Kings Dominion (KD) Discussion Thread

Its a fine ride, a bit rough but still good. Can't wait to get to the park this Saturday for my final trip. Apparently Volcano will be getting new trains next season as well. Yeah that's what I hear as well. Most likely they'll have integrated seating mounts instead of the bolt together mounts much like the rehab that Voodoo's train recieved this season....still I'm more looking forward to the flats from GL,especially that ferris wheel. -
Why does it not suprise me?after all SFNE is Shapiro's favorite in the chain just because he's got family up there which shouldn't be an excuse to spoil that park rotten while deliberately ignoring ours year after year. All we'll see next season is the removal of Two Face & a nice empty spot that'll be filled in by a show stage or character dressing room instead of a replacement ride .Shapiro & Snyder don't give a rat's rear end about the park & want to see it fail so they can have an excuse to close it in the manner that CF was ultimately forced to do with GL last season.

The building they used to have the haunted house in burned down. Too bad it didn't take Roar along with it. KDfansite has posted the results of their Q&A with park management recently & it revealed some interesting tidbits about the park,as well as confirmed the f act that multiple attractions are planned for the 2009 season. -

LOL,while they're at it CF should contribute the cash for the budget to include Hurler north,as well as south in that plan......now that's a cap ex plan that represents money well spent. Forget the marhsmallows,I'll bring my trusty chain saw. -
The Rumor / Crazy Idea Superthread
KDCOASTERFAN replied to Wes's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Well that has been the latest rumor circulating around some of the KD sites lately, although we have to get through 09 (and our new goodies from GL ) first before we find out anything definitive about the rumored project. Looking at the photo of track at the plant in Ohio & combining it with what we know now about DB it looks like those yellow supports are for DB's lift & if you think about it the difference in the lighting from left to right in the photo makes it look like bright red track when it could very well be just more of DB's track waiting to be shipped out. -

It wasn't always that bad,I'd been a passholder there for 9 years & prior to the SF purchase & re-branding of the park Premier was actually investing money into the place & fixing it up from what the WW management had made of it in the 80's....all that changed of course by 2002 when SFI began to ignore the park in favor of spoiling SFMM,SFGRAM & SFGRADV rotten year after year with new rides. -

I don't think BGE is in any danger of closing it's doors, now SFA on the other hand I'm not so sure about at this point but it looks like they're probably headed in that general direction. Keep in mind that since BGE is in a high tourist area what with colonial Williamsburg nearby the park is always going to draw a lot of business from that segment of the market, still KD has a healthy market to draw from especially once people in the DC area become dis-satisfied with the way that SFA is being run within the next few years. -

KDCOASTERFAN replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
What I was trying to say is that Cedar Fair could sink lots of money into KD in an effort to force SFA and BGE to spend a lot too, just to keep their share of the market. We know that SF isn't in a position to do this now or probably not in the near future. I don't think they could run BGE out of business simply because it is an award winning park. But InBev could change that if they keep the parks but don't run them like AB has. They clearly have stated they have next to no interest in them already. If they sold them back to the Busch family and they took over would they still be able to keep them up like they do now? BGE has been averaging a major attraction about every 5-7 years, could they build every 2 if CF put the pressure on? Keep in mind that they wouldn't have all that beer revenue backing them up. Just my thoughts and just my $0.02 but I think Cedar Fair has big plans for KD. I mean they either ran the competition or bought out the competition in Ohio and its working well for them so why not try Virginia now. KD has made plenty of improvements even during the paramount era in recent years & what has SFA done? they've removed several rides & have only added one water ride to the theme park side & that was five, going on six years ago so SFA isn't really a threat to KD at all but BGE might be however. I agree that CF has big plans for KD,they have a huge market share to cater to with the DC/Northern VA. market alone as well as the Richmond area to work with, and that's a lot of people...which in turn means a lot of potential revenue for the company. -
Kings Island (KI) Discussion Thread
KDCOASTERFAN replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Don't forget,it's up to the parks to determine the color scheme of the finished ride, not B&M...the factory simply paints the track & structure in the requested colors as ordered by the customer. Dominator recieved a nice new coat of orange & blue this year to replace the original yellow & blue of the SF era so Behemoth wasn't the only one.Still why did KI select the SAME shade of red used on Firehawk? -

KDCOASTERFAN replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I agree that this will be the MAJOR factor in KD's expansion plans but I also think Cedar Fair is gonna dump quality dollars here simply because they'd love to force the competition (SF & AB) to either keep up or close shop. Looking at Six Flags' right now doesn't bode well for SFA at all and who knows InBev's plans for BGE. Two prime competitors within 75-100 miles of KD and a chance to put them both out of business...CF has got to love those odds. They both may go under on their own and that could lead to KD becoming "The Point" on the east coast. Well unlike SF,CF isn't in too bad a shape to start with so once the economy recovers from this crisis business should begin to improve....the way I see it SFA doesn't really need CF's or KD's help in going out of business as the powers that be at SF's corporate HQ have pretty much sealed that park's fate from the minute Shapiro took over & started making a bad, underfinanced park even worse. Now if KD has plans for a major coaster come 2010 then those plans are already being finalized & put into action as of now, they've already spent millions on the design work & contracts with manufacturers to turn back now, that is assuming that such a project is in development of course. -

