rvoice100
hi all what do you all think of our parks this side of the pond? i think they are a little naff compared to the states, especially with themeing, so just wanted your opinions, thanks
martinb
Alton Towers and Chessington has fantastic themeing, and you don't have to have themeing to have a great park, just look at Blackpool Pleasure Beach!
jamesdillaman
themeing is overated if you ask me, look at Italian Job at PKI, great themeing sure, but so-so coaster. I'd rather have good rides with no themeing than average rides with great themeing. -James

ncf
BPPB looks like a huge pile of garbage with all the old coasters on top of each other But I bet it's a great park
rollermonkey
Hmm, My first trip to the UK was... Interesting. I found it expensive and somewhat difficult to get around. I think if it weren't for the national bus lines, I'd have gotten right back on the chunnel! Thorpe was decent, and Colossus was still running nicely. Ground had just been broken on Nemesis Inferno. Blackpool is a long way from London, but a very nice park. The one thing I remember more than anything was freezing my kiester off while waiting for it to open! BPB has the best woodie collection in the world, rivaled only by Kennywood. Alton was a royal pain in the butt to get to using public transportation. A lovely park with fantastic coasters, but a bit lacking in the credit card acceptance! I didn't get to any more parks that trip as I was still trying to get around Europe a bit after. I do look forward to getting there in June!
ParkTrips
I hear it sucks and all the cool folks prefer jobs to the crappy UK parks. I also think the word "naff" may be my new favorite British-ism, and that Elissa will be in here soon to rub it in my face that I won't get to use that word amongst real live Brits. clarkerm
BPPB looks like a huge pile of garbage with all the old coasters on top of each other But I bet it's a great park How dare you! haha just kidding, BPPB does look like a pile of crap, but it's a great park. The Pepsi Max Big One is v. rough now IMO but maybe just worth it for the first drop - Back seat's amazing. The wild mouse is unreal and my favourite ride at the park. Revolution looks pretty standard but the drops are great! Hope you guys enjoy the time over here, I'll be at Port Aventura in June - Can't wait! Louise
Hmm, My first trip to the UK was... Interesting. I found it expensive and somewhat difficult to get around. I never think of Britain as being expensive until I actually look at/hear people talking about the price of things overseas. I guess because we're just used to paying what we do for things, it doesn't seem a big deal until you actually start comparing things. As for it being difficult to get around... Local public transport here (as in Manchester, I can't speak for other areas) is very good, it rarely bothers me that I can't drive as I can always get where I need to go on a daily basis with no problems. However, getting to out-of-the-way places can be very tough, and often expensive, hence my limited experience of many of our theme parks, it's just too pricey and complicated to get to a lot of places. Hence my being on the trip in June... I do kinda think comparing coasters/parks in different countries is slightly pointless, as was discussed in a USA vs Europe thread fairly recently, as there are good and bad parks on both sides of the pond. I personally think that in a lot of cases, the grass is always greener, things always seem more attractive from a distance. Paul, I think this has been posted a couple of times on the UK board, but just for you: http://www.peevish.co.uk/slang should have everything you need. (including naff, which as tinhead said, just means sucky.)
martinb
I remember Elissa saying once in another thread " I'd prefer a few world class coasters to a load of average coaster". And the UK has some world class coasters IMO, Nemesis, Grand National, Wild Mouse (Blackpool) Steeplechase, Nemesis Inferno, Dragons Fury. The only problem that the UK has is its lack of Hyper Coasters because nearly every park has height restrictions, the only park that doesn't have a height restriction is Blackpool Pleasure Beach and I don't think they have enough room for another one

Carnage
naff naff naff you dont have that word in the states?!? im coming over to orlando tommorrow for two weeks i will get the whole country saying it!!!! martinb
but dont you find all of our coasters see so short too? Yes, short but sooooooo sweet. It would be nice to have some long coasters, but aren't the majority of all the long coasters in the US covered in trim/bloke brakes? Thats another advantage of shorter coasters, shorter queues and your left buzzing like crazy when you hit the brake run.
Carnage
Most longer coasters in the US would have block brakes. Though that in itself isn't a negative. You'd have to look at spefic examples to determine that. Block brakes are more used to enable the running of more trains, which in turn creates more capacity. martinb
^ Yeah I know that but alot people don't like them. Just from looking at the specific cosaters I'd says that Goliath/Titan have the worst case of trim brakes, its huge and it has a trim brake after 3 drops, I know it helps with the capacity but whats the point in building a 250ft coaster if your going to slow it down after 3 drops! If the UK had everything there would be nothing to look forward to if you went to America and the other way round, America is like 20 times the size of England, that why they have much more coasters and parks. I'm sure if England was the size of America it would have just as many parks! I'm not saying this to slate Americans but I'm pretty happy with the quality of coasters we have here in the UK, we don't have many duplicates, like we only have 1 operation Boomerang, 1 standard SLC (& 2 custom), but I'm sure if the UK was bigger there would be many of these! America has many world class coasters, so does the UK, just not as many, so in other words the UK is just a small America.
