Smith Falls, Ontario will soon get a $30 million amusement park, and hopefully it does better than Wild West World.

Smiths Falls, Ont. - The Eastern Ontario town of Smiths Falls will soon be home to a massive $30-million water and amusement park.

The project, unveiled by town councillors at a special meeting Friday, is expected to create as many as 250 jobs and generate millions of dollars for the area which is bracing for the closure of its two major employers.

Developers from the Great North Parks Corporation expect construction to begin this fall on 75 acres of vacant municipal and private land in the town's east end.

A "significant portion" of the park should be completed by summer 2008.

Developer Todd J. Mattila-Hartman said the plan calls for three themed areas including a traditional amusement park with rides, games and food as well as a water park and a large special events area that could be used to host concerts or festivals.

The announcement is expected to bring some comfort to the region, which will lose 1,200 jobs when the Hershey chocolate factory and Rideau Regional Centre - a home for people with severe developmental disabilities - close their doors.

Maybe they could attract all the Hershey factory visitors... oh, wait.

I'm all for another amusement park in Canada, let alone Ontario, but c'mon... location MIGHT be a factor, folks. Hell, send a park down this way close to London, Paul and I would probably both appreciate it.

You're probably too young to remeber Bob-Lo Island. It used to get a lot of traffic.

I wonder if there is any provincial funds involved here. After all, Daulton is sending us to the polls this year.

I think this will be more along the lines of Wyandot Lake with a larger focus on the water park, but it could also be a large family entertainment center like All Star Adventures. Now $30 million is not a lot, but if used correctly, the owners might be able to create a nice small park.

Nope. Went there when I was not even 1. 'Course I don't know if anything was open.

There's still some remnants of the former amusement park near all the land development. Didn't have a camera when I went then (a few years ago), unfortunately.

EDIT: Must have barely gotten in. Apparently the park closed officially in September 1993.
