Canada's Wonderland Discussion Thread
DirkFunk replied to BDG's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I don't hate the addition: I think Wonderland's collection of flats is about as strong as anything anywhere. But I'm also a bit like "Maybe build some more indoor stuff? You're in Toronto?" -

Thinking about making a stop in this upcoming Sunday because....reasons. If I don't arrive at opening (don't ask me to, I literally cannot if I even go), what should I expect to wait to ride Monster? -
I remember people flipping out at the capacity of Superman at SFDK. Or Green Lantern at SFMM. Or every single 4D Free Spin (especially at the larger parks). This one really shouldn't be worse than those. Well, the FreeSpin coasters have higher capacity than these (they have the equivalent of 5 trains on this) and they're more likely to see interest decline to flat ride levels over time than a big full circuit ride. Also, let's be real - their capacity really isn't great. But Six Flags doesn't so much care about that in new rides.
-
Parks opening coasters that have less capacity than single train operations on a B&M just makes me shake with rage. But I also Six Flags is looking to go cheap, so that's what we're gonna get. I think it will be a good ride so long as any OTSRs aren't too bulky. I also think in a park with Iron Rattler and Superman already present that I'd have preferred them go with a mid-size wood coaster from Gravity Group or GCI. But then they'd need to maintain it, so there's that.

Aside from Elyria? There isn't anything. Even that's kinda a crappy 'burb. -

If thrillrider thinks it is a dump, it probably isn't fit for human habitation. Magnuson hotels have a reputation for being total dumps and it is deserved since the company's "brand" is popular with hotel owners seeking to save a few sheckles. I would put my worst enemy there because they'd suffer immensely. Don't have the money for Breakers but you've got a Platinum Pass? Then go with the Motel 6 Sandusky-Milan and commit yourself to spending some quality time in the car. The Knights Inn and Econo Lodge near the causeway aren't anywhere near "good" in a global sense, but only are within the context of Sandusky hoteliers. -

I think at this point, the "how" is pretty clear - the floor didn't "come up" and it never rises enough to hit the gondola when it is in its highest position (otherwise how would it load?), but the seats sheared off almost certainly due to metal fatigue. The question now becomes how, and that's a lot tougher. Is it an isolated incident related to what seemed like incredibly minor/cosmetic damage? Average wear and tear? The steel used in construction? We're not gonna be able to figure that out here on a message board. -

Because this is the internet and so much is available, I looked up the serial number: KMG-2011-FRB-24P-162. I think you're alright to get on "it" soon enough (unless their insurance company is freaking out). In case you were wondering, this ride was KMG98FRB24006. -

If this is true, it kind of surprises me there isn't a secondary safety system in place to prevent this type of harness failure. I know many enthusiast feel seat belts are not needed on harnessed rides, but the simple truth is they help prevent a full failure. And in this case it may have prevented the additional victims from falling out of their seats after the carriage fell from the ride. A "crotch belt" that would run from the restraint to the seat would probably be sufficient for this but who knows why they decided not to install them. -

I looked it up last night and the manual states that a "Level 1 or higher Non-Destructive Test (NDT) Company" is required to annually inspect for welds and joints on these attractions. You wouldn't be able to do something like Ultrasonic testing on this every time it is taken down/put up. -

If the seats were torn off by hitting the floor, there would be substantially more damage to it and the leg injuries suffered by riders (which ride below the seats) would be completely outrageous. Forget broken bones; we're talking limbs and blood everywhere. There wouldn't be just one death because they probably would have bled out on the midway. -

I'm actually relieved to not see people do the usual thing here and say, "That's definitely the operator's fault. Rides are all safe!" afterwards. This is exceptionally not OK. Also this is actually the second time that a KMG ride has had seats decouple and throw people at the Ohio State Fair. A KMG Remix lost a row in 2002 and threw riders into the backsplash. They were injured but lived, and this led to a re-welding of the point at where the seats joined with the arms. -

