Brown, 31, a native of nearby Pine Hill. “The old management just didn’t do what they needed to keep the park alive. They didn’t reinvest any money.” When Brown and others from Fresh Development LLC recently toured the site, they were told that at least six other potential purchasers had visited. Fresh Development is in the process of raising $7 million and, if its bid is successful, plans to reopen Clementon Park in time for the summer season. “I manage stock assets for a lot of people,” Brown said, “and we’re always looking for opportunities. So when we saw that this property would be available, we decided to try and raise the necessary capital.” Clementon Park is being sold at auction on March 23 by Capital Recovery Group, a global private equity firm based in Connecticut. The park has been closed since September 2019. Capital Recovery Group This would be the initial venture for the investment entity Brown created in August in response to the social upheaval that followed the death of George Floyd. Its members, he said, include doctors, other professionals, a network of truckers, and several socially minded individuals. “Our major goal,” he said, “is to try to find solutions to close the wealth gap” among the races. In a 2019 conversation with park ownership, Brown was informed that the asking price would be $2.5 million to $3 million. That same year the property — about 18 miles from Center City on Berlin Road in Camden County — was assessed at $4.5 million. Whatever it sells for at the auction, Clementon Park, whose previous owners, Oklahoma-based Premier Parks, closed it in September 2019, will require an additional investment in repairs and renovations — “a few million dollars,” Brown estimated. The impact of COVID has made Clementon’s sale more challenging. According to the website Linchpin, which helps various industries analyze their marketing needs, revenue for the global amusement-park business is expected to reach $71.6 billion in 2021, from $73.5 million in 2019. Clementon was one of hundreds of parks that more than a century ago were built at the end of urban trolley lines. But in 2021, unable to compete with larger destination parks such as those operated by Disney and Comcast’s Universal division, only a few dozen remain. A few survivors have found a successful formula, combining nostalgia-inducing traditional rides such as wooden roller-coasters. Pre-COVID, for example, Knoebels had been attracting 1.5 million visitors annually to its remote location in Elysburg, Pa. In addition to its water park attractions, Clementon features a wooden roller coaster with a 105-foot vertical drop plus a giant Ferris wheel, safari train, race-car ride, and a score of other rides. That’s a combination that, many of these parks have discovered, is more appealing to older customers. “A lot of these places like Clementon are finding it difficult to attract a younger demographic,” said Bill Ross, Linchpin’s founder. “Younger people want a more immersive experience. They want tie-ins with brands like Marvel or Harry Potter. They want breakfast with characters, virtual reality-type stuff.” Still, if Clementon can be reopened in time for the summer and COVID-related restrictions are lifted, Brown projects that it could attract as many as 170,000 visitors and $7.5 million in revenue. “We firmly believe we can get it open by then,” Brown said. “I’m not suggesting we’ll be fully up and running because you’ve got to get the proper insurance and licensing from the state. But if we get the proper management and investment dollars into the place, we think it can be very successful.” A Norfolk State graduate, Brown also is the CEO of Fresh Media Group, an enterprise that has helped with branding for such companies as MGM Resorts, T-Mobile and Toshiba. In 2013, he was invited to the White House as part of an Obama administration initiative to involve more people of color in technology. In January, a judge appointed Howard Samuels and Rally Capital Advisers as receivers for the Clementon property, which is 13 miles southeast of Camden. Capital Recovery Group was then brought in to sell it piecemeal or in its entirety. In addition to the rides and water slides, the park includes a 25-acre lake, a dam, and a six-bedroom historical house. It also has a liquor license. Fresh Development also would like to construct a hotel on the site and repurpose Clementon into a weekend-destination resort, one it hopes will benefit from an expected post-COVID demand for outdoor entertainment. “We felt like to do that we were going to need some accommodations, so we think a hotel makes sense,” Brown said. According to Brown, his interest in Clementon, one of the oldest continuously operated parks in the U.S., began when he spent a high school summer operating one of its rides. “It was such a great job for a kid like me,” he said, “and now I’m at a place where I’m capable of bringing the right resources in and bringing out the best in this park.” -
