DiSab
Since I didn't find a topic about cycling, I figured I might as well start one. I'm not a professional cyclist by any means, but I do enjoy going out on a ride as often as I can. I've been riding on a big-ass mountain bike for a while, but about a month and a half ago I got myself a nice road bike. I must say, that thing rides so much easier than the mountain bike. Since I got it, I've put a little over 400 miles on it, and I'm hoping to ride a lot more before the weather gets really crappy here in the next month or so. I haven't ridden in any tours or anything yet, but I'm planning on doing a few next season (most of the ones around here are done for the year, so it's probably my best bet to look ahead to next year). I'm also going to try to ride the Pelotonia next year as well, as I've been wanting to do that for the past 2 years, but it just hadn't worked out that I'd be able to ride. Hopefully that will change next year. Anyone else have anything to share or discuss about riding?
LoneRider92
Living in Madison, WI (aka Best Bike City), I have clocked quite a few miles around the lake here. I find cycling to be a good, low-impact break from running daily. I am doing it at least once a week now until winter rears it's ugly head. Just yesterday I rode 25 miles and my goal is to ride 50 miles in a day. There is a path nearby that is 62.2 miles one way, so it may be something I check out in the future. I find it a fun way to get from A to B. There is nothing like whipping through the city on a sunny day. The only problem is wind. I have learned to hate even the tiniest breezes when I ride, and, going around a lake, they have become quite a familiar foe.
Angry_Gumball
Does riding a bike to and from work count? I just have a mountain bike, nothing expensive or fancy but I like it. I've taken it also to San Francisco and took on the hills to get up to a park where a yo-yo event was taking place. I also like to take it around my local lake as it has a variety of terrain and slopes.
the ghost
I have a Gary Fisher Pirhana with a few custom pieces like rat traps and modified breaks. I used to ride all the time, but haven't in forever because it's usually pretty hot here... but I think I am going to start again soon.
VinTheAttendant
I never really took up bike riding until I moved closer to my campus and no longer had to rely on public transportation. With my bike, I can leave my apartment a couple minutes later than I would have to if I walked. I own a street bike (is that what they're called?) that was made in either the late 80s or early 90s. It's a hand-me-down, but it rides just fine. You can actually get a really good speed with little effort.
ParkTrips
I bought a Cannondale Bad Boy a few months ago - rode it a few times a week over summer (sometimes for exercise, but mostly to bars, and to school a couple times too) and have not ridden it since probably August. I just don't have the time anymore. I love most everything about cycling - except that our sidewalks are not built for bikes, thus pushing us onto..... the road =/
johnychen
I been doing the MS150 ride for multiple schlerosis every year for over 17 years from Houston to Austin (about 180 miles in two days). Here's the link about the ride and my pledge link. main.nationalmssociety.org/goto/johnychen I started riding on an old converted mountain bike with slicks but that got too painful so I bought a short wheel recumbent. It looks like this one. Actionbent Jetstream The recumbent was nice an comfy but it was hard to balance so I went ahead and bought a recumbent trike. Most comfortable bike ever. The trike was great but it was a bit slower than a normal road bike. So I went ahead and bought a crank forward Rans Zenetik four days agao. They say its just as comfortable as a recumbent but has all the advantages of a road bike. Plus it's a good hill climber. Haven't had a chance to test it yet due to all the rain but will soon. STR8FXXXINEDGE
I love to ride bikes! Whether it's just cruising around town, riding muddy trails, or mountain biking. I love it all! I try to ride as much as possible. I was riding somewhere between 15 to 45 miles almost everyday, pretty much every summer, but this summer was a different story, as I was really busy. I've got a few different bikes and I have a wireless CatEye cycling computer that I can interchange to keep track of how far I'm riding. Love that thing! Here is a pic of me towards the end of last summer at the Michigan Forest Visiting Center - Old Growth Forest just before getting muddy in the Hartwick Pines trails. We were actually on our way up to cruise around Mackinac Island for the day, but the weather was pretty crappy, and you want to enjoy the island when it's beautiful out. So, we just decided to stop here and have fun with the off and on rain and take the challenge of the trails. It was a blast!
