It's not that they don't have the money to fix up Space Mountain (and I'm not sure what more you wanted with Pirates).... it's that they're not willing to risk the loss in revenue from having Space or Pirates closed, because MK's attendance is more dependent on foreign or out-of-state tourists than Disneyland (which can afford to close certain attractions for longer periods of time without seeing the same effect on their attendance and hotel revenues).

During busy times Cinderella's Royal Table and the Crystal Palace are booked up way in advance; another full-service character dining experience will be a huge help to the other two restaurants. I'm pretty sure the demand is more than there to support this kind of dinner experience in the park. Plus, look at how many full service restaurants Epcot has, and they don't seem to have a problem supporting them all. MK pulls in bigger numbers than Epcot, and MK's character dining pretty much always requires a reservation, so IMO this is a sure win/profit for MK.

Mitch Hawker 2010 poll
Swimace replied to Skycoastin Steve's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
^^Really? I thought it was equally brutal both times. That ride is INSANE and has so much potential to be amazing, but it was just so rough and painful that it's sitting somewhere around Mean Streak and Son of Beast on my list; had it been smoother it'd probably be up with Ravine Flyer and Voyage. This is probably the biggest disappointment for me as well. I wonder what they're going to do with those circus tents, they're included in the new concept art, but there's no mention of what will be in them in the press release. I'm sure it'll be tame, obviously it's Fantasyland and a major thrill ride wouldn't really fit there. I'm excited about this though, judging from the concept art and description I think it's a safe bet that we can expect a much more heavily themed ride that Barnstormer. Sure, it's going to be a family coaster, but it's also going to be partially enclosed with animatronics. It sounds like it'll be a heck of lot more charming and unique than just another Vekoma rollerskater, and way more exciting than a huge princess meet and greet area. With it being placed in one of the most traffic-heavy areas of Magic Kingdom, I'm interested to see how they'll handle capacity as well.

I think this is a big improvement on their original expansion plans. IMO they had too much princess crap and not enough for everyone else. It's a shame Snow White is getting the boot, but I'm excited that Disney is building a new coaster that (at least at this point) will be unique to Florida. Very cool!

The WDW Disney College Program
Swimace replied to jackskellington101's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
^In my opnion, the two biggest factors in whether or not you're going to enjoy your program are 1) What's your job? and 2)Where and who you end up living with 1)You're in the College Program, so you need to go in accepting the fact that you're going to work a good amount of hours, many of which will be closing shifts. If you're ok working Quick Service Food till 1am or later many nights of the week, that's cool, but I wouldn't enjoy doing that. The CP takes a lot of people for attractions and merchandise, which are solid positions to start in, I'd just say avoid Custodial and Quick Service Food. Recreation is also really awesome and laid back, but they typically don't take too many CP's. 2)The apartments aren't great, but Chatham and Patterson aren't really that bad either. If you end up with a bad roommate, that sucks, but you can always transfer. -
^As an Florida local who has had the opportunity to ride this several times, I have to say the experience can vary a TON. I've had great rides, and I've had really rough rides... it's really hard for me to rank Rockit because of that. However, I have to say that (and I believe this is true of Adam as well), one of the best rides I had on this coaster was when we were there with you guys in October 2009. So it makes sense that you loved it, cause honestly the first time you guys were there to ride it the thing was running AMAZING, which is good cause I still overall really like the ride. Stupid Rockit, it just gets really grumpy sometimes...

That was the problem with PI though, it was mostly employees that would go to the clubs and not spend money. I don't think PI was ever really too profitable, I thought that it was mostly losing money by the time they closed it. If you're a local in Orlando and you want to buy drinks, you go downtown where things are reasonably priced. Buying from the bars at Disney, if you're an employee, doesn't make much sense because it's really expensive and you could just pre-game instead. I'm just happy they're finally doing something with the space.

^^Keep in mind that your average Magic Kingdom guest doesn't come just for the rides. Guests at that park invest hours of their time doing things like waiting for the parades, castle and street shows, fireworks, character meet and greets, character dining, etc. So while 10 rides may sound terrible to your average TPR reader, keep in mind that the average MK customer may spend a lot of time doing things other than the rides. I'm not saying that lines aren't ever an issue at MK, I'm just saying that someone who is there for the rides can easily get more than that into their visit. Just that many people choose not to.

Rollercoaster Cuts never really made sense to me. I don't really get why someone would want to get their hair cut at a theme park, I actually think that's sort of weird. I mean, a haircut place fits in thematically on Main Street at Disney... but how Six Flags ever think this would fit in to their properties is beyond me. Six Flags, focus on what you're good at. I'm glad their cutting all of this extra crap from the company.

Photo TR: Celebration City (Defunct)
Swimace replied to chadster's topic in Photo Trip Report Archive
Awesome! Thanks for posting this. It's such a shame to see such a good looking wood coaster sitting there going to waste. Hopefully Herschend has plans to eventually move it, I'd love to see it end up at Wild Adventures! -
Posted on Screamscape this morning Woah! This is pretty of upsetting to me. Most of the time I'm at Downtown Disney it's to see a concert at the House of Blues, that venue is great! It gets more business than any of the other venues in Orlando, and IMO it's half of what keeps the West Side busy. Harley Davidson? Ugh, I don't think I would have any reason to go back to that end of Downtown Disney if the House of Blues is replaced with a giant Harley place. I hope this turns out to be untrue.

Geauga Lake Discussion Thread
Swimace replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Just because we haven't been given any updates doesn't mean things aren't happening! I mean, Cat is probably hard at work pulling up her grades in calculus and preparing for final exams. As you know, you can't really publicly discuss these things. She'll probably wait until final grades come out and then give us an update on how she did. Plus, she can afford to take a break from the whole coaster thing. She has PLENTY of time to raise the money she needs. Once her long awaited t-shirts come out you can bet the money is just going to start flowing! -Andrew -
Ugh, I can't believe I'm about to say this.... but looks like I'll have to take a trip over to Magic Kingdom sometime soon to check out Pooh. Personally, I'm more interested to see what's going on with the Haunted Mansion's queue... but seeing as I haven't done Pooh in years I guess it won't kill me to give it a go.

I re-allocate my travel budget to my bar-tab budget. But then again, I live in Florida... our off season is pretty nice! -
Tokyo Dome City is removing Linear Gale
Swimace replied to Absimilliard's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Didn't they replace Geopanic with a Spiderman/DarKastle-type 4d dark ride? That seems a lot more unique than a crappy enclosed coaster. Probably a lot more enjoyable as well... As for Linear Gale... meh. I'm sad that's a missed "credit" for me this summer in Japan, but oh well.
