Kings Island (KI) Discussion Thread
Kafka replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I suspect the reason that it has been kept SBNO is simply the fact that it would be ungodly expensive to tear down and remove. From what ive read, it seems the major problem with the ride is not the tracking, but rather defects in the super structure itself around the rose bowl. I imagine it would be possible to fix the ride by converting that section to steel supports like those used on Voyage, but it would require action by the gravity group. Currently I have not heard of any plans from either Kings Island or TGG to act in such a manner so this is entirely speculation and thus should be treated as such. Personally I would rather see this ride be redesigned still utilizing the first drop. I believe that TGG or Intamin is approaching the level of technical know-how where they would be comfortable building a ride within the insane specifications of Son of Beast. I believe it is possible to fix this ride if it makes business sense to do so. -

I actually like the new colors on Invertigo. I may be a sucker for the color scheme of Leviathan, but I think this will look great when its fully done. In regards to the crypt being closed, i have mixed feelings. I have some amusing stories from riding it on my KI trip, but I can understand why the park would close it down. After reading about how much strain the ride was under, it makes sense that they would not want to continue dealing with the repair cost. I know im in a minority, but i do wonder about the fate of Son of Beast. I figure its not going to re-open, but im fascinated by the fates of SBNO coasters. I just wish they would announce their plans. -

Id love to see a 4D coaster like X at SFStL, buuut im entirely sure this will never happen If i remember properly the price of these coasters are outrageous. At this point there are only two of these coasters in the world and even though there is another one being built, I highly doubt we will see these become the new ride to copy like batman was. If it was it would make my year, but I believe i am being realistic with this. -
What's your favorite Flat ride?

Can i list fair rides? if so my favorite is probably the chance zippers. If not, probably xcalibur at SFStL. -

I think a lot of it is the timing. Six flags STL was making rather cryptic announcements about ride changes, so it makes sense that people took this one a little more seriously then they should. The park certainly needs a new steel coaster and Bizzaro would be an amazing choice if it ever happened. I think regardless this season will be really good because it seems that this park is putting a lot of effort into keeping the park looking and running smoothly. Overall I think the new paint on several of the coasters looks great and makes the park aesthetically better. The park is certainly moving in the right direction and id love to see what happens when they get a new coaster. -

I agree with Screamin Eagle, Tidal wave is a lot of an eyesore. Its a very old ride that should at some point be removed for something else. I think it would be great if we got Bizzaro even though im still a little unsure where the rumor of us getting that ride originated. I think the park needs a new steel coaster really bad, since its been years since we have gotten an intense steel coaster. I would prefer to see a hyper go up at six flags stl, but anything would be awesome. -kafka- -

Ive been hearing rumors for the last couple years that they were gonna remove the Tidal Wave. To be honest, I thought that was going to be removed along with the swings to make room for Sky Screamers queue. It was a bit of a surprise to see it still open on opening day last year. It would be sad to see some of the bigger arrow loopers go away. I really want to ride Phantom's revenge and I quite like Vortex even though its pretty rough -kafka- -
Looking at it, it makes the most sense to get one. Ill do my best to convince them that this is a worthwhile endeavor. Ill admit ive never used one before because I am relatively new to these kinds of trips. Last year was the first time Ive been to a park outside of my home park of Six flags STL. I definitely am thankful for the advice. I think i may take a day or two at Great adventure, hopefully one with a q-bot to get all the credits and another day to go around the park riding anything we feel like riding again before leaving. If we do this it is entirely possible to go to SF New england, which is great because I would love to ride Bizarro. thanks again! -Kafka-
-
The people i go with rarely get Q-bots, so ill discuss the idea with them. If not is it possible to do the park in a day, if we are willing to spend one very long day at the park? I considered Lake Compounce when i made the park listing, but didnt know about the time. We mainly want to go to Dorney Park due to the fact that I can go through the park fairly inexpensively and I would like to ride all of the Morgan Hypercoasters.
-
I apologize if this has been discussed before, but im planning to take about seven to nine days to travel from St Louis to the north eastern corner of the US. On the way i am planning to hit Cedar Point, Kennywood, Hershey Park, Dorney park, and Six Flags Great Adventure. If it was possible, i was considering driving a bit further to go to Six Flags New England since its only a few more hours away. I was planning to spend a couple days a Cedar Point since ive already been there and have the majority of the credits. I think i can go through kennywood and Dorney Park in a day each respectively. The parks I wasn't sure about were Hershey Park and Six Flags Great Adventure. I was thinking of trying to get to HP around five one day, take advantage of the demo day and then spend another full day at the park. I am entirely unsure how much time I need at Six Flags Great Adventure To make this easier to consider Cedar Point- 2 days Kennywood- 1 day Hershey Park 1 and a half days Dorney Park 1 day Six Flags Great Adventure 2-3 days Six Flags New England? not even sure if possible Does this seem doable? I know it will be a lot of driving, but i think it will be a lot of fun with my group of friends. Thank you in advance for the advice -Kafka-

