Lake Havasu Question

Has anyone ever been to Lake Havasu for vacation? My wife and I are going to be kid free for a few weeks in July. We are thinking about going over there for a long weekend during that time. We are looking at some basic accommodations, namely the Windsor Inn. We are also generally looking at being beach bums in warm water. We also want to get our drink on in walking distance. We also would not mind mini-golf and other such corny activities.

I was originally thinking about going to Puerto Penasco (Rocky Point) Mexico. However, my wife is scared to drive across the border with all the drug cartel crap going on.

Anyone have any positive or negative experiences here?

The best advice I can give you is this: There is really nothing there in Lake Havasu, other than the river, the bridge, and a few motels. It's not a bad place, but don't go expecting a lot of stuff to do there.

Not far to the north from there is Laughlin, which is a 'low-cost' version of Vegas, but without the 'charm' of Vegas. It's more of a local's town than anything else.

To the south, there is the Blue Water Casino/Hotel/Resort which has more resort things to do- but is in another small town with little to do outside of there.

Otherwise, it's pretty desolate therein. One good thing about Laughlin is this; Desperado isn't that far away from there (It's about the same distance to Vegas as it is to Desperado- should that ring a bell or two...

I was in Lake Havesu in September 2006, it's a pretty dead place, and the heat is amazing (so don't go outdoors). I checked at 6pm and it was 55 degrees celsius (around 140 fahrenheit?). I echo the sentiment - you can do better.

I like Mead the best out of all the lakes. Powell too, but that's a lot farther up the river. Mead is a half hour from Vegas, and is a very unique lake and fun to explore. I was there in October (best time of year IMO; not too hot, no crowds), and the water level is very low, as is has been since around 2003, so if you are boating be careful. Lots of beaches to spread out on as well.

Thanks everyone for the input, I think I may try it just for this weekend just for the hell of it. My wife keeps bugging me about that damn bridge there anyways. I am actually looking for relaxing and just want to sit at the beach. The heat does not bother me since I live in Phoenix and love the 100 plus days. I actually miss them all winter and 70 degrees is cold to me these days. I also like very warm water, my pool is already at 90 degrees and I will not be happy until it stays between 92 and 96.The Pacific Coast water is way to cold for me, until you get to Cabo.

I have been to Vegas once, it was OK and got old on me quickly. I do not gamble and do not like live shows. Once the the lights and such wore off, it was just an expensive bar in my experience. I got no comps on drinks since I did not gamble. Maybe some day I can talk the wife into doubling up on me and one of the local pro girls and Vegas will be real attractive then.

I wish I could find a place like Geneva on the Lake in Ohio from it hay days. That was a nice little place in the 80's and had a little of everything. I have come close with Presque Isle, but that and Geneva are long trips for me to do on a regular basis.

I'd highly recommend trying to get a hotel with a nice pool. Our place had a cool pool, the beach was relatively crowded, and the pool was pretty fun. Also I dont know if you can do this if your not a hotel guest, but there is(if I remember) some stuff to do at the blue dolphin such as mini golf, but theres not too much to do there in general. You'll probably have a good time for a weekend, but if you went for more time than that I do not like it. My dad took our family there for like 5 days and I hated it!!!!! But a day or 2 should be pretty fun.
