Mitch Hawker's Coaster Poll 2009!
therooboy replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Couldn't agree more rcdude. Initial overseas trips i really only looked at the bigger parks & what they had to offer & missed some great coaster opportunities. Thankfully now we have great resources like TPR & Mitchs Poll to give us a far better idea of where the good & not so good coasters are. -
Interestingly I will visiting Gary later this year. I am NOT staying there. A Michael Jackson Museum/Theme Park has a huge chance of success due to the legions of international fans & subsequent potential visitors. Graceland & Dollywood suggest it could be a very successful longterm venture. Neverland as the theme park & Gary with a Museum made more sense to me, but good luck, Gary. You need it (luck & the MJ stuff). I'll be there if it happens.

I ranked all 3 in my top 20, Heibe Fahrt just ahead of the others at 7. -

Good to see Anubis ranked in between Winjas & Heibe Fahrt, my other favorite single car coasters. -
Mitch Hawker's Coaster Poll 2009!
therooboy replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
A couple of the Aussie coasters had 12 riders, but were left out off the rankings ?? Even more surprising is our great Intamin "Superman Escape" with only 9 riders voting, whereas the very average Cyclone at Dreamworld got more votes in -
The extra crowds are worth putting up with for their Halloween shows & Haunted Holiday Mansion. One of my favorite times ever at a park. Good luck, hope your dates work out. I would like to also add that i used the guide from here, on TPR, for my Tokyo trip & it was of enormous help. Most parks were easy to get to by public transport.

Coasters at Night
therooboy replied to Erik Johnson's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Reading alot about the Beast being rougher nowadays. Its location makes for a nice ride at night. But it seems the ride itself gets no better as the day goes on. Unlike many of the other woodies listed here. Poor Beast. That was the coaster i saw in the school encyclopedias back in the 80's & imagined travelling & riding it & other coasters one day & i did finally ride it in 2004. It sounds like i may get a completely different ride this year. On the otherhand the many mentions of Boulder Dash & Bizarro have me very excited. -

Alot of great examples. Do B&Ms improve on their airtime, like intamins seem to do? [fingers crossed in hope here]. The only one i found improved was Apollo, but that could have been perceived improvement, due to the gushing wind & rain they let us ride in. Best B&M mega ride to date though regardless. -

Thanks for linking this to an older thread. Woodies & Intamins sounding like the most improved airtimers. BTW My favorite ride that improves as the day goes on is Expedition GeForce. I rode it at opening, the first time i visited, & liked it alot. But I didn't really get why so many people would rank it No.1 over say Goliath at Walibi. But as the day got on, the airtime increased & i understood exactly why. -
Coasters at Night

Thanks. I was mainly drawn to this by the amount of woodies getting far better reviews at night . It got me interested if there was a certain brand, age, or is it random. Terrain elements at night are great, but i was more thinking about the actual ride improving. I hadn't read many rave reviews about steels improving to the extent people mention some woods like Boulder Dash. I thought it would be also be handy for all to have a list of peoples favorites in the one thread. More please -

Which coasters run & ride majorly better late in the day. I'm trip planning for the states this summer & have noticed this in various parks threads for some of my destinations, but don't see a specific thread. Oops i posted this in Ask Alvey, but its probably better placed in the main forum. Can you move it for me please. -
Photo TR of four Australian Parks
therooboy replied to capnkyle1's topic in Photo Trip Report Archive
Thanks for this great report especially my homepark, Luna Park in Melbourne. You didn't miss much in the Ghost train. Trust me. Its more historical than anything good. Queenslands Movie World & its 2 good coasters are by far my favorites here too. Good enough to fully excuse them for Lethal Weapon. Not the worst SLC ive ridden but its still an SLC -
PKI Jizzman. Wanna swap living arrangements & i'll come live in Ohio for a year. BTW this trip has had a final addition. Now hitting Indiana Beach. Definitely not NE

