Teen struck by lightning; doing 'OK'

SANDUSKY - A 17-year-old Michigan teen celebrating his high school

graduation at Cedar Point Wednesday is "OK and talking" after being

struck by lightning, according to his 19-year-old brother.

Camren Vontersch was leaving the park around 5 p.m. because of

Wednesday's sudden afternoon rainstorm when he was struck in the

parking lot, said Sean Vontersch, who was at the park with his brother.

"He looked up and said, 'Give me a big one,'" and he got struck by

lightning," Sean Vontersch said, laughing, when he recalled what his

brother told him about the accident.

Camren was treated and released from Firelands Regional Medical Center

on Wednesday night.

Sean said Wednesday he and two other friends on the trip, all from

Williamston, Mich., near Lansing, didn't know Camren had been hit by

lightning and was at Firelands until a hospital employee called him on

his cell phone.

Sean said the group was leaving the park and reached the car before

Camren, who was walking slowly. When Camren didn't arrive, Sean looked

for him in the parking lot.

However, Camren had already been struck by lightning and had blacked

out and fallen face first in the parking lot, suffering a gash to his

chin, his brother said.

Sean doesn't know who called the ambulance, but said his brother told

him other guests were around when he was struck. Camren gave his

brother's cell phone number to the hospital worker.

Cedar Point spokesman Robin Innes confirmed the incident happened

around 5 p.m. in the parking lot and the Cedar Point ambulance took the

teen to Firelands. Innes doesn't know who called the ambulance.

Innes said the park wasn't closed because of the storm, although the

rides were down as they are during all storms. Innes said Cedar Point

guests have been struck by lightning before, but it is "extremely

rare."

Sean said the group arrived at Cedar Point on Wednesday and had been on

several rides before the storm. He said his brother had never been

struck by lightning, and this was his first time in a hospital.

I've heard of sweet irony, but this takes the biscuit!

Back down to earth (no pun intended), that's a real tough break. Think of all the tall objects around Cedar Point as well. Course in a parking lot, people are the tallest things there.

Glad to hear he's doing ok.

Robb and Dan emailed this to me the other day...it's really quite funny, but has made Robb regress back into being terrified of lightning. (He had almost gotten over it while we were in Florida!)

one of my biggest fears is lightning.. I like stay indoors during storms.. and I wont use the phone, or be on the computer, or around anything electric .. ..

Im surprised the lightning struck him instead of Dragster... because I always thought lighting hits the tallest object in an open feild, and Dragster is not that far from the parking lot.

Dragster is not that far from the parking lot.

Depends on which parking lot... the "main" parking lot is quite a way from Dragster, IMO.

When we were up there about 3 years ago, one hell of a storm came through just as we were leaving the TGIFridays at the Breakers. By them time we got back to Breakers Express where we were staying, it was quite a light show. With all that water, etc, it is wicked place during a storm.

In the summer of 03 the crazy peeps at IOA were actually running Hulk and Dr. Doom's Fearfall during a thunder storm it was quite a sight to see lightning flash then see hulk launch like it was designed to do that or something lol, that lasted for like 5-10 mins(there were actually people on some of the trains) Lightning is one of my biggest fears after being outside when I was about 10 and the tree about 20 feet away got struck

During my life in Western Queensland, I had the joy of being in 3 different houses that were struck by lighting, all due to 40ft masts ontop of the houses. These were used for 2 way radio communication on the propertys and the highest points around when ontop of 2 story buildings. The worst part was having to fix the masts after the strikes....not fun.
