Been on the one at SFGAm. Pretty boring compared a real Jumbo Jet (or a Jet Star I or II for that matter). The only thing in common is the seating and the spiral lift. Whizzer meanders in between trees, where the Jets (all 3) take dives down to the ground level threating to take off your arms at the elbows if they're hanging out to far. As far as "Pony Express" is concerned, I am amazed at how many people are already saying what a boring ride it is, or will be, having never ridden it. "It looks boring." "It's too short" "If it's a family coaster, why is the height requirement at 48", not 42"? " Jaguar IS a family coaster, and has had a 48" minimum for years now, and that is sitting in seats with a back and sides. Yet, how many of you complain about that?? I'm so glad so many of you are designers and can know exactly what a ride will feel like and ride like just by looking at a couple of the artist renderings? Quit your damn whining people! Because you're REALLY annoying! Until your name appears on the blueprints, or the patents, or signs the checks for those who will design, build and operate the ride, SHUT UP.

TPR 2008 Trips! Download the flyers here!
OldJJman replied to SharkTums's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
In all seriousness, it's just a vacation. Having been on a few trips overseas with TPR, the "culture" credit is minimal at best. The most amount of "culture" I've ever encountered would have to do with the various meals. (The Brits would say the bars, but that's another story.) It's been well documented that Elissa is a picky eater, so that didn't happen too often. We try and stay in "western" style hotels, with "western" style meals. Yes, you can venture off on your own (and many do/have), but don't miss the bus, train or plane, or you will be left behind. It is a vacation to visit amusement parks, with minimal sightseeing on the side. That "minimal" being whatever we have time to do in the evening AFTER we've been to said parks. Sometimes, we'd get back from parks at 11pm with a 6am departure time. It's hardly a cultural experience. JJ -

You do understand that the "Jeff counts this as XXX credits" is getting old. However, "Fire, Hot" is timeless!! Strangely enough, I am really curious about the laser toting cats!! Good stuff Dave! JJ -

Mitch's Coaster Poll

I really like the out-of-control rides followed by the ejector air. I also love fantastic endings like that. I still have Texas Giant at #15 for those reasons. Other GCI's of note: 11. Kentucky Rumbler 13. Troy 16. Renegade 17. Thunderhead The rest are at 39 (roar- SFA) and below. -

Big Mike would! (and, for the record, it was only $21.50 this past summer! ) In the enthusiast world out of all the people I know, or have even heard of, no one has managed to hit the 2 woodies in India. Not even certain people from the ACE EC, riding on your average ACEr's dime, has managed to get those. Getting those would truly give someone the title of credit whore. Side trip Elissa? -

I just don't understand the whole credit whoring thing. I mean, why spend 100's, maybe 1000's of hard earned dollars to take a leisurely vacation, and end up in some gawd forsaken hellhole, just to ride a coaster made for children?? It makes no sense. Like Robb said, who would actually drive an extra hour just to ride a kiddie coaster in the middle of nowhere? That money and time could be better spent on a nice meal in a relaxing restaurant. You people are crazy! Oh, Elissa, DIE! -

The Sky's the Limit

That's a very valid point. Unfortunately, that is also the perception of your average park goer. Bigger/Fastest is always better. I did a quick search on RCDB for the top 10 tallest coasters, and the top 10 fastest coasters. Having ridden all of the coasters on both lists, except for Tower of Terror (S:TE clone) at Dreamworld, I can say (at least for me) taller and faster does NOT make for a better ride. The only coasters in my top 25 steel coasters would be Xcellerator at #23 and SD2K at # 25. Give me speed combined with great airtime and laterals and changes of direction, then IMO you have a great coaster. JJ -
Getting stuck on a ride!
OldJJman replied to disneygurlz2s's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
A couple of years ago, I went with some friends on a credit run weekend to several parks in NJ and DE. We got stuck on the lifthill of J2 (Tsunami) for about 30 minutes. The ride-op came running up the stairs, telling us not to panic! It was hilarious!! It took a couple of minutes, but we finally convinced him to take our picture. (I'll post it as soon as the site lets me. It's giving me a FTP error message) (L to R) Chris Trotter, Sean Flaharty, Myself, Bill Berkey, on J2 with the SBNO Jack Rabbit in the background. -

SFNO/Jazzland Discussion Thread
OldJJman replied to SharkTums's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I SERIOUSLY doubt that. Before I had gone there in early August of 2001, (It was still Jazzland back then) I had been told to get there soon, as the park was ALWAYS dead, and would probably fold or be sold. When we scheduled a trip there, we ended up going on the first Saturday in August. As we had been told, it was dead. There were less than 60 people thru the turnstiles by 1pm when we left. I know, because we asked. We rode Megazeph about 20 times, good ride! The problems we encountered were the fact that it was gawd-awful hot (109) and NO trees or any kind of shade throughout the park. All concrete makes for a bad time. Very minimal a/c in the restaurants and souvenir shops. Everyone that I have talked to since that time had pretty much the same experience. Light to no crowds, anytime of the season. ONLY enthusiasts would make SFNO a destination. New Orleans, in and of itself, is the draw in that region. No amusement park, apart from possibly Disney, could (or would) survive in that demographic. Though they would never even consider a location with such a weak demographic base. A waterpark, no matter how glorious, would not have brought in the needed $$$ to save that park, as waterparks generally depend on repeat (season pass) customers. Again, the demographic would NOT have suported this place. Especially so far from the main part of the city of New Orleans. All a waterpark would have done is postpone the inevitable. Jazzland was dying. SF bought it. SFNO was dying. Katrina came. It made the decision to close the park and sell off (or move) it's VERY FEW remaining assets that much easier, thus saving SF probably many millions in losses over a very short time. Katrina just made a difficult decision for SF that much easier. JJ -

Five weeks ago I probably would have said Canyon Blaster, maybe even Tennessee Tornado (kinda short), with a big nod to Big Bad Wolf (best at night). However, after the TPR trip to Korea, I could pretty much safely say: Eagle Fortress. Amazing. Simply amazing. (Fantasia Special would probably be up there too!) -

OldJJman replied to Groteslurf's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I'm guessing you mean me. Well, I live in SoCal so those parks are close. I did a 3 day weekend trip in June to the midwest. You can find my trip report here: My Midwest trip report Then I went on the TPR Spain trip, plus the add-on to Germany and the Netherlands. You can find my trip report here: Jeff's Spain TR I also went on the TPR Japan trip, plus the add-on to Korea. I haven't done a TR, even though I took over 4200 pictures. I don't know if I will either. I've also been at my job (mailman) for 24+ years, so I get 5+ weeks of vacation per year. Jeff -
Don't forget a "Cooking with Joe" restaurant! Fires and/or severed body parts every 10 minutes!! Also included is "Dave's Musical Circus Sideshow". A dark ride that, once you're seated and buckled in, restraints cannot be removed until you have seen 8 different death metal bands play.