We can hope. I am sooo jealous of KI with Diamondback! I think KD has plenty of space for expansion and in fact NEEDS some sort of signature coaster. Dominator is a great ride, but that kind of coaster just does not work as a signature ride. You put a Diamondback clone in there, call it "Copperhead" or something, and you have great photo ops for years to come. The theming takes care of itself by using the wooded areas as much as possible. Also, as classic as some of the woodies are at KD, I could see them possibly getting rid of one to make some room and re-use some good wooded real estate. It's been 12 years since I rode The Grizzly and it nearly beat me to death back then. I can't imagine it's gotten any smoother. Just a thought. Regardless, if Diamondback is a big hit at KI this coming season, I'd say KD has a shot at something similar in the next few years. oooh no... Grizzly is easilly one of the best coasters in the park, definitely the best woodie in the park. I would hope Hurler and even Rebel Yell goes before Grizzly. Honest question. When do you think the park will receive another major addition? With a bit of TLC Rebel Yell can return to being a somewhat decent ride,Hurler(aka firewood) is a LOST cause however so if any of the woodies needed to go Hurler's the one. I'm pretty sure that KD's next "major" addition may very well come along in 2010....look at how CF has paced out the major additions at KI every two seasons as an example with Firehawk in 07 & Diamondback coming in 09,but then again getting three decent flats(I just love the fact that they're adding GL's ferris wheel) would also count as a major addition don't you think? -

Not too bad & your other creations look pretty good as well.I think I may DL the spinball scramble or whatever it's called as that looks to be a fine ride. I noticed in one of your screens the ferris wheel in the background. Is that from NL Fairground? if so it looks like I'll have to buy the full version as the demo had a missing .dll file in it that I wasn't gonna bother trying to replace. -

Well whenever you visit a theme park part of the process involves standing in long & sometimes slow moving lines....both for rides as well as for food & admissions. -

Well they did make a change to the front entry plaza by removing many of the old ticket windows that were there so that's a start but there's not much that can be done to expand the number of entry turnstiles unless they were to widen the I-street midway first. -
Brazilian SLC Construction
KDCOASTERFAN replied to LuccasCBMR's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I'm suprised that the park is able to take such good care of it when one of KD's main reasons for it's removal way back in 1986/87 was due to maintenance issues as well as overall maintenance costs. Hopefully the new SLC you're recieving down there will run reliably & smoothly. The first half of the course isn't all that bad but from the sidewinder on it get's pretty rough but if they'd just remove those darn ear flaps from the top of the restraints then maybe it'll be more tolerable. The invertigo uses a similar restraint but is suprisingly smooth(especially when new) mainly due to the re-design of the wheel assemblies, unfortunately we're about to loose the invertigo at SFA in MD. thanks to all of the malfunctions it's had in recent years....I'm crossing my fingers that perhaps KD will purchase it,give it a good rehab & stick it in the park somewhere but I'm not about to hold my breath waiting for that to happen. -

I think you've gotten KD mixed up with a certain SF park up north in your home state that won't be getting anything anytime soon. KD has ALWAYS brought in money, and the crowds for the various companies that have owned & operated the park since it opened in 1975 & CF recognizes this....there were plenty of days this season where the park was filled to capacity & they actually had to turn people away so that definitely means that they're doing something right & with numbers like that new additions are gonna be necessary in the coming years to spread out the crowds & give them more to do. -

Back in the day Katapul started out as King Kobra at KD here in virginia,it was only one of two coasters in that park's history that I never got a chance to ride. As for why some SLC's & Boomerangs are rougher than others: it has to do with maintenance, and with the way the wheel systems of the trains are designed/engineered. -

If KD is getting a coaster(as rumored for 2010) then the design/layout & manufacturer have already been chosen by CF by now & we can only speculate on what it might be....remember,it takes a good couple of years to design a new coaster from concept to finished product so if we are getting a new ride in 2010 then most of the design work has already been completed by now. Grizzly is still a decent ride, now if any woodie in the park were eto go I'd give my vote to Hurler hands down & by removing that piece of firewood it would give the park a little bit more room to work with. -

I for one am glad they chose to drop it because it would've been just as much of a failure as SOB turned out to be.Now a new hyper,be it a B&M or an Intamin would be a welcome sight at the park because they really need one. -

KDCOASTERFAN replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
You know, after looking at all of the updates on Diamondback construction going on at KI I think a B&M hyper may very well be a possibility within the area behind Rebel Yell.Diamondback will feature a rather steep lift for a B&M so as to clear many of the attractions/structures that occupy it's footprint. Of particular interest on Diamondback is the peculiar supports for the base of the lift, instead of being bolted to the underside of the spine it's bolted together one on each side. Now if B&M can do a steeper than normal lift to fit the terrain limitations at KI then I'm sure that it's a possibility for KD's rumored 2010 project....I'm just not satisfied with the new mega train design that B&M has since created for their hypers & would prefer their standard four abreast trains instead for KD's coaster. -

KDCOASTERFAN replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Could be due to the massive scale of the project & they want to get as many supports up as possible, they could also always start at opposite ends of the coaster & work towards the middle to make the project go much faster. Seeing the rather steep lift gives me hope that KD's rumored 2010 project(if it comes to pass) may turn out to be a B&M since they'd need a steep lift angle to get the ride to fit in the only possible location within the park. -

Good that you downloaded it. I look forward to seeing some of your tracks! Also, it is version 1.7, not 7.1. Especially considering 2.0 is what this thread is about. LOL,I goofed on the version #.I havn't really experimented with the track editor yet especially seeing as how I can't even find a track/ride type selection menu anywhere in the editor's user interface. I ohh so need to find some sites that have in depth tutorials on basic ride construction for the game before I attempt any major designs first.