Going backwards in time, before my stop over at Islands of Adventure to check out the Jurassic World VelociCoaster I made my way through CityWalk and went to Universal Studios Florida to experience Mardis Gras: International Flavors of Carnaval. On the CityWalk front, it has been a time of change as all signs of Blue Man Group's presence at Universal Orlando are quickly being removed, while work starts to wind down on the construction of the giant, new Universal Studios Store location and the existing store begins to transition into a new legacy content theme. Mardi Gras 2021 looks very different than previous years because this year there are no concerts and no parade. Building off of the approach of November/December's take on Universal Holidays, Universal has adapted the popular event to shift the focus to food and beverages while enabling a more stationary version of the Mardi Gras parade. Similarly, a new Mardi Gras Tribute Store has opened where the Halloween and Holiday tribute stores opened before. Entertainment and decor can be found at key locations throughout the park, adding a little bit of Mardi Gras flair to the event. Major credit is due to the Universal culinary team for blowing out their menus to add a bunch of new F&B tents and booths to the park--only a few of which were offered in previous years, so many of these culinary experiences are new. The best part is, with thirteen countries' worth of food and drinks to enjoy (check out the full menu here), you can buy a sampler lanyard with 10 items for $55 plus tax, or if you're an Annual Passholder, 15 items for $65 plus tax. Basically, that equates to $6 per item for the base lanyard or around $4.70 per item for passholders. Almost all items are eligible to use the lanyard on and with generous portions, a lanyard could easily be shared between two people (or could really fill up someone visiting on their own like me). Honestly, the food quality was pretty exceptional... Quite possibly my favorite seasonal food offerings I've experienced at Universal Orlando to date. While I look forward to the return of the standard concerts and parades that make Mardi Gras even more memorable in normal years, I really do hope that this food & wine festival-style experience carries over into future years' events. This has been a top notch event! On the way into CityWalk some Blue Man Group advertisements could still be seen. The new Universal Studio Store in the former PiQ/Fossil/Island Traders space has really taken shape! The concept art looks really nice! The space is going to be huge compared to the current store. Some interesting concept art from the inside of the new store. I've arrived! Plenty of new Mardi Gras merchandise can be found in the Universal Studios Store inside of Universal Studios Florida. The Blue Man Group sign has been removed and the side entrance/exit to the park leading to the former Sharp Aquos Theater has been closed. Over near the Music Plaza Stage you start to see themed food and beverage booths themed to different countries and cuisines. In case you're in the market for a Bloody Mary... Two sizes available. Floats from the Universal Mardi Gras Parade are parked strategically to allow for photo ops and entertainment interactions. Hashtag the Panda waves at guests from above... Credit given for putting some cleverly themed booths together! Despite the floats not moving, the combined energy of bead throwers and authentic jazz bands brings an energy to the park that is reminiscent of what you'd find during a normal year's Mardi Gras. A few of the existing food trucks are being used for the event. The Brazil booth proved to be one of the most popular during my visit. Tasting lanyard front... And back. I was excited to the find that the arepas from the previous food truck menu were brought back for this event and this picadillo arepa was delicious as ever! Added a few weeks into the event, a tent offering some of the more popular drinks from across the event can be found opposite Race Through New York starring Jimmy Fallon. I really appreciate the fact that they've put out entertainers as opposed to just parking the floats. It makes this a much more high energy experience when walking by. Even more floats to see... More details on the Tasting Lanyards... I appreciate that they can be used beyond the event for select snacks and bottled water. The Pineapple Trini Chow had been offered at last year's event and I loved it then. This year's version is a more substantial serving with two skewers, well charred and seasoned. This was the the one item I went back for seconds on later in the day. I had heard good things about the Italy booth's Arancini and I was not disappointed! Some more fun photo ops with entertainers can be found throughout the park. Some of the booths leverage existing F&B locations during this temporary event. Fast & Furious Supercharged has reopened for anyone that's interested... Fresh meat over at the Cuba booth! I was truly excited to see the Germany have such an extensive menu. Beers and brats for the win! There are no special Mardi Gras offerings in Diagon Alley, but there are plenty