Valleyfair (VF) Discussion Thread
RCjunkie replied to the_rock401's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
CF fanboy and apologists are the ones who need to chill. If someone does not want to visit a park anymore because the park has failed to add any new thrilling rides in the last decade to their attraction mix then that is their call. They don't need to 'chill' or do anything. All they need to do is visit a park that is offering what they want. VF is a business and not a charity. If the park wants that customer back then they can build a new coaster or big thrill ride at least once a decade. If not, the park can go another direction and offer a mix of rides or attractions that will attract even more than they think a new coaster or big thrill ride would. Really? Can you list a couple of these problems? I am curious to see what they are. -

Good one! You mean from a park that actually builds attractions instead of just talking about 'growth' in quarterly reports for years? VF attendance increases after they add some thrilling water slides. Kind of funny how that works out. -

If attendance and season passes decline then the park has to ask themselves 'Why did that happen?'. After evaluating that question maybe they come to the conclusion it was a lack of big new thrill ride and that would be their justification for building a new one to try and get the attendance back. That could be a justification to build a new thrill ride or coaster. Just like Carowinds did with Fury 325 to attract more visitors. Like any business, you have to spend money to make money. On the other hand maybe they come to another conclusion of why attendance dropped off and go another direction to get that attendance back in a way that has nothing to do with a thrill ride or coaster. You say that if people stop renewing passes that will be a big problem. It will only be a big problem to the park, not the customers. Doubtful, but maybe an attendance problem could get so bad that they would sell VF to another owner. Possibly an owner that would be willing to invest in the park more than CF does to try and grow attendance. Maybe a new ownership group who sees more potential in the park and would be a little more risky and drop more money into the park than CF to see how far they could take it. That would be a nice problem. VF is not a charity, it is a business and responds to the revenue made (or not made) at the park and acts accordingly to their strategy. I agree with you that VF probably will get a new coaster in 3-5 years. If/when it does add a new coaster I will be the first in line to buy a season pass again and gladly come back to the park and reward the park for that decision. Until then though I will just visit once a year during the twilight fee time since there is nothing new for me at the park over the last 9 years and I have become bored with it and just cannot support VF as a business anymore the way I did. -

For the parks to have large attendance numbers they build new attractions and coasters to attract customers, VF might want to try that for thrill riders once a decade. Amusement parks are like all businesses, they adapt, upgrade or die. Supporting the park like you say doesn't guarantee a new thrill ride at all either. If anything, it reinforces to management that the decisions they are making are OK and to keep on that course. -

^ You probably should put that photo in the Nickelodeon Universe thread. The lines are short during the day but expect to see one train operations on HR and CS for sure all day with Renegade in the morning if not all day. But with the lighter crowds the lines are no longer than 15-20 minutes if not shorter. You will see crowds start to pick up around 5-5:30 pm as they start to show up for Haunt and the ride lines usually start to get busier during that time until 7:00 pm and then they thin out again since most want to hit the Haunts. Last week was perfect weather, looks decent again this weekend. I will be there Saturday during the day to get some laps in. -

Cedar Fair Tests VR at Canada's Wondelrand!

CF needs to test an RMC coaster in one of their parks before testing any type of VR. -
What's causing the U.S Intamin drought?
RCjunkie replied to fraroc's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
RMC has to be one of the reasons why (among others). When you can produce a thrilling coaster like Outlaw Run for 10 million or retrofit an older one for the same amount or less that has to affect decision makers minds when thinking about adding a new coaster to a park. -

Me too, along with the line, "They are adding additions for families because they spend more money.". But like you point out with your family, you have a 10 and 12 year old who both like to ride coasters and so do other families that you have visited the park with. I see the same thing when I visit the park. I first rode High Roller at age 9 so roller coasters are for families too. It is like they think you have to be an adult to enjoy or ride a roller coaster. I think this line really captures the feeling that some of us who have had season passes from 2010 or earlier. -

Never said VF needed world class coaster to stay a float. Never said it was a coaster mecca either, I am just asking for one new coaster every 10 years to update that category of the park's ride offerings. . The park needs a new coaster (because everyone knows VF is not getting a world class coaster) to keep thrill riders coming back to the park and that means the local thrill riders. If you agree with the way they are trying to grow the park then great. Again, I personally don't have patience for it anymore. They have spent the last 5 years adding family attractions and 10 years without a new coaster. When does the thrill seeker who frequents the park get a new attraction? I am bored with the park and like others on this thread will not be renewing my season pass for next year. -

