Apple Macbook vs Dell Notebook

Definitely go with the Dell. I have a Macbook Pro... and I hate it. It's so incredibly overpriced, it's insane. I HATE the operating system too, I just want more freedom and quite frankly, most software is made for PC, NOT Mac. To me, Mac are all about the looks, not about substance.

Save yourself some money and buy the dell. Easier to upgrade, more freedom of use, and far more fun. Ignore all those "Oh, but they go slow, and VIRUSES!!!". As long as you take care of your computer, you won't have any problems.

Don't get Vista, either. Go with Windows XP Pro.

(Nothing pisses me off more than Mac charging $60 bucks for a 4 year old game that sells for $10 on PC. Their prices are beyond absurd.)

Apple doesn't charge you $60 for a game that's $10 on a PC. The company that ported the game does. Apple has nothing to do with the game prices.

It sounds to me that you expected Mac OS X to be Windows. It's not. There's no way possible you can HATE one OS and love the other because they're extremely similar in so many ways.

I LOVE Mac OS X but I don't hate Windows. Windows is fine but I have a preference. You don't hate Mac OS X.

I'm not arguing that Mac is charging absurd price for applications, I'm just saying that applications made for Mac cost an absurd amount. It doesn't matter who is charging the price, the problem is that you have to pay it (if you want it).

I just care more about "bang for my buck" and customizability. PC is the way to go in that regard. The only reason I have a Macbook Pro is because I was forced to get one for my college. If I had the choice, I would have spend $1500 to build my own desktop PC. I would have control over everything, I would have a machine FAR more powerful than the Macbook Pro, and I would have access to cheaper software.

Software is a biggie for me. I use TONS of freeware for PC and it is hard to find the right freeware for Mac. I'm cheap, I don't like to pay for stuff. I download tons of media (games, movies, tv shows, applications, etc) and find it a lot easier to do what I want and find what I want on a PC.

I guess I just don't see the point in spending more for something that isn't superior to the other product. Mac are trendy, no doubt, but they just don't have the price-to-power that PC does.

Before this descends into an argument between Mac and Windows users, may I ask a question. Trying not to hijack this thread but would Mac users recommend the 13" or the 15" MacBook Pro. I'm just debating getting one soon for Uni, and also do you think the 9600 graphics in the 15" Pro is worth it?

Don't say they're not superior, they may not be in your opinion but that doesn't make ti factual. The PC is definitely the right product for you- you're a gamer. Macs aren't for gamers or people who want to mess inside of their computers.

PCs and Macs have similar but different target audiences. Doesn't necessarily make one superior.

@OP All well! Either way I say go with the 13" MacBook pro- if you must have games and you don't want to buy the Mac version you can always run Windows under boot camp. When you have a Mac you have all the amazing software for the Mac but you're also able to easily get the software for Windows, with Windows it only goes one way unless you use some hacky solution.

do you think the 9600 graphics in the 15" Pro is worth it?

The 9400m isn't that bad, good enough for all "normal" use. But, we don't know how much OpenCL (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenCL) is going to depend on what GPU you have.

Other GPU acceleration (Apple's Core Image, Quartz Extreme, and even Aero Glass in windows) aren't really "sped up" by having a faster GPU, as long as you have a supported card it's good enough. OpenCL should be faster on faster cards though, but again, nothing is really using it yet.

Also, it's $300 to go from 15in w/o 9600GTm to 15in w/9600GTm, yeah you get a slightly bigger HD/slightly faster GPU, but it's mostly for the video card.

I couldn't agree more. Any computer from Apple is a complete rip-off.

Seriously, all it takes is COMMON SENSE to not get a virus. I've had a PC since I was 7 (including the family PC) and HAVE YET to get a virus...