of delicious options to enjoy here year round! The Jerk Chicken and the Goombay Smash were both great surprises at the Bahamas booth! Doc Brown was out and about for socially distanced photo ops! A dance party was going on in front of this float! Belgium had fresh waffles in case you were wondering. Canada gets its own quick service venue! Beef poutine and a maple sugar doughnut that looks suspiciously like a Beaver Tail... Both delicious! A It was quietly confirmed a few weeks ago that "A Day in the Park with Barney" had permanently closed after a 25 year run. It closed when the parks shut down and never reopened. Signage and the Barney fountain were both removed around the same time the permanent closure was confirmed. No replacement for this show has been announced at this time. The Spain booth makes really clever use of a quiet corner of the park. This delicious paella is served in a themed disposable paella pan! Central Park Crepes offers the event's sole French-themed food item, a Poached Pear Crème Brulee Crepe. This pavilion near the park's lagoon has been turned into one of the New Orleans-themed booths, this one offering seafood boils and beignets. I forgot just how many floats the Mardi Gras parade normally has! Pretty neat to see during the day! Drinks and coasters... Always a fine pairing. You can still get your beads tossing fix in! Time to head into the Mardi Gras Tribute Store! The theming in these stores continues to be on par with the interior of a Halloween Horror Nights house. Lots to see and potentially buy inside. A clever way to mask the Made to Order system... Very Horror Nights-esque. Fans of the classic Mold-a-Rama machines will be happy to know that Universal continues to update theirs for the rotating Tribute Stores. Pirates are a prominent theme at this year's Mardi Gras and thus an entire section of the Tribute Store carries that theme. A pirate-themed Mold-a-Rama... My favorite part of each Tribute Store is the food section! Lots to choose from! This event's unique gummy is a moving sour gummy skull. The jaw moves while at rest here! The Vegan Skull brownie makes a return from the Halloween Tribute Store, albeit with Mardi Gras touches... It is still an absolute knockout! One more Trini Chow for good measure! Stuffed to the brim, I finished my culinary journey with a strawberry & pineapple caipirinha and a bag of beignets. I was covered with powered sugar when finished, but the end result was well worth it! One last look at the former Universal Studios Store before the new location opens up!

Two weekends ago I made my way back to the Universal Orlando Resort to experience the new Mardi Gras offerings, but also to get a chance to see Velocicoaster testing. I'll have photos from Mardi Gras to share soon, but I figured I'd start with the most exciting update first, which is a giant Intamin coaster opening in Orlando! Entering Islands of Adventure, you'll notice something new on the horizon... I thought my timing couldn't have been better... A few seconds later I stood corrected. I finally had the chance to see the Velocicoaster in action and it looks ridiculously fun! Jurassic Park wasn't the only section of the park that was looking great today! Passing through Hogsmeade towards Jurassic Park, you get a view of the bowl section of the second half of the coaster... Making its second loop around before making its way back towards the station. New Velocicoaster signage has been put up in Jurassic Park matching the styling and theming from park signage shown in Jurassic World in the film of the same name. The entrance path features several raptor statues. It is going to be neat to walk this space with trains flying upside-down overhead. There are few spots in Jurassic Park where Velocicoaster can't be seen running at this point. This is a pretty awesome thing in that it adds a new kinetic energy to the land. Definitely cool to see! The walls have come down around the first half of the coaster. I was so excited to see the coaster running up close that I totally forgot to get an overview shot of what the area looks like from behind the themed barriers, but as you'll see in the following photos, they allow you to get some really fantastic, unobstructed views of the ride in motion. The entire first half of the coaster can be seen from this side of Jurassic Park. I absolutely love this angle... So I stayed in this same spot for a few minutes to watch the trains cycle. Velocicoaster weaves in and out of itself in a really neat way. Time to fly into the second launch! It really is a spectator-friendly coaster! The rockwork does a really great job of framing the coaster elements. Dive! Dive! Dive! It looks so great! I also love the design of these trains! The transition into the 2nd launch is really quick. Rockwork appreciation... Zoom... Zoom... Zoom... I feel like this will probably end up being the most photographed section of the Jurassic Park after the coaster opens. More fun angles. I'm ready to ride. How about you? The skyline at Universal Orlando has definitely changed!