I am not angry at CF for not making VF their jewel park of the chain. But is it too much to ask for one new coaster once every 10 years for a park with VF's volume? I don't think so. And we are not talking about a TOP 25 coaster, just a good one to provide some thrills. Just for the record I am not angry at CF. Just a little disappointed but I do understand until the additional parking lot and moving the service road project gets a decision one way or the other the park will not be making any major investments until they know what options lie ahead for them to invest in. In the meantime Flyers are a nice addition to the park and will fit perfectly in Route 76. I don't think VF can be awesome but it could be a good park instead of an average one with the right additions. Agreed. If VF is lucky by that time CF may not be as attached to B&M coasters as they have been over the last 5 years and would be willing to add another Intamin or other coaster manufacturer to the park. If it has to be a B&M then I would like it to be an invert. Unless of course they want to replace WT with a B&M Hyper, then I am on board with that too. -

Just because 80% of VF's customer base is 2-3 hours away and the biggest coaster they may ever ride is at the park DOES NOT mean Wild Thing is a good coaster either. Compared to all of the other Hypers out there Wild Thing is weak. Maybe if VF had a better coaster line up more customers within the 2-3 drive would visit more often causing greater attendance and revenue. Unfortunately that is not how it works. VF is a business and a business needs to give the customer a reason to spend their money there. Now, VF is doing what they need to do per their business model and investment strategy to be successful and they know much better how to do that than me. But I have been buying $5 Cokes and $6 Corn Dogs (sometimes more) every time I visit (8-12 times a year) for the last 10 years. How much more do I have to spend and how long until I see a return? Just tell me and I'll do it. -

I expected the negative responses from hardcore enthusiasts in this thread about the announcement but I did not expect as much of the negative comments on VF's social media pages though like you said. Some are funny and some are just angry responses. I can't blame them either, even though I do not expect a new coaster for a few more years. A Frisbee would have been nice to mark the 40th anniversary of the park but CF does not seem to really add any substantial additions to their parks during anniversary years. You would think they would want to capture some of that excitement since it only happens once in a lifetime. At least with the 2016 announcement out of the way I can start to complain about what the park will not be getting in 2017. -

That is the VF motto for local thrill seekers! As usual, buy a Platinum Pass instead of a Gold one because if you want something new or thrilling you are going to have to travel. At least Adventureland is somewhat close and their new coaster Monster for next year looks fun and may even be more thrilling than anything VF has so we shall see. -

The expected Flyers are a nice addition! They will fit in perfect in that area and bring a classic ride back to the park. As far as the, " Starting this fall, the space will undergo a complete renovation for future events including an all-new extreme sports show in 2016." it strikes me as pretty lame for my first impression/reaction. I will have to wait and see what it is all about though before passing final judgement. All that prime space is going to be used for this? I admit I am disappointed with the decision to use it that way. And they delayed the announcement for this? -
Suggestion Box for Rob Decker
RCjunkie replied to Rougarou's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
It is because RMC makes some really fun and thrilling rides. If 'presence' or looks made a coaster even half good then Mean Streak would be a half good roller coaster. It's not even close to being any type of good. -

Solid guess, makes sense. Do you think they may personalize it with some local flavor and call them 'Flying Loons'? The reason I am excited is because it sounds like the park is getting something instead of just 'general improvements. -

^ But the line above that under SUB TYPE it has 'Razing' and the line below it under Description it has 'DEMO AMPHITHEATER BLDG". And for Permit Type: Building (It is a building) and Work Type: Remodeling/Alteration it is a BIG alteration...as in getting rid of the defunct thing. It is just a limitation of the form. Plus it has not been on the park map for three years running now. And GM Dave has said it is not up to code for use so it has to be for demolition. -

I am now starting to think that whoever tweeted from the VF account "Announcement coming tomorrow!" was a mistake and they thought it was Friday instead of Thursday when they tweeted that response and the announcement will be tomorrow as planned. I easily could be wrong but it just does not make sense when half of the news day cycle is already done today to make an announcement. Hopefully I am wrong and we do get an announcement though, very curious to see what the park is getting for 2016. -

MiA has not made their announcement yet. They usually wait until after VF makes their announcements.