For the record, when the ride is racked, the seat gondola/row/whatever you want to call it has the same point of attachment to where the point of failure is here, so it isn't like it's being reaffixed at that point or articulated there to put the ride up. More than likely that would be something which would be visually inspected by the inspector (in Ohio that's often something like a Sheriff or Fire Chief, though not always) and looked at annually by someone who does non-destructive testing per KMG's guidelines. It is pretty much no surprise at all that the other rides of this sort from KMG are getting shut down across the board and probably will stay down and off the road until at the very least a cause is determined. -

Yeah, I keep hear about some other mystical video also. Where is it? Find it hard to believe that so many people have supposedly seen this video, but it's nowhere online? Seems suspect. I haven't seen it and I think people are just confused at what they're looking at. There's a video someone took that's about 5ish minutes long of the aftermath and that's actually a thousand times worse than the 5 second clip of the accident itself. -

If I wasn't a pass holder the VIP tour at Kings Island is a great deal. Parking, entry, private tour guide, dining plan, line skip, Behind the Scenes tour, final ride of night on Mystic Timbers, Photo Pass, a bonus ice cream, reserved show seating, and you get to go to the International Restaurant (not open to guests) to get snacks and watch the fireworks. Yeah, that's $249, but think about what a day at Universal Studios Orlando costs plus Express and look at what you get there in comparison. Cedar Point's isn't at that level. -

Yeah, my first thought seeing it was that it was torn off but I've watched it enough now to come to that conclusion. The seating falls off, the restraints pop off immediately, and they land on the people seated across from them before momentum just carries them through the air to.... Lousy way to go. I feel bad for those families. -
Robb & Elissa in the USA - 2017!
DirkFunk replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Ahem, aren't you usually in the USA? This thread title is nonsensical. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to reply to DisneyIsGod92 on Twitter. They have an opinion I disagree with. -
I saw The Melvins and Full of Hell both last year, and no doubt, they're loud. Manowar was loud. Motorhead was loud. But they're not even close to Sunn 0))). That's the end all be all.

THIS. Universal's appeal is that it isn't Disney. They build rides for kids when they "grow up" - older kids, teenagers, the like. They have these big honking coasters there and they're right around the 9-10 million annual attendance number. And instead of realizing that they have this niche that they can exploit and which Disney will never fully commit to battle, what do they do? They do exactly the same thing Disney does because "Well, Disney had a wider market space..." You know what fast food is most popular in America? Burgers. People love burgers. But you know, people like food that aren't burgers too. Some people like tacos. Some people like pizza. Blaze Pizza produces "fast food pizza" in a new and innovative way, and they're the fastest growing chain restaurant since the Colonel probably learned to deep fry. Trying to beat established players is hard as hell at their own game. Disrupting the market by providing a whole new product? That's a different discussion entirely. Disney is McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's, Five Guys, and In-And-Out all rolled into one out in Orlando. Why go head to head with them for the same people? You can't possibly win! You have to sell tacos to their burgers. Again: THIS. It would be one thing if they had built a bunch of rides at those parks of late that proved they still had the creative wherewithal to be trusted with replacing a top-of-the-food-chain coaster. But: -Kong has largely underwhelmed and honestly is mostly forgotten -Literally no one cares about F&TF Supercharged -Jimmy Fallon is a nice C Ticket ride, but that's about it. -Volcano Bay is charging $70 to people to beta test water park queuing strategies to the tune of a two circle average review on Tripadvisor None of what I've heard being seriously bandied about as the replacement leads me to believe there will be a better ride than Dueling Dragons there. None of it. I know you like Tron Robb, and I have no reason to believe it is bad, but boy, I have a hard time seeing an equivalent Potter-based Motorbike competing with fukkin' Dueling Dragons. Or a really themed-up SWSD Manta style ride. Basically, they need to be building Taron in its place, and no one has suggested that in a rumor.
