This semester in University has definitely been very hectic! I just applied for an internship in South Africa/USA and was accepted! Through this program, I will be able to study in Dartmouth college in New Hampshire for one semester beginning in September. It is my first time in the East coast part of the States and I was wondering what are some worthy sites to see, theme parks, bar/club/nightlife... that's close by? Anyone from the East Coast? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

How far would you consider "close"?

There's alot of quality theme parks on the east coast. Some of them really close, some of them more like a few hours away. Depends I guess on if you will have a car while you're over here, or depend on public transit. Many of the parks in the area will be into weekend operation by then though.

Going longer distances won't be as easy or fun as it probably is in Europe. North America isn't known nearly as much for it's quality transit systems.

As far as more touristy spots, you also have some interesting major cities like New York and Washington,DC. But again, depends on how far you want to travel.

Regardless though, you shouldn't have a problem finding many interesting things to see/do. I'm sure you'll have a great time.

If you can make a long weekend, you have to go to NYC...there is no place like it!

Most of the sights are worth it, such as all the different art/history museums, the Empire State Building, the World Trade Memorial...just dont bother with the Statue of Liberty.

You can take an Amtrak (www.amtrak.com) Train from most major Cities to NYC or check out Washington DC. Since they are big cities, you really dont need a car...but can get by with buses and trains.

NH is a rural area...very pretty and its a great place to be if you like skiing. Or take a trip to Maine, if you like lobster, that is the place to be.

If you are going to visit Boston I would suggest if you like tours to take the Freedom Trail Tour. Also if you are in the North End go to Pizzeria Regina which is like the best pizza in New England. You have to look for it though its kind of hidden. Also if you are in New Hampshire Canobie Lake is located in Salem, NH which is just North of Boston. Also SFNE is about 90 minutes from Boston, or at least thats what the site says. Just exploring around Boston is really fun to do on a nice day.

Thanks so far for all the suggestions! Greatly appreciated! Boston and New York are definitely cities I would love to see. I've seen so many films about the two places and it will be amazing to see it in real life. Quick question... I know Six Flags Great Adventure is in New Jersey and that is pretty far from Dartmouth College, but is it worth the visit? I would love to try Kingda Ka!

^ By far worth the visit if you can make it there. You just have to find a way to get there. If you can get there in September, the park is pretty empty, so you could really have a great time there and be able to reride a lot of things, and El Toro is no slouch either.

If I were you, I would get tickets to see the Red Sox play at Fenway Park.

The legal drinking age over here is 21, so clubbing may be out of the question. There are still some clubs that are 18+, but you won't be able to drink. But hey, you'll be attending college, so I'm sure it won't be too tough to find an opportunity to drink. Oh yeah, and the chicks will probably dig the foriegn exchange student thing you got working for ya.

Yes! El Toro and Kingda Ka are the only coasters I really want to experience! Colossus at Heide-Park was great but El Toro looks really a lot better! How far is the drive by car from New Hampshire to New Jersey? I looked on a map and it couldn't be more than 5 hours right?

Oh no! How terrible! I totally forgot about this rule. No offense, but I think this is a very stupid law. I read that teenagers are allowed to purchase guns and fight in the war when they are 18, but not allowed to drink? How does this make any sense! No matter, I will be 21 in September anyways. Oh, is that old enough to rent a car as I will want to drive around the States...?

^^ Believe me, we are not offended at all. A lot of people think it is a stupid law.

It is about 5 hours, probably closer to 6. I would think that you would probably go I-91 to I-95 to the Jersey Turnpike, but that is just going off of memory.

^ I believe that you can rent a car under the age of 25, but the rates are slightly higher for people 21-24. I would just make friends with someone at the school and hitch a ride. Make it a weekend trip with some buddies.

In a word: Yes. Visit Great Adventure even if it means you can visit no other parks.
