I never film on a coaster. I'm not a pro and it generally is not allowed. I did media day at SFMM for my local TV station for Twisted Colossus. During the rides, I was struck by a cell phone. Let me tell you. It hurt!!! Is there any way to stress to the general public to NOT do this?

^ Unfortunately, I don't think loose articles on rides will ever truly be a thing of the past. I do wish all parks would be more strict about it if a guest is caught. Or at least fully enforce their strict policies.

Sure, there are ways to try to stress it to the general public, but as long as people feel the need to share every mildly interesting thing they do onto multiple social media platforms, people are going to be filming with their phones. Holding your phone up in front of your face like a jerkoff has just become a completely normal thing for most people (I still haven't bought into the "smartphone" trap, so I have an outsider's perspective, and believe me, it looks weird), so why not on a coaster?

 

What, my phone could become a deadly projectile? BUT I NEED TO UPLOAD THIS TO FACEBOOK!!?! How will anyone know I'm a super cool dude if I don't record video and share it over the internet?

 

Plus, there's no sense in added signage, these people's eyes are probably deadlocked onto their phones through the entire queue anyway!

People are terrible. Universal putting metal detectors at the rides will stop you from getting hit with a lot of things but still not everything. I *HATE* that parks are having to do stuff like that but I understand it because of humanity.

I actually wouldn't mind TSA-style full body scanners in front of rides. Especially if it meant we could get nice things like Dueling Dragons back. Sounds absurd, and has its drawbacks, but could probably work for the big resort parks. Don't want anyone seeing your anonymous flabby heiny? Fine, don't ride.

There's no perfect solution here. Universal's policy works better than most but at the same time it's a shame for people who aren't idiots and want to have their phone with them while standing in lines that can exceed an hour. At Cedar point we saw a ton of people playing games on their phones with their friends while in line (I don't know the game, basically you hold the phone up to your head and try to guess a word). Now people who just want to use it in line and then put it away (which describes the vast majority of people) have to suffer because of the people who take selfies while on a ride.

 

People suck.