This morning it was announced that construction on Universal's Epic Universe theme park will resume after being paused due to COVID-19! https://blog.universalorlando.com/destination/universals-epic-universe-is-back/ Work is resuming on Universal Orlando Resort’s Epic Universe, the widely anticipated theme park that will create an entirely new level of theme park entertainment. Work on Epic Universe paused in July 2020, as the company adjusted plans in the midst of the pandemic. The restart will begin immediately, but is expected to take several months before reaching full-speed as Universal restaffs for the project and reassembles its vendor and contractor teams. Restarting Epic Universe will result in hundreds of jobs within Universal and thousands of jobs across Central Florida. These positions include highly-skilled professional positions, all levels of construction jobs and more. The Epic Universe project will infuse billions of dollars into the Florida economy and generate more than 14,000 permanent jobs in addition to the thousands of jobs that will be created during its development. “The restart of construction of Epic Universe is a terrific moment for our employees and for our theme park business in Florida,” said Brian L. Roberts, Chairman and CEO of Comcast Corporation. “It is our single largest investment in the state and represents our enthusiasm for the spectacular park and the economic opportunities it will generate.” “We are excited to begin work on Epic Universe again and for what this moment means for our industry, our community, our business and our team members,” said Tom Williams, Chairman and CEO for Universal Parks & Resorts. “Our confidence in our collective future is as strong as ever.” “The resumption of the Epic Universe project couldn’t come at a better time,” said Orange County Mayor Jerry L. Demings. “Our community has so many talented workers who will benefit from this massive project. I am confident it will deliver a huge economic boost to Orange County.” Epic Universe will feature a new theme park, an entertainment center, hotels, shops, restaurants and more. It will be located on a 750-acre site that nearly doubles Universal’s total available acreage in Central Florida. It will be located a few miles from Universal Orlando’s current theme parks in Southwest Orange County (specifically, south of Sand Lake Road and east of Universal Boulevard). “Our vision for Epic Universe is historic,” Mr. Williams said at the time the project was announced. “It will build on everything we have done and become the most immersive and innovative theme park we have ever created.”

It has been officially announced that Herschend Enterprises will become a majority partner and operator of Kentucky Kingdom and Hurricane Bay! https://www.hfecorp.com/whats-new/ Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear joined Herschend Enterprises Chief Executive Officer Andrew Wexler, state officials and community leaders to announce that Herschend Enterprises has become a majority partner and operator of Kentucky Kingdom and Hurricane Bay amusement and water park located in Louisville, Kentucky. Georgia-based Herschend is the nation’s largest family-owned theme attractions and entertainment company. Herschend operates popular tourism attractions such as the Dollywood® Parks & Resorts in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee and the Newport Aquarium® in Northern Kentucky. As a national competitor in the tourism industry, Herschend has a history of delivering world-class entertainment experiences to its guests. Through a collaborative effort between Kentucky Kingdom, LLLP, the Kentucky State Fair Board, the Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet, and the Finance and Administration Cabinet, Herschend will now expand its business operations to Louisville as the new majority partner of Kentucky Kingdom Theme Park, LLC. This expansion will bring enhanced entertainment and amusement park management experience that will benefit the operations at Kentucky Kingdom and Hurricane Bay.“After opening Newport Aquarium in 2008, we’ve been actively seeking an opportunity to bring even more entertainment to the great state of Kentucky and that dream begins today,” said Herschend Chief Executive Officer Andrew Wexler. “We’re honored to be welcomed into the beautiful and historic city of Louisville, and thrilled to build upon the exceptional 25-year legacy of Kentucky Kingdom.” Kentucky Kingdom and Hurricane Bay cover a 65-acre entertainment complex that enjoys a solid reputation of being a safe and fun amusement and water park, offering visitors the convenience and value of two parks in one. The park opened to the public in 1987 following an announcement by the Kentucky State Fair Board that a theme park would be built on the grounds of the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center. Negotiations with Herschend Enterprises began last year for the sale of ownership interest in Kentucky Kingdom, LLLP. “We are pleased to turn the park over to a new generation of leadership. Herschend is an outstanding operator, who will undoubtedly take Kentucky Kingdom & Hurricane Bay to the next level. We expect their involvement will add greatly to the Commonwealth’s thriving tourism