Mitch Hawker's Coaster Poll 2009!
Skycoastin Steve replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
^That's all too true about GCI's. I've grown more and more of an appreciation for them every time I've ridden a new one. Now half my wooden top 10 is GCI. They aren't anything huge or overbearing, just solid rides. I think the only GCI I don't enjoy even a little bit is Gwazi, and that probably has a lot to do with the PTC's and the absurdly slow crew that ride always seems to have. -
Most Overrated coaster?

^He's right about Diamondback. The best rides I had were in rows 5 and 6. You literally can't make yourself sit back down in your seat until it's halfway down the other side of the hill. And believe me, I tried! -
Mitch Hawker's Coaster Poll 2009!
Skycoastin Steve replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I hope you all did your civic duty in the wooden poll and voted Rampage nice and high. (OK, that was the last shameless plug of the thread, I promise!) Hopefully it gets back in the top 20 this year, last year was its first year EVER outside the top 20. -

Most Overrated coaster?
Skycoastin Steve replied to BlackWidow's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
^^Exactly. I don't say "Come ride Rampage at Alabama Adventures." Because that's not the name of the park. Just like I wouldn't say "Come ride Disaster Transport at Cedar Points." It's just something that irks me, especially coming from someone who really seems to enjoy the park. -

^^While I've never ridden Goudurix, it's my understanding from what I've read that it's the most ungodly rough ride on the face of the Earth. -
Most Overrated coaster?

^Just curious, but you DO know that there's no "s" at the end of Great Adventure, right? As the "#1 fanboy," that seems like something you should know. -
Most Overrated coaster?

^^I agree, Nitro isn't anything special at all. Plus this year it had that "B&M shimmy" that older B&M's tend to get. Took a little away from the ride. As far as B&M hypers are concerned, Apollo's Chariot and Diamondback are far better. -
^Doh! My mistake. This yellow font drives my eyes nuts sometimes. Still though, the point remains, it's year round. And it's Disney. If the Disney parks didn't have the Disney name and label attached to them, they wouldn't get 17 million visitors a year. Anyone who has children is almost required to take them to Disney at some point. International people come for Disney World because it's one of the most famous things about the United States to them. They could care less what kind of theming the park has. Internationals (the GP internationals, not enthusiasts) just know it's Disney. They don't look at a list of parks and think, "Hmmm, Disney World has the best theming of any park in America, I think I'll go there!" Either way, you can't fault CP for not having much theming when it NEVER has referred to itself as a theme park. CP is what it is, an amusement park. It's one of the cleanest, safest, and best operated parks in the country, not to mention it has just about the best single-day ticket price value anywhere. It also has one of the best maintenance departments anywhere. If MF was at a Six Flags park and had the lift cable snap, it would have been down for months. CP had that thing back up inside of a week's time (if I remember correctly).

Park Pet Peeves
Skycoastin Steve replied to MSLSM's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
^But of all the pet peeves listed, I don't think I do any of them. I don't jump queues, I don't stop walking for no reason in the middle of a midway, I don't talk loudly about things of which I have no idea while waiting in line, I don't step all over people's feet in front of me in line, I don't smoke, I follow all rules. It's really not that hard. -
The fact that Magic Mountain is in the Los Angeles market (9-10 million people) and it's open year round has A LOT to do with the attendance numbers. You can't just look at the raw number and say that it's more popular just because it has higher attendance. As far as true seasonal parks are concerned, I believe the only park with higher attendance than CP is Canada's Wonderland, and that's in Toronto's market. EDIT: 10,000th reply!
-
^So if CP took down their world-class coasters in favor for a more family-friendly, themed atmosphere, you're saying those 3.5 million people that go there yearly would increase because the GP really cares that much about theming? The GP goes there for 400-, 300-, and 200-foot coasters, not theming.

Park Pet Peeves
Skycoastin Steve replied to MSLSM's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Reading this thread is almost giving me a stroke. Everything about the GP annoys me. -
^Nobody considers Cedar Point to be a run down park, and it's almost devoid of any theming. Would Millennium Force be a better ride with a 6-minute preshow and some crazy person on a video screen screaming at you about how "the future is riding on it"? No. A great ride speaks for itself. You don't need cartoony people, an insane amount of way too loud midway music, and a dancing bald man to make your park more exciting. I'd rather feel the atmosphere of being at a park where you can hear the rides and take in the experience without a million attention-whoring gimmicks screaming at me. And sure, nobody can touch Disney's theming, but I frackin' HATE going to those parks. Disney wears thin after about the age of 11.
-
Too much money is spent on theming. Just make a high-quality ride and it will scarcely even need it. Theming is just a crutch for an average quality ride (in most cases). SF spent what, $10 million each? on refurbishing the Bizarros. El Toro was built for just over $10 million. Get the point? If you're willing to spend all that money to repaint a ride, put crap in the way, and put REALLY loud speakers that pipe sound that you can't even hear because of the ride, why not build a whole new ride all together? Or better yet, if you don't want to build a new ride with that money, make capital improvements?

What song are you listening to?

"Stellar" by Incubus -
Left lane drivers and people who drive 15 mph UNDER the speed limit on the interstate. If I had a tank, I would trample over every single one of them.
