Which is worse, Arrow or Vekoma?
Tmcdllr replied to MLRC7 CP's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I would say Arrow mainly because they seem to get a lot worse when they age. I wonder, though, if the Invertigos would be considered more rough if they didn't have the super cushy restraints. Both seem to be doomed to roughness because of their inherant design flaws, track, gaps between wheels and track, etc. When you copy something that is already flawed, it usually gets worse. -
Odd looking supports
Tmcdllr replied to TTDluv123's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
You got that right! What the hell? And that's a coaster? Wow, talk about heightening the thrill factor. All the supports in the pic are like that! No thanks, I'll pass on that one for sure. And what the heck is this? I guess Arrow couldn't be bothered to make the spine correctly? There has to be a logical reason for this but I have no idea what it would be. If you look at that same spot here you can see they had to do some welding....hmmm I wonder why. And all I have to say to this is... is there any track? Wow what a mess. It looks like a refinery. -

Yay it's a soaker!!! Perfect! -
Yeah that's right, that's ALL it is. Only part of it is being dismantled to be tested, then after the investigation is over, it will be reassembled and tested I'm sure. All this depends on how long the investigation takes, the lab testing, etc.. This does not mean in any way shape or form that the ride is going to be taken out at all, nothing is for sure it is still very early and all hinges on what they find out, I imagine. I really don't think this would be cause to remove it anyway. Nobody got hurt, there was a malfunction and it stopped like it was supposed to so there is no cause for alarm there. There are other rides still in operation that have caused much worse, why haven't they been taken out? It's almost like sometimes it sounds like whenever a ride has something happen to it like this people immediately jump on the "it's going away" bandwagon without knowing all the facts or waiting until whatever is going on concludes. At this point nobody knows yet what is going to happen, it's too early and just because one park did this and another park did that means nothing.

Looks like a fun ride and I hope it does have the waterfall and you get drenched. Any water ride I go on I expect to at least get wet, otherwise what's the point? If you get soaked, then even better. I find it oddly interesting the 2nd drop is shorter, I can't recall ever seeing that before. I wonder why they designed it that way? Maybe the 1st drop is for the thrill and the 2nd for the splash-(the rocks and water along the sides)? Also, does it have a coaster style lift? I noticed track in the vid. -

Look up Cedar Point on Wiki and under water rides it has a brief description of this Intamin water ride opening 2010. -

Not saying "it's broken" but a company with an impressive record as theirs and the very high quality of their rides surely could easily engineer a coaster topping 300 feet and still retain the great record and quality they are known for. Look at all the outstanding innovations they have developed and perfected. Why should this be any different? Have they ever tried or do they know it's doomed to failure and pursuing 300+ would be pointless? Is 242 the limit before ride quality goes in the dumper? -

I think it's interesting that both rides share (virtually) the same name/themeing yet are completely different. The taller Intamin coaster has more low to the ground elements where as the shorter B&M has lots of airtime hills, both rides very unique. Why doesn't B&M ever go to 300 feet tall? I wish I could get out to those parks to ride both, they look to be very enjoyable. -

^ Interesting observation, I wonder if that ties into this or is another clue. And if someone is going to question the spelling of themeing then why not 'Termy?' What's a 'Termy?' Is it a toy, baby, what? Yes I know it's short for 'Terminator' but it sounds really lame, sorry just my opinion. 'Terminator' makes it sound big, scary, and strong. 'Termy' sounds small, frail, and weak. I don't know, it's just strange it's like calling it that means it's actually yours. Ok let the bashing begin. -

100% sure wood will be involved. Everything points to it. Somebody reading this thread already knows but can't say and is cracking up at all the ideas people have of what it is, I know I would be. -

^ So what are you saying... dive machine? -
When I worked on the 'Barney Oldfield Speedway' people would stop all the time, usually to cause a collision and I would guess people have stopped to take pics, which stops traffic and gives them a chance to get out of the cars which is quite easy, seen it before. Maybe this is CF's way to reduce the possibility of that happening. Although it was funny to see one car ram into another and watch their heads jerk back. I hated working that ride! Glad it wasn't the only one I worked.

You are not crazy, there are 2 tunnels. Demon uses the one on the right and the one on the left was a tunnel the train that used to run around the park went through. For whatever reason they just never removed it. I don't know about the photography policy, seems odd that would be posted on an attraction like that. I wonder why, there's nothing to hide there unless it's part of the no loose articles policy or maybe they don't want people stopping traffic mid ride for a photo op?

Maybe it's not funny, but is it impossible? I mean, could you imagine? That would be wild and painful, spinning around while you get jackhammered to death with water spraying everywhere. What could you possibly theme that after? I thought it was funny. Do we have to be so serious? Isn't one of the things that makes this site so great is it encourages you (well most of you) to have a sense of humor? -

If they have hinted it will be a coaster, have they also hinted the manufacturer or where it might go or anything? -
If they wanted to build a coaster in an area where there is an access road and didn't want it to be visible to the GP, they would find a way to hide it and even if the road passed right through the coaster they would find a way to make it work. So to say they would not build a coaster in a spot that would appear to block an access road is not so. Parks do this stuff all the time and if they want to make it work they will find a way.

That would be cool! Is there such a thing as a B&M hyper with inversions or is that design strictly an 'airtime' coaster with hills and helixes? -
It's almost too bad it didn't happen with TPR there, that would have made for an interesting discussion and I also agree with what you said about the GP and the media. What still bothers me is everytime the media mentions this they call it an accident. Isn't an accident injury/death/severe damage? Nobody was even hurt (hats off to CGA and all rescue staff) so isn't this just considered more of an incident not accident?

Last I heard the coaster was still a go and Cedar Fair was might sue the 49ers because they kept some information from Cedar Fair, I don't have the link but it's in the California's Great America discussion thread. Also the design was slightly modified because of the bitchy prudential neighbors and last rumor was it could now be a hybrid coaster. -
That's very interesting but the computer could have shut it down for many reasons, faulty sensor, etc., not necessarily because of a lift chain problem but who knows. And besides that, coasters shut down all the time because of errors the computers detect, sometimes minor, sometimes operator error, sometimes major, whether that is related to this we will see. As far as the slack I noticed that too but if you look closely in the picture after the chain comes off the pulley there is a 'rail' it rides on, like it's there to hold the chain if there is some slack. But, to the left of that it does look like the chain has a lot of slack. Since we don't normally see this in operation there is no way to know unless someone 'in the know' can shed some light on it. Plus the tensioning mechanism for the chain might be near the gearbox or even at the top of the lift, or maybe there is none at all on this design, although that would not make sense. It's possible if it does have a tensioner that THAT is the assembly that failed maybe causing the chain to have too much slack and bind on something- actually that would make sense as to the cause of this incident and possibly why they could not bring the train back down the lift when this happened. If the chain actually broke, depending on where it broke, I think the train would have just rolled down to the station brakes (if it broke somewhere between the front of the catch car and the gearbox), or if the other section broke they might have been able to bring the train down. Again, don't know plus there probably is a sensor to detect too much slack or a broken chain. If that's the case, then that might have been why they had to evacuate the train. I always wondered what was behind those covers. I knew the chain ran through there but it's neat to actually see it. I know the investigation will take time but I am dying to know what happened!
