  1. Texas Giant relied on it's upstops as much as any coaster out there if not for some of the airtime definitely in a lot of the laterals on the curves. The last leg of the ride pretty much had the road wheels in the air on the right hand side of the train. This new track system will be more than capable of holding a train , but it's not going to stall on the overbank. that like saying a ride would roll back on a bunny hill. It will be designed with plenty of speed, and I don't understand this catwalk debate. Steel coasters get inspected too. I am confident that Giant will have catwalks along 95 percent of the ride. Steel track does not mean few inspections. Gemini gets a thorough inspection along its STEEL tracks with CATWALKS twice a week, and they often do find things to work on along the way. Giant will be a far more dynamic ride than Gemini and will most likely have daily inspections along the entire course.
  2. Ha ha!^ that is a good question actually. First of all, it isn't unusual for Space spiral or the Sky Ride to close for wind. It's not however as big an issue as you might think out on the lake. I laugh at your Space Spiral question though because I do literally wonder how the ride is still physically standing. On days when it is closed for wind, you should venture over to it and check out the crazy scary swaying of the tower with the cables slamming into it. I would guess you have at least 5 feet of movement at the top in each direction. It's intense!
  3. It's ok folks! I"ve got it covered! Quite a few signs are up for Giant now, and in other news Shockwave lost it's Axe motif and is now sporting Got2BGlued ads instead. I don't have Shockwave photos but plenty of Giant ones. Have a look see! This in on the midway about halfway back to the ride from the park entrance. Can anyone confirm that this illustration is actually the original one used in 89 and 90 to promote the ride? I think it is, and if so I applaud the throwback to the ride's roots. Very fun stuff. here is the one on the station Here is one of several strung along the fence heading to Titan here is just to show you where they have the banners at the ride. This one is over near the other end of the park near the Rockin Rocket, and Aquaman. It's one of only two I noticed in the park away from the ride itself, but there very well may be a couple more. Moving on to the ride now here is the lower bunny hill, now tracked, behind the double up. the track is finally working it's way up to the drop leading into the bunny hill. And another progress report graphic
  4. This is fun news! I think photos are in order here for sure!
  5. The SCAD tower in Dallas makes you sign a waiver as do most of these types extreme upcharge rides. There are reasons for that. Obvious reasons being that these attractions require a lot of faith in the human element i.e. the operators MUST secure everything properly, and set up equipment correctly and the riders must adhere to guidelines, and behave in a safe manner. You don't have as many control factors and backups in place as with traditional amusement devices. This is what adds to the thrill, and unfortunately, due to that, when things go wrong the attractions themselves seem to get a bad wrap, when in fact, I think it's the human element that makes things go wrong far more often. I'll be shocked if we learn that this incident was the result of equipment failure and not operator error, or guest misconduct.
  6. ^ There is a lot wrong with the reporting in my opinion. There always is in these circumstances. Sorry to have overlooked your comment on the 40ft bit. It's hard to find much within all the repetitiveness in this thread.
  7. Nobody in this thread seems to have pointed out that they say the girl only fell 40 feet. It is my understanding that these towers take you up 150ft, and drop you 100 of those feet into the net which sits 50 feet off the ground. This leaves me a bit confused as to where the platform and net were set when she dropped. The net would not even be off the ground if the platform was only up 40 feet. They also say she landed in gravel. With the landing pad below how did she hit gravel? I did the permanent tower in Dallas about a month ago and I only know how that one operates, but there they have a controller on the ground who raises and lowers the cage, and the operator in the cage is the one dealing with all the rigging for the people on board. Is that not how it always works? If this is also the case in the Dells, then how would a person on the ground not realize he/she parked it so low? If they were only up for her for fall 40 feet, how did the person in the cage release her so prematurely? Not very much is adding up here.
  8. HA HA! That is EXACTLY what a friend and I have been saying to each other all summer. It's like they are making it up as they go. There has been so much trial and error while they do it that if the track wasn't prefabricated I would think they were making it all up. They put pieces up, take them down, put them up again, bolt them, unbolt them, move pieces around... It seems very wishy washy. It makes it fun to watch though, and I'm glad to hear the third drop is going all the way down now! I wondered if it would since the fourth one does. Now if we can just get the original double up back I'll be content.
  9. ^That poses and interesting thought. I hope it's not a level turn. It would really wreck what little of Giant's appearance there is at this point. I mean I'm all for the upgrades in the profile so far, but I still want to be able to recognize the ride's former self within it. They may be sharpening the peak of the turn for the 95 degree banking. If that is where it is going then the old profile had far too broad of a "crown" to pull that off, and we could see it getting tightened up for that very reason. It's like Christmas every weekend seeing the new changes down here!
