QuakerOaties Posted August 30, 2005 Posted August 30, 2005 Today was one of those coming of age experiences. It was the day that I had my four impacted wisdom teeth removed. My appointment was for 8:30am, a nice time since I could just kind of roll out of bed, get it over with, and spend the rest of the day healing. My dad drove me to the oral surgeon and before I knew it I was hooked up to a heart rate monitor and waiting for the IV. I was anxious about the IV due to my past history with blood tests so I shared my anxiety with the doctor. "No problem!" he said, and next thing I knew I was inhaling nitrous oxide. I still felt the IV going in, but I simply didn't care (and frankly, it was never the pain that freaked me out but instead the whole concept of a needle going into my forearm). Once the IV was in, the doctor immediately injected the anesthesia and the next thing I knew I was waking up and it was all over. There was gauze in my mouth, the nurse (or dental hygenist? I'm not sure...) was giving my dad care instructions, and I was on my way home. For the first hour I was very groggy. I kept spacing out and falling in and out of consciousness. Once I got home I took the gauze out and saw the wondrous sight of my mouth covered in blood. I immediately began applying ice packs to my cheeks and jaw. So far they have prevented any awful swelling. My dad made me scrambled eggs so that the percocet and penicilin wouldn't be the only things in my stomach. Unfortunately, since I could not (and still cannot) feel my tongue or lower lip, they were impossible to eat and I ended up spitting out a bloody mass that slightly resembled scrambeled eggs. Aren't you glad this isn't a photo TR? Luckily my Netflix movies came so I have spent my time as a mentally challenged teenager (I keep flicking my lower lip since I can't feel it...) watching Donnie Darko and A Dirty Shame. Next is LOTR, Return of the King! Overall, the experience has been fine so far and isn't reminiscent at all of horror stories I've read on the internet in the past week. I have very little pain (Most likely due to my age though... I got them out at the right time), the bleeding finally stopped, I'm lucid, and I'm eating. Unfortunately the narcotics are making me a bit sick, but I have yet to throw up! I'll be sure to keep you guys updated... Mark "I hope I feel good enough to go paintballing on friday!" Luskus
BelizeIt Posted August 30, 2005 Posted August 30, 2005 Getting those Wisdom teeth pulled is always great experience! Hopefully your taking Vicodin rather than Codeine, I believe that Codeine is more likely to cause upset stomachs.
SharkTums Posted August 30, 2005 Posted August 30, 2005 Good Luck!!! I didn't start to die till dinner time on the day I got mine out!
coasters 4 me Posted August 30, 2005 Posted August 30, 2005 When I got teeth out, they just injected stuff into my mouth to make it all numb. When it was fully numb, they got plyers and pulled it out. It was really creepy hearing the cracking od the tooth coming out. It is annoying the way you cant speak properly after you get it out. It doesnt lose it's numbness until a few hours. Anyway, hope it stops bleeding soon! Good luck!
Guest Posted August 30, 2005 Posted August 30, 2005 I hated my wisdom teeth being pulled out. I had just the novacaine, which was painful. I felt my teeth coming out, and it was just the worst sound possible. I also had a dry socket so I wasn't able to eat solid foods for about 10 days. I was on percocets and vicodens, it was awful. I now hate dentists. I refuse to go, this guy was soooo not cool and didn't care how I felt. I had mine all impacted, and they wouldn't knock me out, but my friends was the same and she got the anthestic. Meh, they are out thank god no more pain. Hope you feel better. Try cream of chicken soup, it helps with your mouth or mashed potatoes. Very thin ones. Katie
Kroger8 Posted August 30, 2005 Posted August 30, 2005 I had mine taken out on August 12th. And I felt exactly the same way as in having the IV in, you have laughing gas, and you feel it, but you just really don't care what happens. I think having braces really prepares you for the not-being-able-to-eat-because-of-pain part though. And Mark just remember to keep the "Pot-holes" cleaned out, you will be surprised what gets in there! I think its the third day that you have to start using the syringe... It gets old having to have your teeth worked on so much... Daniel "Hope nothing else happens with my teeth" Gravely
Erik Johnson Posted August 30, 2005 Posted August 30, 2005 For some reason I had nerve damage after I had them taken out, I never got any feeling back in my bottom lip for almost a full month. Good luck with it, at least the worst is over. Heh heh heh, unless you get dry sockets--oh boy!
SharkTums Posted August 30, 2005 Posted August 30, 2005 ^Or until you swallow so much blood that your stomach lining starts getting messed up and destroyed and you have to go on even more heavy duty medication to try and avoid the hospital! Oh, and you're throwing up blood for like 3 days! Sorry, had to share!
Chrissie Posted August 30, 2005 Posted August 30, 2005 Ewwww! Lol I know how ur feeling, Ive just had some teeth removed. SharkTums Posted August 30, 2005 Posted August 30, 2005 No, but that is a really good excuse I could use!
QuakerOaties Posted August 30, 2005 Author Posted August 30, 2005 Hey guys, thanks for all the nice words. I'm feeling a lot better. No pain, no swelling, and no blood. I was even able to eat a bowel (they were in a bowel since my mom made them VERY creamy) of mashed potatoes and a milkshake. I don't understand how people enjoy the feelings that painkillers produce. They just make me feel sick (yup, they're codeine) and groggy. And Elissa, all that talk about swallowing blood made me feel mmm mm good! Mark "Hopefully things will not get worse" Luskus
Sir Clinksalot Posted August 30, 2005 Posted August 30, 2005 Sounds like fun!!! I think I need to get my wisdom teeth checked.
benzo41190 Posted August 30, 2005 Posted August 30, 2005 when i got mine pulled, I had blood all over my pillow. Also, i lived off of rice and mashed potatoes.
