Angry_Gumball Posted March 27, 2008 Posted March 27, 2008 Ok, so I have a 3rd Gen iPod laying around. It got sat on over a year ago and it's battery only held 4 hours max on it's charge. The sitting on the iPod resulted in a cracked LCD. I just got a replacement LCD and battery and popped open the iPod to hopefully revive it. All went well until I put it back together. After I snapped the case shut, I got a garbled screen. When it was open, it ran fine. The music still plays, but the screen is all completely scrambled after the case was reassembled. The iPod's warranty has been expired so I was willing to risk opening it up and performing the needed surgery on it. Would any other techie on here know what would cause the garbled up screen after closing the iPod up? (The screen looked excellent when everything was all opened up) So, any help would be appreciated.
darklingscribe Posted March 27, 2008 Posted March 27, 2008 I have no idea what might be wrong, I'm just curious as to where you got your screen replacement? I have a fist gen video iPod with a cracked screen (I ran over it with my car... Don't ask.), and I didn't even know you could buy a replacement LCD.
shawn_b_c Posted March 27, 2008 Posted March 27, 2008 While I havent specifically worked on an iPod, I have worked on a couple of other electronic devices that are similar. First, make sure all of the connections are good. The particular connections that iPod uses are a pain. They can easily look like they are connected properly, but they are not. Make sure that when you put it back together, you are not pinching any of the cables. Finally, make sure you are putting it back together EXACTLY the way it was dissasembled. I know this seems like a no-brainer, but (i'm not sure about iPod) many electronics have molded cases that cradle the parts a specific way, or even parts that fit together a little like a puzzle. If one of the parts is just even a little off, it could be putting pressure on a chip or even the screen. That could be causing your problem. For those of you who are looking for iPod parts - pdaparts.com, or ipodparts.com.

sfotfreak Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 I don't think there is anything you can do its bust! Find a cheap 2nd hand one on ebay to replace
trustkill22 Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 I think Shawn up there^ has the right idea. It sounds like loose connection and or pressure being put on something.

Carnage Posted April 10, 2008 Posted April 10, 2008 OK so I got a iPod shuffle for christmas 2 years ago and now it wont recognise it on the computer I have tried to reinstall it but it still wont work! Any suggestions Did the battery run out on it? Try resetting it. (hold the menu and center button for about 10 seconds) If the battery fully discharges, windows won't detect it. I've had it happen once. Hope that helps.
rollerboy Posted April 10, 2008 Posted April 10, 2008 Menu button? I can only see the Play/Pause, Volume up, Volume down, Skip track forward and Skip track back. RollerBoy.
darklingscribe Posted April 10, 2008 Posted April 10, 2008 Look in your manual. It will tell you what to press to do a hard reset. Just make sure the shuffle is plugged in and receiving power when you reset it.
Wes Posted April 10, 2008 Posted April 10, 2008 Gee, if only the manufacturer's of the iPod Shuffle had some sort of online help or support....
rollerboy Posted April 10, 2008 Posted April 10, 2008 Lol I had tried that website before but couldn't find anything Thanks Wes!
Carnage Posted April 10, 2008 Posted April 10, 2008 Menu button? I can only see the Play/Pause, Volume up, Volume down, Skip track forward and Skip track back. RollerBoy. Sorry, I missed that you had a shuffle. I was assuming you had a standard sized iPod.
Guest Posted April 12, 2008 Posted April 12, 2008 Do the LED lights come on when you connect it to the dock? If they don't, maybe it's a USB problem.
rollerboy Posted April 12, 2008 Posted April 12, 2008 No they don't I have tried the back usb ports to, no luck
Angry_Gumball Posted April 13, 2008 Author Posted April 13, 2008 Surprised that this topic came back. I almost forgot to post that everything's working on it, and gave it test runs while my other one's charging...and will soon be taken in to get a repair done on the headphone jack as it's still under warranty for 2 more years. I think the problem was that the hard drive ribbon cable wasn't seated in all the way so when I sandwiched everything back together, the drive was partially connected, leading to the jumbled up screen. The current problem now with my video iPod is that the jack only puts sound out of the left speaker/ear bud as the contact for the right's not making contact. I know it's not the earbuds or speakers as I've tried them in other devices/back-up iPod and worked great.