It's the end of a decade as we know it....
therooboy replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
- Favorite new coaster Goliath [Walibi World] - Favorite new non coaster ride Tower Of Terror Tokyo - Favorite new park Tokyo Disney at Sea - Most memorable park moment My partner guessing the answer for fastest finger at California Adventure on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire & being in the "hot seat". FYI the question was "name the four bearded presidents in order of service" - Most memorable coaster moment For my trip to the USA in 2002 i had pencilled in as THE highlight riding X. Waiting outside Magic Mountain at 730am to ride X in 2002 for the first time. Watching it go on countless tests. Then rushing up to it on opening time, getting the first ride of the day. Awesome. Then while "beating" the crowd doing a lap of the park ,X broke down & went into months of rehab. I had 3 days planned for there .but ended up flying to NYC & Six flags Great Adventure & that made up for it nicely. - Least favorite coaster Santa Monica West Coaster. LA should represent their famous Pier way better. - Least favorite park Dreamworld Gold Coast & Great America CA were the most disappointing, but i'd still revisit both. - Most interesting ride you've seen introduced X, Spiderman & Valhalla - Least interesting ride you've seen intoduced More SLCs in parks, thanks not! - Your favorite TPR moment (favorite post, trip report, video, whatever!) Your first Tokyo trip posting. - The decade's biggest flop Son of Beast. - The decade's biggest success The great coaster designs. Primarily by Intamin, B&M, Gerstlauer, Mack & The Gravity Group, but many others too. A great decade in innovation. Also have to note Tokyo Disney at Sea again & Islands Of Adventure for their great themed parks. - Best park queues Walibi World & Holiday Park in Europe, for the first few hours no or very little queues for Goliath & Expedition Geforce both years i visited. Also Geauga Lake my first visit was not long before it closed. I think there was 100 people in the entire park & it was the middle of summer. - Worst park queues Fuji Queue - What was the biggest trend of this past decade? New coaster designs. Flyers, Spinners, Divers, the new woods, water coasters, compact coaster designs to name just some. -
Mitch Hawker's Coaster Poll 2009!
therooboy replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Thanks for the explanations guys, I am glad i asked. I rate it due to my own memories in 2006 when it was brand new & I rode it. Was considering going back to Fuji Queue one day primarily for this ride (as it's closer & cheaper for me than SFMM) but sounds like i'll be glad i haven't. Will now stick with X2 for my 4D coaster rush. I use the poll (with many other resources) as a rough guide in determining my trip plans so to hear information such as this is very useful. -
Mitch Hawker's Coaster Poll 2009!
therooboy replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
But that's just the thing, more people DIDN'T ride it as it was closed the entire year. All those people who went to Everland on the ECC trip didn't get to experience the #2 steel coaster in the world! --Robb "Which is why I think many of them were bitter and chose to not like T Express as much just to spite the park." Alvey Not the only coaster that suffers due to park impressions. Unfortunate, but going to happen. Eejanaika will no doubt yet again be ranked 200 spots below its twin X2, due to past Fuji Queue memories. The main thing is hopefully all the great coasters are at the top & the not so good ones are at the bottom. -
Thanks for the help. I have finalized my parks plans & decided to drive a bit further inland & visit King Island & Holiday World, & omit Great Escape.
-
After checking Idlewilds announcement & hearing this, i might give that one a miss. Ryes Playland Parks Super Flight & Dragon Coaster have me interested. I'll put it in the maybe file. I always scan the relevant threads then ask the forum before i finalise a big trip & you guys always seem to add a few things every trip i probably wouldn't have. Klotten immediately comes to mind. So thanks.
-
Thanks guys Sorry if my thread title was misleading, I knew Ohio was midwest, but thought the rest would be NE, my mistake, should i change the title? I will check out Ryes Playlands site & also didn't know Niagara had some coasters along it, except the parks i'm visiting nearby. We will be staying in/around major cities mostly. NYC around 10 days & Boston, Niagara, Toronto, Sandusky, Washington DC & somewhere undecided in Pennsylvania for roughly 4-5 days each. Maybe stay in Virginia instead of DC, but not sure. Definitely going to both. Plenty of time for fun, sightseeing & coasters. Lakemont is on my "we'll see how we go" list. I know it's not far from Kennywood & Idlewild. Considering possibilities of King Island (which i've been to) & Carowinds (which i have not), but realise they are a a bit out of the way. I'd say i'm a reformed credit whore. Stuff like SLCs are now walked past happily with ease. I would rather queue & reride a good ride. I also like to visit the really good parks even if there are no top coasters. I really enjoyed Efteling, even though no coasters there is outstanding. Its one of the best parks i've been to. If i've missed a park of that standard please let me know.
-
I'm coming to the US for 7 weeks next year (6 in the NE) & am planning a driving holiday, visiting all the significant coasters in that area during that time. My question is, am i missing any coasters that i shouldn't. I've only been to 4 of the NE parks before. Here is the parks i have decided on for summer 2010 Six Flags Great Adventure, Coney Island,Six Flags New England, Lake Compounce,Great Escape Splashwater Kingdom, Darien Lake, Martin's Fantasy Island, Canadas Wonderland, Waldameer,Cedar Point, Kennywood, Hersheypark, Dorney Park, Knoebels, Six Flags America, Kings Dominion, Busch Gardens Williamsburg & maybe Idlewild after their soon to be announcement. No order decided yet I will also be in LA for a week first, doing Magic Mountain, Knotts & the Disneys. Is anything missing?

Most Overrated coaster?
therooboy replied to BlackWidow's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I found Nitro & also Silver Star at Europa big let downs, especially after riding Apollo, which i really liked. Nitro had lots of slow floaty air but no real kick & began my disappointment at B&M megas. Hope Behemoth [2010 for me] is better. -
I just wanted to add a bit from the Australian perspective. In some states it is not a crime to have a small amount in your possession. In South Australia you can grow 1 or 2 plants at your residence without worry of persecution. On road drug driving tests for canabis & some other drugs are also in operation here, much like booze buses. They come up positive if you show a relatively high reading, suggesting recent intake. These laws were brought in to stop the many people from getting criminal convictions & to also free up court time. Though many do frown on the act, i'd say the general opinion here does not view it should be judged anywhere near harshly as some other drugs & certainly most don't see it as a criminal act.