I agree that this park needs a standout steel coaster. I think they could go the SFMM approach and put it out in the giant neigh unused parking lot they have. I would love to see something like that done even though it wouldn't be aesthetically pleasing. -kafka- -

Not sure how i feel about this one honestly. On one hand id love to see this park up and running again just because of the fact that its within driving distance of where I live and the fact that the Koch family has done wonders with Holiday World. On the other, I can see the KYSFB being a massive hindrance to them. Im sure if it does get settled then the result will be positive due to the amount of care that goes into HW. -Kafka- -
Worst Coaster Ever?
Kafka replied to Mind Eraser's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Thats a hard call, maybe its a mark of my inexperience, or my foolhardy determination to ride rides even as they beat me senseless, but I havent really encountered any rides that i could call the worst ever. Even with rides like the ninja at sfstl which are frequently considered terrible I am willing to ride them several times if the opportunity presents itself. I wouldnt say the ninja is a great ride by any stretch of the imagination, but its certainly not un-ride-able. Rides that have beaten the everloving crap out of me would be rides like Timberwolf and Worlds of Fun and Mantis at Cedar Point. I still dont think the Mean Streak is unbearably rough, even though the coaster is kinda dull. -
I used to be terrified of coasters, so my friends dragged me, kicking and screaming , onto what they thought was the most intimidating coaster at my home park. I was freaking out the entirety of the lift hill, but once i got past the first drop i fell in love. Its certainly possible to help someone no longer be afraid of coasters even though i cant suggest what my friends did for everyone. If its the initial drop that scares the person it could be helpful to find a ride that looks rather scary, but isnt really all that bad. This requires the person to trust your judgment and your knowledge of the coaster in question, but it can help give them some confidence in riding bigger rides. We did something different with my cousin and had her work her way up to the big rides. It worked for her too, so that is definitely an option as well. It depends really on how willing they are to dive in and what they are afraid of. -kafka-

Holiday World (HW) Discussion Thread

I rode the voyage quite a few times in the 2011 season. The first set of rides it was rough, but it was still an enjoyable experience. The second trip it was neigh unridable, but that is likely due to the rain. I have a feeling that if they get the kinks hammered out of this ride it will be absolutely amazing. Even if they dont get the Timberliners on it. -Kafka- -

Topper Track makes sense too. I think it would be a good addition to this ride since it has a reputation for being rough. Personally i dont think its nessecary since the ride has been running a lot smoother over the last season, but it would be a great addition. Im not counting out SFSTL for getting something awesome soon, because the park has been making significant modifications to its rides for the last few seasons. I believe a lot of work has been done to make this park better and i feel that a new coaster wouldnt be out of the question. -