industry,” said Kentucky Kingdom’s founder, President and CEO Ed Hart. As part of its commitment to the park, Herschend Enterprises is bringing Craig Ross, Dollywood’s President for the past 10 years, to serve as Kentucky Kingdom’s interim General Manager. Ross plans to further develop Kentucky Kingdom’s exceptional 25-year legacy by tapping into his decades of family entertainment experience at one of the nation’s top theme parks. Under Ross’ leadership, Dollywood surpassed Disneyland and was named among TripAdvisor and USA Today’s best theme parks in the world. “This is an exciting moment, and I am so honored to work alongside the community, our season pass holders, and our valued guests in building a bright future for this beloved park,” said Ross. “We strongly believe in using guest and community input to create amazing experiences and will be reaching out to the Louisville community for input on enhancements they’d like to see at the park, including attractions, shows and events. This feedback will be critical in creating a long-term plan for success and growth.” Herschend will implement a strategic plan to expand the operation of Kentucky Kingdom Theme Park, LLC to be consistent with the guest experiences offered at other Herschend owned and managed locations. Future plans for the Louisville amusement and water park include: Building the appeal for multi-generational families; Hosting family-friendly seasonal and themed events and festivals; Enhancing product and guest experiences through rebranding and the addition of Herschend-owned programming, such as costume character appearances; Expanding of the season to provide entertainment to more park guests; and Building relationships with state and local tourism partners to increase awareness and entice travel to Kentucky Kingdom, Louisville and the Commonwealth. Kentucky tourism is an $11.8 billion industry in the Commonwealth and is the third largest industry in Louisville, generating an annual economic impact of $3.5 billion. Herschend entertains more than 14 million guests per year at 25 properties located in eight states. “Herschend’s decision to expand its operations in the Commonwealth is a reflection of the state’s reputable tourism industry and the commitment by this Administration to move Kentucky forward by investing in tourism and economic development,” said Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet Secretary Mike Berry. “We look forward to being a partner with Herschend to promote their vision for a newly reimagined attraction that will create a multi-generational experience that visitors across the nation will travel to Kentucky to enjoy.” Situated at the intersection of Interstate 65 and Interstate 264, Kentucky Kingdom shares a parking lot with the Kentucky Exposition Center. The park’s location is easily accessible to visitors from Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Lexington, Nashville and St. Louis with more than 12 million people within 120-mile drive of Louisville. Further, Nashville, Indianapolis and Lexington do not have a local amusement or theme park, making the potential for attracting visitors from those areas promising. “The financial strength and stability of any long-term tenant is of the utmost importance in protecting the Commonwealth’s financial interests,” said Finance and Administration Cabinet Secretary Holly M. Johnson. “Herschend has an outstanding reputation in the theme and amusement park industry, an established financial performance, and a demonstrated ability to meet short-term and long-term obligations. Under Herschend’s leadership, the Newport Aquarium® has been ranked by USA Today as one of the top 10 aquariums in the nation, and we welcome their expanded presence in Kentucky.” Operated by the Kentucky State Fair Board, the Kentucky Exposition Center is the sixth largest facility of its kind in the United States. Home to the Kentucky State Fair, National Farm Machinery Show, the National Archery in Schools State Tournament, and the Danny Wimmer Presents Louder than Life Festival, as well a variety of concerts, sporting events and some of the top tradeshows in the country, this state-owned venue has a national reputation for hosting an assortment of premiere events. The Kentucky Expo Center’s recognition combined with Herschend’s highly recognizable brand will create an opportunity for Kentucky to continue to expand our business and leisure travel market to generate increased travel dollars to foster the economy. “The Kentucky State Fair Board looks forward to working with Herschend to ensure the new vision for the park is successful in Kentucky,” said Kentucky State Fair Board Chair Steve Wilson. “The Board understands the long-term value of having a nationally recognized company like Herschend in Louisville and believes that a positive economic future for Kentucky is ahead.” Known as the home of the Muhammad Ali, the Kentucky Derby, Louisville Slugger baseball, Maker’s Mark and more, Louisville is largest city in America to be designated an international compassionate city. The city prides itself on southern hospitality, and strives to be a city that is welcoming and inclusive to all guests. Louisville is known internationally for world-class tourism attractions and events.
