Poll: What do you base your ride rankings on?
ginzo replied to Olsor's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I try to base mine on my overall experience with the ride, but I give the most attention to the most recent ride. I think it's possible for almost any woodie to have a bad run, for whatever reason. If it's obvious, however, that the park has let the ride go to hell (something I despise), then the most recent ride becomes the entire basis for the ranking. I might even knock a ride down a bit for needing a paint job. There's no excuse for poor maintenance, not when soda is $5 and a slice of pizza is $7. -
Mitch Hawker's Wood Coaster Poll - VOTE NOW!
ginzo replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Because the other polls just count raw votes, which means that only rides at massive parks like Cedar Point win. Rides at parks like Liseberg are at a serious disadvantage, because they just don't get the number of visitors and consequently the number of raw votes needed to rank high. Your votes only affect rides that you've actually ridden, which means that you can't bring down the ranking of excellent rides that you just haven't gotten to ride yet. It's really not that complicated. It took me 15 minutes. And, I've never done it before. -

You just want to use the most barebones text editor that you have, which doesn't get all cute trying to add formatting and what not. The less features the better! The command line editor pico would be great for this, but I don't think Mac OS includes that in the standard install. -
what coaster did you severely underestimate
ginzo replied to methos's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Yeah, it's definetly a one trick pony. Though that one moment is one of the biggest WTF moments I've ever had. Agreed. It really looks like a nothing ride. That last drop doesn't even look all that special. But, it delivers one of the most terrifying coaster moments around. I really like rides that look lame, but wind up rocking, like Cornball Express. Who would have thought that little kiddie looking coaster wouid rock so much? -

Unfortunately, that drop is the only memorable part of that ride. The rest of it is mediocre at best. It is quite fun, though, to feel like you're going to get chucked right out of the coaster. -

Looked? Have you *ridden* either El Toro or Balder? The point of this poll is to rate what you've ridden. Just because something looks great doesn't mean it's a great coaster. And, just because something looks lame doesn't mean it sucks. -
Mitch Hawker's Wood Coaster Poll - VOTE NOW!

I made my gf vote. I think she's gonna mess the poll up. She put the Beastie (PKI) over a lot of top rated rides like, say, Thunderhead. Though, she said that if the poll had the new name "Fairly Odd Coaster", she wouldn't have ranked it all that high. Oh well. In case anyone didn't notice, the Voyage won the 2006 In-Season Woodie Poll. It beat El Toro by quite a bit in that, and slightly edged out Balder. I think Mitch has these results down now that the real poll is taking place. Personally, I prefer Avalanche @ Timber Falls over Voyage. I love that thing. I haven't ridden El Toro or Balder yet to compare it to those, but will ride El Toro next June. Voyage is a great ride, but too inconsistent to be #1 for me. -

What is the worst B&M/intamin/GCI
ginzo replied to christianscoasters's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Why does everyone hate Gwazi so much? I rode both sides last month in the front seats, night rides at Howl-o-Scream. It was pretty fun, and not too rough. I was a little drunk, but I thought it was a pretty good ride, not bad like everyone says. -

A Final Day at PKI!

I miss that ride. It was so much better than Chang. -
That's the most plausible reason. And, I'd be more apt to accept that explanation than, "Maxx Passes are new". Still, they've had several months to get this ready. The db for this shouldn't be all that complicated. But, of course, large companies take forever to get anything done, even relatively simple projects.

I'd love to see Dollywood built out to a full loop. Although I understand that the park is right in the middle of what used to be mine country, I do think that having 3 mine themed rides would be pushing it. Dollywood already has a lot of family oriented rides, just not coasters so much.
-
What exactly did you have in mind? A mine train comes to mind, but that wouldn't be a good idea as they already have the mine thing covered with Mystery Mine and Blazing Fury. Blazing Fury is a pretty good family-oriented hybrid ride. I'm all for more coasters, but Dollywood is pretty packed as it is. Where would they put it?

Thank you. I think I'm just going to call Knott's ahead of time. I imagine this Maxx Pass thing will run smoother in the years to come. Another thing that concerned me was that my 2006 parking pass was attached to my 2006 Gold Pass. I wonder if they even bothered to carry that over to the cardboard temporary pass. This isn't that big of a deal as today is the last day of the season, and I'm not going.

Yesterday, we had to wait in a massive line for about 30 minutes to get our Cedar Fair Maxx Passes processed at PKI. I assume it's the free parking, which you only get if you process by today that created the crowd. Anyway, after waiting and getting our picture taken, the lady hands us these little pieces of cardstock. *Temporary* Cedar Fair Mass Pass. And, she took our 2006 Season Gold Passes. So much for souvenirs! Yes boys and girls, we have to go back in the Spring and possibly wait in line again to swap these glorious pieces of cardboard for the real deal. Now I'm going to Knott's in January, and would like to have more than cardstock in hand. Does anyone know the reason why they didn't just issue us our real 2007 passes on the spot? The fact that Maxx Passes are new is a really poor excuse. It's a piece of plastic. You print it, and viola!

PKI Fear Fest last fling
ginzo replied to jamesdillaman's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
It actually turned out to be OK. The wind died down. It wasn't too cold, provided that one was dressed appropriately. A *lot* of rides were shut down today due to the winds. Even after the winds died down a lot of the rides did not reopen. -

I've also had massive problems with discount store batteries. They don't hold a charge for anything. I wonder if they're actually recharged batteries, like the homeless people in NYC try to sell you. However, I do use 9V batteries from Family Dollar in my smoke detectors. They're 2 for $1, and they seem to work ok. My smoke detectors all beep like crazy when the batteries run low anyway. -
Man shot at Universal Orlando's parking lot
ginzo replied to BarryH's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
There already is pretty stiff security at HHN. They search you when you come in. However, the search happens as you go into the park, not before you park. They don't search cars, nor are they allowed to. The parking lot is kinda a grey area. There was a shooting at SFOG this year, which also occured outside the park itself. There's not much they can do about it. There's a limitless supply of idiots out there. -

I have to agree with this one, alcohol shouldn't be served in amusement parks anyway, it's pointless. (Let the hate mail begin.) Unfortunately, Orlando has the stigma of competing with Las Vegas for the "Most visited tourist attraction in the country" title, and for some reason, Orlando business feels that alcoholics are the majority of spending tourists. But they have it wrong, it's the smokers that spend more money. Alcoholics and smokers are quite often the same people. BGT sells booze at Howl-o-Scream. Why don't they have as many problems? Maybe it's the smaller scale of their event, and everything is all spread out. HHN at UO seemed very packed in when I went. Drunken idiots packed into small space = trouble Isn't idiot watching part of the fun? -

Well, of course the beer didn't make them stupid. They were stupid to begin with. But, it's no big secret that people do incredibly dumb things under the influence of alcohol, that they wouldn't do sober. Why do you think there are so many bar fights? "Do they understand how most of what happens is people being drunk and stupid and trying to find something else to blame besides that makes their lives totally fuck3d? No, they don’t." -Al Swearengen I went to HHN at UO on Friday the 13th, had a great time, and there was absolutely no trouble. One of the highlights of the evening was some drunken frat boys trading insults with the T2 lady when she was doing the intro. She actually trash talked back. It was great. -
Apollo's chariot pumping on first drop?
ginzo replied to jmccalip's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Last time I rode the Bull the drop under the lift was unusually rough for a Beemer. I rode it in the back seat twice in August, and it ran great. No roughness, or abnormal movements.
