coasterdude5
It pays to go through old family albums! My mom and my grandparents went to the park way back in 1971 when it was only about 3 years old. Sorry for the quality, I couldn't find my grandma's SD card.... Thanks for viewing. When was the globe taken out? They had some cool characters. The park had a nice entrance plaza... did it still look similar to this when it closed? I had never seen a themed Chance Toboggan before this. I'm guessing this is from the Astroneedle? astroworldfan1
The globe fountain was not there when the park closed in 2005. Another cool thing, was that bridge was not originally for walking on. Guests could board a tram and be transported to the gates. The gates really changed and they were updated. Astroworld was originally planned to get a new gate design for it's 40th birthday, but the money went to Six Flags New Orleans. These pictures were taken before Six Flags bought the park. Marvel McFey's friends are still there, and no Looney Toons. -Tatum
the ghost
That chance toboggan looked pretty cool. I heard those things kill you though. Awesome Pics.
ebl
^ I rode one at the L.A. County Fair once over 20 years ago. Once was enough, thank you... Eric
mike robinson
The Globe was removed in 1994. It was the 35th Anniversary that was supposed to get a new front gate and a major new ride. Two rides were in the works, one for the 35th and one for the 40th. A River battle Ride was on the drawing board for the lagoon area in the center of the park and a Hyper was being discussed also. (I believe Canada Wonderland benefited from that discussion) As it turned out, 2 easily moved rides were installed, SWAT and Diablo Falls to celebrate the 35th. This year would have celebrated 40 years of Astroworld. Great Pictures of the Swamp Buggy and everything else!! Thank You.

coasterdude5
Yeah I wonder if Shapiro had been in control during that time would he have done the same or sold the park to PARC...
esvadj
That chance toboggan looked pretty cool. I heard those things kill you though. Awesome Pics. Got 4 stitches in my head from the one in Ocean City MD when I was 18. I guess I was too tall to be on it. When the car came off the lift, I hit my head on the cage and split it open. coasterdude5
^ They probably had similar incidents at Astroworld...
astroworldfan1
I don't think they had those sorts of problems. The ride had a really low capacity and it was in a part of the park that was closed a lot. I don't think it got re-located anywhere, and I never got to ride it. It seems nice and not painful. Yeah right. Death machine = Swamp Buggy Ride! -Tatum

Yeah, those things can be worse than TOGO death machines. Never seen a themed one, though. I'm gonna take a guess that Astroworld is the one who themed it, not Chance. astroworldfan1
^Bingo. I loved the passion Judge Roy put into AstroWorld. I'm so mad I never got to revisit the park! You will be missed Astroworld. -Tatum
Skramp
I guess there is a new image up on Google Earth of Astroworld. Kind of interesting how there is nothing now. No concrete? No footers? All dirt? That was really fast!! All gone!!
Ccron10
Wow. For some reason that look very errie and strange. It's hard to imagine that the field used to be home to a great theme park.
