Park commercials from days past...

Recommended Posts

I remember growing up during the 80s and 90s, and seeing different ads for parks occasionally.

One that immediately comes to mind was one that Darien Lake put out in the years before they were bought by Six Flags. it was for the Predator on it's inagural year. This strange guy was moving down the river on a wooden raft saying stuff like "It'll throw you high!...it won't let up...it will track you down all right..." then it showed footage of this creepy monster growling, with images of the coaster going along the tracks...New York's largest wooden coaster is the PREDATOR!..."It will track you..down..." New, at Darien Lake!

I also remember seeing an ad for Dorney park from the early 90's, which had an interesting jingle...I'm gonna take the day off! At Dorney! Which I think of every time I hear about this park, to this day.

Anyone else remember any interesting park ads from years ago?

Oh geez...

- One for Disneyland in the late 80's that featured a Michael Jackson song. There was a shot of the Matterhorn Yeti in it, and it freaked me out, because for some reason I thought the Yeti was like 80 feet tall. I wouldn't ride the Matterhorn for years because I was afraid of the 80 foot Yeti.

- A jingle that went: "Six Flags Magic Mountaaaaaaaain...It's what the world should be!"

- Knott's changed the words of the Romantics song "What I Like About You" to "What I Like About Knott's/You Can Play All Day..."

The Oblivion advert which was screened in 1998 just before the ride opened. It was awesome and it had the perfect atmosphere for what was at the time a terrifying ride!

Even if Oblivion might be short compared to some newer coasters with a larger drop or better layout like SheiKra it's still a great coaster!

I remember the one for Kumba back when it opened...

It showed the coaster in the dark, made it really eerie, then said something along the lines of "New, In the dark continent, the fastest, tallest, and most twisted rollercoaster in the Southeast... Kumba, New at Busch Gardens, feel the Roar"

Or something to that extent

I remember another Darien Lake ad from the 90's, back when the "Nightmare At Phantom Cave" coaster, which now resides in The Great Escape as "Nightmare at Crackaxle canyon" first came along...it showed weird black and white footage of people riding on a coaster...

pray...

pray to be strong...

pray nothing goes wrong...

pray the phantoms aren't in charge...

lots of hype there, for the rotted coaster once known as "Starchaser" that Kentucky Kingdom didn't want anymore.

PKD's commercial for the Outer Limits: Flight of Fear was pretty good, with its creepy atmosphere and terrified riders being shook and banged against its OSRs while grimacing in agony--talk about capturing the ride experience.

I still remember the old "mad scientist" commercial Marriott's Great America ran when it introduced its launched shuttle loop:

Zee Tidal Va-a-a-a-ve!

And there was the California State Fair's irritating jingle from the 1970s:

"Come to State Fair.

"Fun everywhere!

"It's quite a sight to see!

"Come ride the monorail,

"And see the world below . . ."

Aghh! Even today it runs through my head!

AstroWorld had a great commercial that used the "That's Entertainment" song (with new lyrics about the attractions of AstroWorld). I'm not sure of the season, but I'm guessing around the time of Texas Cyclone opening, circa 1976, maybe a year or two earlier.

Would love to see it again. Our local TV stations probably have it.

The only old ride commercial I remember seeing was the one for Goliath (Sfmm) back in 2000. I remember it was pretty good and was one of the things that got me interested in coasters back in the day. For some reason I don't remember anything about advertising for Scream, X, or Deja Vu (was there any?)

I also remember a few Cedar Point commercials, one of them being a classroom full of kids, talking about these bizarre new hairstyles they all have, all of them being the result of riding one of the coasters at CP.

And I also see occasional commercials for SFGadv, and the one I remember most frequently was the one for when Viper opened...I couldn't believe that thing sucked, cause it looked soooooooo cool in the ads, with that ringed heartline spin and all.

Mine are a bit more recent, though...

*The annoying BGT commercial for Katonga! where that word is said about a zillion times.

*The preopening ad for SheiKra in which text was going by saying "200 feet up, 90 degrees straight down, SheiKra, coming in May!" I think BGTGuide has that ad somewhere.

*Then the ad used for SheiKra after opening. Basically it was a guy flying around in the sky until you suddenly see him pause. His arms then go to his side, then he turns face down and SHOOTS down to the ground. Then you see the guy wake up from his bed, then some fancy SheiKra footage.

*Radio ads for Cheetah Chase in 2004.

*The Gwazi ad, where it was nothing but roller coaster footage and text saying "combined speeds of 100 mph". Barely remember it, though.

I think my favorite commercial was for BGT back in the 90s. A kid was outside watering the lawn and Kumba sprung up.

I also remember the commercial for Batman, Batman and Robin the Chiller, Viper, Skull Mountain, Medusa, and vaguely Ultra Twister and Great American Scream Machine at Great Adventure. As much as Viper stank compared to its commercial, Skull Mountain was even more of a disappointment.