The Hannibarrels aren't going anywhere anytime soon, and they don't have any plans to move it or put it into operation, according to my park sources. as far as the announcement, it IS pertaining to one of the coasters at the park, this I do know, just don't know what its going to be. But looking at the quote that doesnt make too much sense. They said they tried it, which makes me doubt that it is anything involving any major construction. If its involving an existing coaster maybe, note this is wild speculation, they are changing the trains on the Boss. That would make sense and would be possible for them to test in November. Other then that, part of me doubts this is major news even though i would love for it to be. In regards to further development to the park, i would love to see a signature steel coaster. Preferably a hypercoaster or a megalite. I kinda doubt it will happen, but it would make sense because the park has a really good offering of flats and has been developing the water park quite a lot in the last few years. Everything here is wild speculation, so take everything i say with a grain of salt. -Kafka- -
Help plan SFStL, HW, WoF, SFGAm trip
Kafka replied to megametal's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Your plans for the trip sound fairly solid. I havent been to Holiday world on a weekend so i cant say how long the lines will be, but you should be able to get all the credits in one day regardless. Six flags STL and Worlds of Fun shouldnt be much of an issue. On mondays Six Flags STL is usually kinda slow, unless you plan to hit the water park. Even then its entirely doable. Worlds of Fun is similar from my limited experiences at the park. I dunno about Six Flags Great America though, since i have not gotten the chance to go to that park yet. In regards to rain policies, Six flags STL is a bit strict on rain policies and will close the coasters during the rain. Holiday world has one of the most liberal rain policies I have ever seen at a park. Seriously one time last year it was 60 and raining consistently and they kept all the coasters running even though there were few people in attendance. That led to some awesome situations including getting to ride the voyage by myself. Have fun, Six flags is my home park so feel free to ask anything else -Kafka- -

I rode it for the first time in this summer, I didnt think it was a bad ride at all. Ill admit its a bit rough, but its nowhere near as rough as some of the woodies ive ridden in the past. I remember thinking that it was a shame that no one is riding it, since it was as good as the boss and that ride always has a one of the longest lines at my home park. -
Near Death Experience- On our last trip to holiday world, we had the park almost to ourselves due to nasty weather. The park's policy on running rides seems to be more or less as long as its not storming the rides run. Ive noticed that wooden coasters seem to run faster and rougher when its rainy. The other factor that was concerning was that it seems that with less weight in the trains they run even rougher. On the Legend, when we got to the top of the first hill it started raining hard. Me and my two friends were the only people on the coaster and by the time we hit the upward banking hills I felt that the wheels on the train were comming off the track when we hit the turn. I know that its extremely unlikely that the train could come off the track, but these were rather extreme circumstances. This happened everytime we hit a banked turn and it scared the crap out of me every time we hit a turn. Another story, its a fairly popular occurance, albiet how stupid it is to actually do, that people drop coins on the spike on Mr. Freeze. Usually this is dangerous, but not deadly. On one of our rides someone threw, not just dropped, a half dollar. By the time we got to the bottom of the hill, the coin was like a missile that was coming straight for our heads. Not a good idea- Same day, on the third time on Voyage, the ride was bone shatteringly rough. By then it felt like i was going to crack a rib or pass out from the newly developed headache. Not a fun ride for sure.

2011.. What was your highlight?

Going to Cedar Point for the first time. I had so much fun there Riding Voyage at Holiday World from the front seat as the only person on the train. That was amazing. -
Most. OverRated. Ride. of 2012.
Kafka replied to Chroniq's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Most Overrated Lex Luthor Drop of Doom- Im just not impressed with this ride at all. Im not a huge fan of drop rides to begin with, but i feel like they havent done anything new with it. This ride is too similar to the drop tower on Tower of Terror II. Stinger and Apocalypse dont really count in my mind, they arent new rides. Rides I question the hate for Verbolten- Honestly I dont understand the hate for this ride. Its not super intense, but it looks amazing at what it does. Ill admit the first time I saw Cheetah Hunt I was unimpressed. Over time the idea grew on me and im willing to admit from what ive seen its probably a good ride. The thing is Verbolten looks even better. The ride seems to do a great job with the terrain, which is one of the things that I love on coasters. The building that it dives into looks absolutely amazing. It may not be fast, but it looks like it will be exciting. Leviathan- I think that this could be a great ride. I like B&M hypers personally. From my limited experience, Diamondback at KI, i find these rides very fast and very smooth. I have a hard time believing that this ride wont be an amazing ride. -
How Old Are You & What Was Your 1st Coaster?
Kafka replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Screaming Eagle- Six Flags STL, I was six. The ride really scared me and i didnt ride coasters again until i was 18. After the years of not riding, the ride that got me hooked was Batman the Ride at the same park.