  10. There has been a little more progress on the double up over the last week or so. I FINALLY got up the tower for the first time in almost two months! I'm sorry but Arlington is not always THAT windy. I'll not get into my Oil Derrick rant here, but give me a break SFOT. Anywho, here's what there is to look at for now. Houston, we have banking. (I know this isn't Houston) They will clearly have to cut down more structure before this can go any further. Looks like the entire first turn will have a new profile. Finally an updated diagram. I haven't done one in a while. It's hard to see but there are quite a few ledgers on the inner leg of the layout behind the double up. I CANNOT WAIT to see this part get tracked!
  11. Yes, there will be handrails on at least one side. The first turn already has one, and all track ties on the lift are sticking out to install the catwalk on the right hand side, however the double up looks to have the catwalk on the left. Steel track doesn't mean it doesn't need catwalks either. Look and any mine ride, or Gemini for example.
  12. I'm not thinking Boardwalk Bullet is a very strong player in TGG arsenal. No doubt the rest of their rides deliver, and I'm actually intrigued to see what they come up with for a racer, but I also have a hard time getting excited about coasters over seas because my chances of riding them are very slim.
  13. I think it's cool, but I am also a bit underwhelmed by this. I did it on a coaster on No Limits a few years ago. I guess I should be excited to see it become a reality but where is the fun when I don't get the credit for the concept?
  14. ^ I've been wondering about the midcourse actually. A friend and I have discussed the idea of it not being there anymore and just running two trains with a pretty swift lift hill speed. What made you think it won't be back?
  15. I didn't see this posted anywhere else, but there was a fire at CP last night. The main maintenance building burned. I can only wonder what this will do to operations. Isn't this the first significant fire in the park's history? http://www.fox59.com/news/sns-ap-oh--cedarpoint-fire,0,7881699.story
  16. What does the helix have to do with the lift hill? The only new thing with the lift is the extra 10 feet at the top as far as I know. I think what he was referring to was the fact that they had to remove that side of the helix to make the lift accessible for construction. It was in the way so they cut it down until the lift is ready is my take on it.
  17. I don't think I ever liked the helix. It was a very dull portion of an otherwise very wild ride. I'm certain it will be back, but hopefully they will spice it up a bit, like making it drop to the ground and do a low turn after it crosses over the lift, and before coming back over the lift again. I do hope they keep the two turns over the lift. I think that was one of the aesthetic signatures of the ride. It wouldn't look like Giant at all anymore without that.
  18. ^Do you mean 90 degree banks like on Voyage being irrelevant? I wouldn't really say that. Anyways BIG NEWS! We have another reprofiled gem in store! Hidden behind and beneath that insane looking double up workers installed new steel ledgers foreshadowing yet another killer air hill before the old block brake! Take a look! A little illustrative embellishment to show you what you are looking at. a wider view Here is what is appears we have in store judging from the remaining structure, but anything is possible it seems! and just a refresher on what this looked like less than 4 months ago. It's quite remarkable really! looking back towards the nearly completed drop and one more tid bit of predictive profiling. I did this one in yellow as well because I have no idea what that drop and turn before the newest bunny hill will be for sure. and another look back
  19. Here are a couple new shots from July 4th the top is creeping over The bottom has a ways to go still. That's all folks!
  20. Was that sarcasm? I'm not sure. I wasn't trying to sound like a "know it all" so sorry if I came off that way.
  21. Well I just want to point out that they aren't claiming that much will change with the ride. This may be the only major addition that the profile gets. With a steeper drop there was more room in the pull out section to add this in. I had been theorizing all along that they would have to put in a double up, or a nasty flat section at the bottom of the drop. This totally blew my expectation away, but I wouldn't anticipate any other major changes just yet. The rest of the ride's structure still has the profile in tact except for the midcourse brake, and the helix. The helix was the only part of the ride I thought needed to change anyways, so here is hoping. Anywho, my whole point is I hope people don't start complaining if we don't see any other changes because there is nothing to imply there will be any.
  22. Did someone call for pictures? Oh, I have those! Here is the drop with the bunny hill double up following on Friday evening Here is what the new track will be doing in case it's hard to see Here is the old structure following the bunny hill double up. By Saturday afternoon they had tracked it! It really levels off before it heads up to the old turn. the airtime is going to be amazing! And here is the latest diagram. There we have it folks!
  23. Anyone notice the slew of people wandering around under the ride with no fences for the low zones? Love foreign parks!
  24. Well there hasn't been much to report since they topped the ride off about a week ago so here is a new view for everyone to peek at. Here is a view from the road behind the park you don't see often. Sorry. Cell pic, low quality. Here is a good look at the old profile beneath the new. Giant sunset drop.bmp And a sunset view from Judge's platform foreshadowing the new drop profile to come! And also this happened...
  25. To anyone who may be interested, they topped off the ride already. I'll post pics soon.
