FitchCoaster Posted January 6, 2008 Posted January 6, 2008 I love that we're finally getting rain, but it's taking away from my good-night's sleep. I couldn't sleep at all last night because of the stupid rain and wind pounding on my window. Maybe I'm just way too light of a sleeper, but it got annoying.
Angry_Gumball Posted January 6, 2008 Posted January 6, 2008 I'm the opposite...pounding rain and crazy storm helps me go to sleep...I guess the sound is relaxing. Even some light rolls of thunder can put me to sleep.
Sunfire Posted January 6, 2008 Posted January 6, 2008 ^Same here. I'm immune to loud noises. My house is right near the train tracks, so I don't really worry about waking up.
FLIPDUDE Posted January 6, 2008 Posted January 6, 2008 Whoa! This must be one heck of a storm! Hope everyone's alright! and isn't Reno in the desert?!
dandaman Posted January 6, 2008 Posted January 6, 2008 ^Somewhat close to the mountains, but I believe so. Right near the Cali-Nevada border. http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&time=&date=&ttype=&q=reno+NV&ie=UTF8&ll=38.376115,-118.388672&spn=12.462008,20.566406&t=p&z=6&om=1 There was an incident with mass flooding in some Nevada town yesterday, too, I believe...
scooterdoug Posted January 6, 2008 Posted January 6, 2008 ^^Reno is literally right on the boarder of desert and mountains. We are not like Vegas. We are situated at 4500 feet above sea level, right at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. I am literally within an hour drive of a half-dozen Lake Tahoe ski resorts. We are certainly not strangers to snow, which, by the way, we now have plenty of. It certainly is a winter wonderland here. All I can say is thank goodness for 4-wheel drive. -Doug
RonFrost Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 The last year I lived in Reno, 1996, we got about 4 feet of snow in just a couple days. It stayed on the ground almost all winter due to the lack of snow removal equipment. That really is quite rare, but it sure does make for a beautiful picture with all the surrounding mountains blanketed in white.
RonFrost Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 Here is San Francisco, we still have lots of tree branches littering the streets. I was having coffee in my apartment Friday morning, when I hear a loud cracking noise. I looked outside to see that a tree had been blown over just up the street. It fell on the back end of a parked car. The wind was terrible, and walking to work I was nearly blown over a couple of times myself.
Angry_Gumball Posted January 10, 2008 Posted January 10, 2008 Yesterday was crazy up at CSUEB yesterday, and being situated up on the hill...I was inside eating lunch as I watched all the students outside running from 1 class to the next with umbrellas in hand thinking it's going to help them keep dry. Just about every umbrella user had them flip inside out on them...pretty funny. The rain was pouring and with the wind, it looked like there were waves traveling across the univerity's walkways. Luckily, it stopped when I went out as I had 2 18x24 inch drawing pads on hand. And our sidewalks are still covered in branches and leaves...can't even skate through without having something catch my wheels. Really annoying if you ask me...
RonFrost Posted January 10, 2008 Posted January 10, 2008 Yep, that's funny - the umbrella thing. I work in a high-rise that has notoriously high winds swirling about it, even in calm weather. These storms really kick them up to gale force. I often wonder if it wouldn't be more effective to just start with your umbrella inverted, because it's going that way anyway.