Angry_Gumball
Being a new year, I wanted to try something new. Yes it's still cycling, just short of a wheel, chain, and handlebars. I was at a thrift store earlier when I spotted this gem among the kiddie bike and trikes and thought I was seeing things. Immediately I snagged it and now I have something new to learn...that is, the unicycle! It's a vintage USA-made Schwinn probably made between the 60s and 70s, built pretty strong and was actually in excellent condition minus a few rust spots...nothing a little sand paper can't eliminate! Wish me luck on my unicycling adventures, great way to get through the offseason!.
johnychen
^ I actually saw someone ride a unicycle from Houston to Austin on the MS150 Bike tour. That's around 160 miles. He was pretty good and actually passed me going through the hilly parts.
Freefallbestrideever
Just starting back up, i bought a cheap cruiser and i also want to build another cruiser to convert to a motorized bicycle eventually (I saw the videos on youtube) I'm gonna head to the dump because i hear you can find decent bikes there, i just want to find a cheap road bike with gears so i can get into it for fitness. A cruiser/bmx is not really ideal for every day.
johnychen
Just completed a 48 mile training ride on my new Rans Crank Forward Zenetik. Still trying out different seat adjustments to see if I can get it extra comfy. My recumbent trike is still the most comfortable bike that I have ever ridden. Angry_Gumball
Last weekend I rode 150 feet on the unicycle. I went to go for another ride after adjusting my saddle height when gravity decided to turn against me as I fell backward and landed on my tailbone. Luckily nothing broke, just bruised but it hurt like mad...it did some good damage to my 'mo-jo' I had building up when riding as this past week, all of my rides have been puny 30-foot rides. Subconsciously, I keep thinking of "ZOMG I'm gonna fall off this thang!" while I'm fighting it telling myself to keep trying.
DiSab
Since this is cycling-related and doesn't really merit it's own thread, I'm posting it here. Any questions about it can be directed to me. Please consider helping!! -- I've decided to participate in an experience that raises funds for a great cause, and I need your help. Pelotonia is a grassroots bike tour with one goal: to end cancer. More than 10,000 supporters are expected to be a part of Pelotonia 12 on August 10-12, 2012. The ride will span two days and will cover as many as 180 miles. In its first three years, Pelotonia has attracted over 8,300 riders from 38 states, over 2,800 volunteers, hundreds of thousands of donors and raised $25.4 million for cancer research. In 2011 alone, a record $13.1 million was raised. Because operational expenses are covered by Pelotonia funding partners, 100% of every dollar raised is donated directly to life-saving cancer research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center-James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute. I am writing to ask you to help me raise funds for this incredible event. Large or small, every donation makes a difference. We all know someone who has been affected by cancer. One of every two American men and one of every three American women will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lives. By supporting Pelotonia and me, you will help improve lives through innovative research with the ultimate goal of winning the war against cancer. I would love to have your support, as this is truly a unique opportunity to be a part of something special. When you follow the link below, you will find my personal rider profile and a simple and secure way to make any size donation you wish. Think of this as a donation not to me, or Pelotonia, but directly to The OSUCCC-James to fund cancer research. Please consider supporting my effort and this great cause. My rider profile can be found at the following link: http://www.mypelotonia.org/riders_profile.jsp?MemberID=172792 Thanks for the support! Angry_Gumball
Did a pretty decent ride last Saturday. As an alternative to dealing with San Francisco traffic and whatnot, I decided to take my bike from the Civic Center BART station on up to Golden Gate Park to check out a yoyo contest going on at the Band Shell. Was quite a ride and actually wimped out going uphill (gotta love the steepness of Haight St.) Funny thing was that my brother zipped right on up the hills on his fixed gear bike while I struggled even with multiple gears. Guess its time I do more riding and get in shape!
